YEAR: 2014

SEASON: Winter

MONTH: December

DATE: 6

STATE: Illinois

COUNTY: Shelby County

NEAREST TOWN: Findlay, Illinois

NEAREST ROAD: Bruce and Findlay blacktop

OBSERVED: I’m a retired paranormal and cryptid researcher and I had a personal encounter this year while deer hunting in Shelby County Illinois which is considered south central Illinois. I will not disclose the exact location but I will say it happened in a very well known state park. I had two encounters in two days one after another. The first was a grey color and second one was a dark black color. The second encounter I got a series of pics that aren’t the best but show a dark figure walking away. I have the details all recorded and theories as to why in the area that I have seen these creatures. I am also a well known tracker and guide in the area and I know my wildlife very well. If u would like to know more please contact me. I’m submitting this thru my phone and kind of difficult. On a side note I’m not some young kid I’ll be 41 yrs old soon.

ALSO NOTICED: Found a few trees that were twisted and broke off. These breaks were taller than me and I’m 6’3.

OTHER WITNESSES: I alone on first encounter first day and my son and I on second day but he was on the ground. He didn’t see it as I was trying my best to stay calm and not alert him.

OTHER STORIES: Yes I have researched my area and others.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Very calm little to no wind. Overcast but not too cold that day. Happened in late afternoon.

ENVIRONMENT: Wooded with also thickets. Valleys and streams in the area. Hardwood mostly with plenty of deer and plants for food source.

Thanks to Craig for sharing his encounter.

In 1998 I took a sojourn in India, I lived there for a while in NW India’s Himalayan foothills, the closest airstrip would be Bhuntar. I did the usual stuff, hiking, playing hours of karrom and generally soaking up the sights. We took walks that lasted days through places like the uninhabited Sanj valley, met the strange people of Mallana (who haven’t bred outside their own village since Alexander the Great, or so the local opinion goes, indeed your not even allowed to touch them!) but it wasn’t far from a pretty busy little place called Kasol where I had my rude awakening. If you look on the map I suppose the closest place you will see is Manikuran. The country there is pretty dammed wild, you can hear boulders migrating down the river beds at night in the powerful course of the glacier melt waters! We were staying in a chai house about 2 miles from Kasol and after a trip into town for a hair cut and something to eat other than chick pea Dahl! I had to turn off the road to take care of nature. I knew I couldn’t get lost as the path ran parallel to the river so I veered iff for some privacy, it’s hard to come by in India!

I walked to the river, about 10 feet from the bank, and found a suitable enclave, the noise from the river cuts out all other noise. Without going into to much personal detail I had my back to the enclave looking out through the bushes towards the water, and had been there maybe five minutes. Something moved to my right and when I turned, which I did cautiously because there are black bears there and this thing was about 10 feet from me, I saw what can only be described yeti, standing also looking out towards the river, the sighting could have only lasted a couple if seconds, it was stood slightly higher than me on the same rocky enclave I was squat behind. Horrible to faced with that when your pants are round your ankles!!

It wasn’t that tall, maybe a little taller than me so say 6-7 ft but was extremely heavy in the shoulders, and had immense thighs, I could see a suggestion of stomach and chest as the fur was extremely thin around this area. I didn’t notice a smell or anything but then the air is constantly moving that close to such a fast river so I can’t say it didn’t smell, just that I couldn’t smell it. It’s shoulders were massively built, I remember the biggest impact it made were it’s thighs and shoulder. It’s arms were very thick and I think longer than ours would be in proportion to its body. It’s face wasn’t easy to discern because I was lower than it and I was squatting put I do remember the powerful jaw line and heavy brow that I could just about make out, it did have ears though, slightly obscured by the fur but small like a child’s. I couldn’t make out the top of the head. It’s fur or hair was thick around the front part of the shoulder but shorter and thinner else where, and was brown where it was shorter and became slightly grey at the longer parts.

