SC EP:1076 The Unknown In The Ozarks

Billy writes “I had an incident happen to me two years ago, in August 2022. This incident has affected my life in a serious way. I have stopped almost all of my outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, and hiking, which have been a big part of my life.

Since the incident, I have been off and on in a state of depression, and I have gained about 35 pounds. I really need to talk to someone who has experience with these types of events and will take it seriously, and maybe help me move on from it.

In summary, the incident involved being stalked on a daylight hike in the Ozark Mountains by something I could not see initially, which caused the entire forest to go silent and the air to seem to stop moving. The woods became so silent that I could hear myself breathing. I was videoing myself during this time and commenting about the lack of noise and that I could occasionally hear something off to my right following me, always just beyond my sight in the woods, maybe 30 meters. The woods are very thick in this area. At one point, I was taking a break and getting a drink when, looking back up the trail I came from, I saw a large black object on the side of the trail. My first thought was that it was a black bear. As I watched this thing about 300–400 meters away, it did not move. I ruled out the bear because it did not move and would have to have been sitting like a dog if it were a bear.

I took out my iPhone 13 Pro and started to film. I zoomed into the thing, and it was black to a degree that could only be from something burnt. It had a sort of rectangle body, the head and neck was like a deer, with horns similar to those of a cow. The whole object was as black as anything I have ever seen, with no details. This sounds strange, but it is on film. I assumed it was a burned stump but wondered how I could walk past such a strange object and not notice it.

On my return trip, I walked past where the object was but found nothing that even remotely looked like the object I filmed. However, the area just behind where the object was had been smashed flat, as if something large had walked or sat there recently; I filmed this as well. Near the end of the hike, I noticed a pile of animal scats in the middle of the trail. This was deer scat, but it was large for deer. I bent over to film it. I intended to show this to my brother, who has hunted this area a lot. While doing this, I heard a very large twig snap directly in front of me. I jerked my head up, still filming, looking into the woods. The woods were thinner here than on the rest of the trail. The twig snap was from a large twig; in order to break something that size it would take something large as well. I could see nothing in the direction of the twig snap.

I felt a huge urge to run at this moment; it took everything I could muster to not to. I told myself it was daylight; I couldn’t see anything, and if it were a mountain lion or something running, running could trigger an attack.

I walked to my truck and was very nervous that it would not start or something and I would be stuck out there. My truck never had any problems, so that wasn’t a normal feeling. I drove away and stopped for a few minutes down the road to think about what happened. I was pretty shook up.

I stopped going into the woods after this incident. I would usually be fishing on a river near by, not near any roads and trails several times a week. Sometimes coming out after dark alone. I stopped scouting for turkey and deer seasons because I did this alone. I did not do any hunting the following year, even with others. About a year after the incident, I started to think about why I was so bothered by this incident.

1. Whatever was following me could have been a predator of some type, I suppose. However, bears are not that stealthy, I have seen a few of them in the wild. There are no mountain lions in the area. Whatever it was, it made the forest go absolutely silent. I stopped walking when I noticed this, it was so silent that I snapped my fingers a couple of times to make sure I had not lost my hearing. The air stopped moving, like I was in a vacuum. I don’t know any animal that causes that.
2. The object I filmed. What was it, and why was it not there when I first walked by or on the return? I have zoomed and slowed the video I took of it, and it seems to have turned its head slightly at one point. I have not heard of anyone having an experience like that.
3. The twig snaps at the end of the hike. Why could I not see what caused it? Something large enough to break a large twig by stepping on it should have been easily visible, but I saw nothing.

I focused on the twig snap and my lack of seeing anything. I thought about how quiet it was previously following me along the trail, but it was so loud at that point. I realized it made a mistake at that point right then by stepping on the twig. Why would it do that right then? I then realized that at that moment I was bent over, head down. filming scat. I was completely vulnerable and unaware of my surroundings then. I concluded that whatever it was, it probably saw its opportunity and charged me. Like you see in videos from Africa when a gazelle bends down to drink the cheetah springs on them. This thought really bothered me.

What would have happened if the twig had not snapped? Would it have gotten to me? Why did it stop when I lifted my head up? I could not see anything, it could have continued for me. I was unarmed.”

Thanks Billy, and thanks Wes! I grew up in the Ozarks, and still have close family there. I’m always fascinated to hear accounts from that region. It can be a really mysterious place.

Hi guys, Thx Wes..I’m not sure what this guy saw but I’d be terrified to go for a solo hike again. What do y’all think he may of seen? FYI I truly believe he saw something spooky but what?

If it wanted you it would have got ya , The snap was a game. I had the woods go silent on me and felt the energy shift , My phone picked up a noise I could not hear , I have a 40 second video , lost the 30 minute one of the silence , To me it sounded like a barge on play back , I never got to listen to the 30 minute , I went Facebook live , I figured if I was going to die , People would know what happened

Jan A: I don’t remember the number of the encounter you speak of but I’m pretty sure the title was “Last man standing”. If that is not the one you are thinking of you should give it a listen anyway because it is a good one. Best wishes.

DNA of the scat may have been enlightening.

Lost my Dad last week. Today would have been his 86th birthday. Thank you Wes for some needed diversion.