Anyway, it popped through the bushes and stared out across the river, it was slightly crouched with its right hand about shoulder height on a tree, I was down against the enclave and to it’s left. I froze. Don’t think I even blinked. It never did see me, which I cannot understand to this day but I guess the closeness of the river, with the noise and the misty spray you get must have dulled it’s senses. It turned to its right then moved very quickly across the back of the tree and was gone, I couldn’t hear it go because of the river. It’s the one and only time I never bothered wiping my arse, that’s for sure, I made my way quickly back to the path and headed for the chai place, I was dammed glad my room was in the first floor. I never did report it, Indian police wouldn’t have given a toss, and I didn’t tell fellow travelers at the chai shop, I didn’t know them well enough to blurt that out, I did feel a little guilty, as perhaps they should have been told for their own safety, but I chickened out, not proud of that. I’ve never even told my wife of 11 years, she doesn’t believe in anything she can’t touch or see, so I don’t think I ever will. I’m absolutely positive of what I witnessed, I was damn close, this was not someone hoaxing me, people struggle to exist out their financially, no one would possess a million dollar special effects suit solely to scare me shitless. When I look back I wish I’d seen it’s face, but then I guess it would have seen me and I don’t know what its reaction may have been, animals don’t react well when you surprise them.

These are pictures of the general area, and not of the actual sighting location.

new-theory-hobbit-out-of-africa

A controversial new theory published in the journal Nature suggests that the remains of Homo floresiensis, nicknamed the Hobbit for its small stature, do not belong to the Homo lineage at all, but rather are descended from a more ancient pre-human group called Australopithecus. It was always assumed that Homo sapiens were the only hominid species to have left Africa. But what if other species also made the journey and left their mark on the world and perhaps even our DNA?

The ‘Hobbit Human’ was first discovered in October 2004, when an excavation of fragmentary skeletal remains from the island of Flores in Indonesia yielded what was called ‘the most important find in human evolution for 100 years.’ Its discoverers dubbed the find Homo floresiensis, a name suggesting a previously unknown species, dated to have lived between 95,000 and 17,000 years ago – that means the Hobbit lived at the same time has modern humans and appears to be the latest surviving human species, aside from our own. It is estimated to have had a height of around 3 feet 6 inches.

Cave where the remains of Homo floresiensis were discovered in 2004, Lian Bua, Flores, Indonesia.

Ever since its discovery exactly one decade ago, Homo floresiensis has been the subject of much debate and intense research to determine whether they represent a species distinct from modern humans, or whether the remains belong to a modern human (Homo sapien) with a disorder such as microcephalia, a condition characterized by a small head, short stature and some mental retardation.

Modern human and Homo floresiensis

Modern human and Homo floresiensis (‘Hobbit’).

Discovery News reports that the prevailing theory is that “the Hobbit was a member of our family tree, belonging to the genus Homo and having descended from a population of Homo erectus that made its way to the island and shrunk in stature over evolutionary time due to the “island effect.” (Because islands are relatively closed communities, evolution tends to lead to smaller forms.)”

But now a new perspective has been thrown into the mix. This human-like species might not have been human after all. Renowned paleoanthropologist Chris Stringer from the Natural History Museum in London, suggests that the Hobbit species did not belong to the Homo lineage but was descended from Australopithecus, a genus of hominids that evolved in eastern Africa around 4 million years ago, spread out across the continent, and eventually became extinct around 2 million years ago.

Stringer explained that the jaw and chin of the Hobbit skull resemble pre-human fossils of more than 2 million years ago, while the body shape and small cranial capacity look more primitive that those in the Homo genus.

Skull belonging to Homo floresiensis

Skull belonging to Homo floresiensis, which Chris Stringer believes is more similar to the Australopithecus genus.

“This presents a real mind blower,” writes Discovery News. “We’ve tended to assume that only Homo sapiens left Africa, interbred with locals in Europe and Asia (like Neanderthals and Denisovans), resulting in today’s non-Africans. But what if other species, like Australopithecus, also left Africa, made it to places like Indonesia, and successfully settled there until more recent times? The plot thickens.”

If this is the cases, the Hobbit species may have also interbred with other hominids, causing further complexity to an already confusing family tree. Research last year revealed that the genome of one of our ancient ancestors, the Denisovans, contains a segment of DNA that seems to have come from an another species that was neither human nor Neanderthal. Could Homo floresiensis provide a missing piece to the puzzle?

“If the H. floresiensis lineage had a more primitive origin than the oldest known H. erectus fossils so far identified in Asia, then we would have to re-evaluate the dominant explanation for how humans arose and spread from Africa,” Chris Stringer wrote. “It would mean that a whole branch of the human evolutionary tree in Asia had been missing.”

Garry Montcliff had rented a cabin at Cross Timbers on Toronto Lake. Montcliff planned a week of relaxation, hiking, and working on his novel.

On the third night of his vacation, Montcliff was disturbed from his late dinner by sounds just outside the cabin window. Montcliff describes the sound like a class of fourth graders parading past the cabin. Still chewing a mouthful of his dinner, Montcliff inched toward the window hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever animal was outside.

Montcliff was startled to find when he peeled the window curtain back two huge red eyes peering in. Once Montcliff got his bearings, he recognized the gigantic ape features as a black fur Bigfoot. The creature’s breath fogged the window. The two locked eyes before the Bigfoot snorted and stood fully upright. The stunned Montcliff watched as the monster padded off into the darkness.

To scared to leave the cabin the rest of the night, Montcliff did not sleep. The next day, he crept outside to investigate the spot where the Bigfoot stood. He measured the footprints at 14.7 inches long and 10.9 inches wide.

As a geologist working mostly in the western U.S., I’ve observed various unexplained phenomena over the years. Some of the strangest things I’ve heard of, second hand, of course, are tales told to me by my paternal grandmother – Aunt Bessie, as everyone called her.

One such story she told me sometime around 1955 concerned a large hairy creature she and her family observed sometime just before the First World War. I believe this incident occurred in 1916, well before the first documented California sightings of “Bigfoot” back in 1958. She and her family lived in East Texas near Sulphur Bottom, which is now under a lake, but in those days was a swamp, not too far from the Boggy Creek area of Fouke, Arkansas.

There had apparently been stories told of large, hairy man-like creatures in the woods and swamps of that region for many years. As she related this particular story, she, along with her mother and father and some combination of her many brothers and sisters, were returning home late one night from town, riding in a wagon pulled by two mules. It was summer. A full moon was at its zenith, and they’d just turned into the lane at the gate that led to their house. My grandmother said the first thing they noticed was that the mules stopped at the gate and seemed oddly disturbed. I can’t recall all the details, as she told this tale to me so long ago, but they first thought a snake or something might be spooking the mules.

Then a noise drew their attention to the east across a field to the edge of the woods. This noise was a high-pitched, eerie wail or howl. She said the moonlight was so bright that you could see almost as if it were day. As they watched the darker line of trees, “something” emerged from these woods and stood in the open field bathed in the summer moonlight. It was at least as tall as a man, probably taller, she said, and covered with long dark hair!

She said it didn’t seem to slump, but stood straight and erect, all the time howling and shrieking and motioning at them. When it started across the field, her father fired a shot at it with his rifle. It stopped cold, turned and fled back into the woods. After getting to the house, they noticed that all the dogs were cowed and hiding under the porch, not barking. The whole family spent a nervous night, but nothing more approached the house, nor did they hear anymore of the unearthly howling.

Over the next several days, her father, brothers and many neighbors hunted through the woods for any sign of this thing – hair, blood, any indication that it might have been wounded. But nothing was ever found. This story is but one of many told over the many years about that area of East Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana where large “Bigfoot” or Sasquatch-type creatures are rumored to lurk.

I, being retired, live in those same gloomy woods, further west from where this incident occurred, but near a wild and extensive bottom land with its own history of sightings. Although these woods have their share of eerie sounds and peculiar tracks found near the old farmhouse, I have never observed anything of that nature myself.