    Loved the music last episode

Thank you, Billy, for contributing your experience. Condolences regarding the loss of your good friend. Times like these make us particularly vulnerable on an emotional level and are we become
therefore “available fro” both beneficent and
maleficent realities. Both European and African folk stories are full of examples such as your true experience in the Ozarks, American folk tales also speak to your true experience. There is true power in your storytelling, and hence the power of Sasquatch Chronicles and Wes’ Great gift as a healing listener..
This community is a safe place for True storytelling and psychological health is often reflected in our ability to be reflective and a conscious way, with the presence and assistance of the collective./Community.
The great existential philosopher Kirkegaard once said, “life is best Liv going forward, but can only be understood looking backward“
Love that “and often think of myself, sitting in a boat going forward, but looking backward simultaneously. That quote and the image of a person in a rowboat has often been great solace for me and times vulnerability and mystery. Hang in there, brother, This too shall pass.

In the 1st video at 37 seconds is something dark in the distance. When he starts filming after hearing the branch snap. I think he saw ana dogman with its ears sort of cocked. My dog will hold his ears out to the side sometimes. He’s a German shepherd and his ears can go out to sides especially if he’s starting to pin them back in an aggressive posture.

Any missing persons in those parts of the Ozarks?
I can tell a difference in less sound in the first video.
How do these things know to act like a tree stump to trick us? Creepy. I guess if a camo covered hunter can hide as brush, they can too.

After hearing the hundreds of reports detailing the level of intelligence, adaptability, and capabilities of the Sasquatch, have others also considered that the being is using the natural resources available to it to disguise itself or mitigate recognition when hunting or stalking other animals or beings? Is it a stretch after what we’ve heard from eyewitnesses to consider that in cases/reports such as these, the Sasquatch used the rack of a deer or other antlered animal to disguise itself?

  11. Dennis G

Hey Billy I agree with the first listeners comment . Sounds like it could have possibly been a sasquatch squatting down holding a deer over his shoulder . Just saying . Great show Wes as always take care Billy .

Wow! Thank you for sharing the videos! I still believed the story without them, but it’s cool to see. You can tell how quiet it got! SOOOO creepy! I’m glad nobody got hurt! I’m leaning towards it being something that people see once and they’re never heard from again. I bet having your phone out and filming saved you!!

I really enjoyed Bill‘s encounter. Just the way he’s described everything.. I live and breathe Bigfoot. It is such a comfort to listen to these encounters when I’m driving I’m a plumber it’s a good living, but it is pretty stressful and just to listen to the encounters really helps.

1st thing that comes to mind is the “Not Deer” people have been reporting for the last 20 years or so. I don’t know much about it but, it’s definitely being reported in that area. People say they see what they think is a deer and it gets a little closer and it’s not a deer at all. With the scar and the horns, that’s just what pops into my mind. I don’t have much more info than that but, you can definitely find it out there.

Could be as simple of the long distance object with a deer shaped head and antlers as an Elk that had its head sticking out from the woods a bit, they are in Arkansas now. However that forest going quite and being paced is likely a Bigfoot, that may have been on the hunt for that elk.

  16. Robert P

Generally, I’d lean toward this being either an escaped, or feral goat. However, if we are going to go down the more paranormal road, I’d lean toward this being more of a mimic or what we refer to commonly as “The Other”. The only reason I even lean toward this is due to issues like the pacing, the silence, the fear, and the object being there and then not. We encounter these kinds of things quite often in the forest when we are investigating or hunting. I live in the Ozarks and research/investigate in the area. Most folks don’t realize that this area is every bit as strange as the Appalachians.

I do need to correct one thing that your guest said, and that is that we do actually have Mountain Lions in the Ozarks. They won’t officially acknowledge them as being here, but they are generally all over trail cameras in the area. I myself, have tracked them through the snow.

Thanks for your time, and great show!

I wish the black object was clear to see.
When Billy mention he heard no sound,
he was recording sound, I could hear noise from
    the wilderness.
(Maybe he was talking about before before the video began?)
I believe Billy was being stocked by something.

Algonquian lore talks about Wendigo creatures that have been seen in the area of the Atlantic Coast – seems similar to Billy’s description. Sounds like Billy may be suffering from PTSD. I hope talking about it helps him. There are many entities within many dimensions that we do see periodically. Journaling may help.

Someone told me just last weekend about one he saw as a kid on Mackinac Island that was white with dear antlers. I’ve never heard that before and thought it was BS. Wow.

This comment is late because I re-listened to this episode after watching “A Flash of Beauty: Paranormal Bigfoot” on Amazon Prime (all about the “woo” of Bigfoot) because towards the end, one of the guys they interviewed on camera swears that he and his family had this weird looking deer always lingering around outside his house. His whole family saw it and they talked about how strange it was – wrong color, size & behavior. Then one night he looked out his window and saw a Bigfoot shape-shift into that exact deer right in front of his eyes. I’ve never heard an account like that before and I knew I had to come back and listen to this episode again, because it gave me chills! Maybe Billy turned and caught the Bigfoot mid-shape/shift? Anyhow, another guest on that show also mentions THIS podcast by name so it’s worth a watch!