I  had a weird thing happen to me, and a friend, while hunting down in Oregon where I grew up. We both heard a long howling sound as we were in the deep dark timber one night while coon hunting with our hounds near Fishhawk Lake, in Clatsop County. We were both on foot, and had walked up the ridge above the creek about a mile in, as we could hear the dogs work the track better up out of the creek bottom. We spent about an hour listening to our hounds work a cold track, then they just quit it cold. We did not hear them anymore at all – they just shut up.

Last we heard of them they were heading back down the creek towards the truck, then we heard off in the distance a sound like a wolf howling but much louder and more drawn out. We both heard it, and said to each other, “WTF was that”?

Neither of us had heard anything like it before, and we both had spent many nights alone as well as with other’s – hunting, walking, chasing, following our hounds through the woods in pursuit of big and small game. Then we heard it again, but closer. We knew it was not a wolf, or any animal we had ever heard.

This was back in 1993 in the Blodgett tract of the Oregon State Forest land near Fishhawk Lake Road and Jawbone Ridge Road. in clatsop county, near where the national guard soldiers on training exercises seen 3 bigfoot.

We both turned on our flashlights and started heading back down the ridge toward the road where my pick up was parked. We heard the howl again – closer than before, as it was getting closer to us. We began to hurry our pace. Soon we heard movement off to the side of us just out of site of our lights. Whenever we would stop moving whatever it was stopped too. As soon as we started to go again we would hear a branch break or a twig snap, and it was moving when we moved – stopping when we stopped.

I had a 12 gauge, and my friend had a 22 pistol. We knew if worse came to worse we could defend ourselves, but it never came that close. We made it to the road and our dogs were all ready in the dog box ready to go home – as were we.

We shut up the tail gate and left the area discussing what just took place and not believing it just happened.

Date: January , 1989
Lewis county, WA
Nearest town: Toledo
Nearest road: Green River
Conditions: clear and cool
Time: pre-dawn dark hours
Location: I was driving on the main logging road leading from Morton to camp 18 and the Toutle River Valley.

Description of event: Facts of the incident as nearly as I can recall… I have only mentioned this to close family members until now.

I was out hunting for fur with my hounds, for bobcat and coon. I was alone with my 3 hounds and had been driving the logging roads and creek bottoms checking the snow along the road for sign or tracks of any recent animal activity.

I had put the dogs up on the top of the dog box in the back of my truck where they could pick up the scent of any animal that had crossed the road, or was near the road. I was driving along slowly, (this is how you hunt with hounds for the most part – wait for them to catch the scent drifting up to them and they will open up and strike with a bark letting you know they smell game they have been trained to pursue). It was getting along about 2:30 am, and it was a cold night. Not much was moving, so I was gonna bag it and head home.

I was at the end of a long spur road and had turned around and was driving back up out of a fairly deep timbered canyon. I recall I had just topped out again, and was on a straight away, when all hell broke loose – my dogs went ballistic up on top of the box. At first I thought, “Alright! A hot track”. Whatever they had scented must have just crossed the road because I had just been through there about 15 minutes earlier and they did not let out a peep.

I had my head out the window looking for tracks in the snow along side my rig with my flashlight on, when I heard crunching sounds – I mean CRUNCHING sounds – loud enough to be heard above my dogs howls. At first I didn’t grasp what I was hearing, then it dawned on me… something very large was running up towards me on the logging road. My dogs were no longer barking like they wanted to chase anything. They were howling and wanting to get inside the dog box.

Let me tell you – these dogs had no fear. They would pull the hair out of a black bears ass, and make a bear climb a tree. They would tree the bear and not leave until I came along to harvest the bear, or leash them up and leave the bear for another hunt.

I heard the noises behind me gaining on me, as now I could hear gravel crunching or whatever. It was was running up on me and closing in fast. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I hit the gas pedal and hauled ass out of there. I drove like crazy as fast as I could go, and as far as the blacktop road, before I stopped to put my dogs back inside the dog box.

Whatever it was, it was big, and running on two legs. If not running, then walking with huge strides. It was about 50 ft behind my bumper when I floored it. I am sure it was hit with flying rocks from my tires spinning. I have no clue what it was, and have never gone back into that area alone to hunt at night.
