SC EP:969 Danger Close

John writes “My encounter happened in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, where Umass is, in October of my senior year of college (October 16th, 2021); I was twenty-one years old.

To slightly set the scene for you, I was home due to covid during the second half of my sophomore year and my entire Junior year of college. My senior year was the first year everyone returned to campus, with everything running as normal as possible. After a long week of midterms, I decided to take the Saturday to myself and hike in October Mountain State Forest in Lee, Massachusetts, to relax my mind.

I was on the trail for about an hour and a half and prepared to return to my car around four o’clock in the evening so I would be at my car y the time it was dark. On my way back down the trail, the sun was starting to set, so I wanted to try to find a better view of the sunset. I found a trail that was not as finished as the main trail, which went up a small hill, so I figured I climb it to see the sunset better. I went upwards on the trail for what was probably twenty-five minutes when I just came across it. There was what appeared to be an ape-man sitting down staring at me as I stared at it. It was about my size, 6’1”. It had black fur, and its skin was a grayish-black color. It was holding a branch in its left hand, and I believe it was eating the leaves off of it and saw me as it was in the middle of chewing. It had its head tilted upwards with pupils on me. Its mouth was half open, and it had a confused and scared look on its face. What scared me the most was the eyes.

There was so much human expression in the eyes alone that I was unsure what I was looking at. After about thirty seconds, it lowered its head and faced forward to its right side but kept its eyes on me. This side-eye it gave me made me feel sick to my stomach. I was looking at a human, but it wasn’t a human. The creature then moved its eyes off me, looked in the direction its face was facing, and then moved its eyes back on me, never moving its head. Thinking of the whites of its eyes is giving me goosebumps. This went on for about a minute when I heard a massive crunching of leaves come from out of nowhere in the direction the initial one was looking. The same creature came out from behind a tree, although this one was much bigger, closer to eight feet tall, and I just wanted to deflate on the spot. When it came out from behind its tree, its hand raised toward the smaller one with its hand up as if it was saying, “Stop.” The larger creature was female, as it had large breasts. The expression of the new monster was not aggressive. Her head was lowered with her eyes and her brows raised, looking directly at me. I started to shake my head to say no, and to be completely honest with you, Wes, I started to cry. I wanted to scream, but nothing would come out of my mouth; my face was paralyzed but silent. The creature watched me, and I don’t think there was any sympathy, but I think it knew I was not a threat. She lowered her hand and stood straight up, looking at me, and she looked behind me and, for lack of a better term, spoke. It was a weird gibberish thing.

I don’t even know how to describe it to you. She did not look back at me but at the smaller one, and then she slowly walked away. The smaller one looked at me weirdly; I don’t know if it was fear, confusion, disgust, or none of the above. It soon followed the female and kept looking back at me with the same expression. I didn’t know what to do because whatever I did when it was right in front of me kept it from attacking me. I felt like if I made one slight movement, it would come back and kill me.

I was also terrified to turn around to go back down the trail because I was almost sure she “spoke” to another one of these things behind me. I was so scared to turn around, I was fully prepared to see another one, but there was nothing there. I was terrified after what I saw and wanted to get out of the woods as soon as possible. As I went to take my first step back, I vomited, which made me feel like I could bring myself to move my body. I walked in fear along the trail back to my car, not seeing anyone else, to my dismay. When I finally reached the end of the trail and could see the opening of the parking lot, I felt so much better. I moved faster as I got closer and felt like I wanted to cry again when from behind me, I heard a guttural “Ay.”

I immediately turned around and saw another creature much bigger than the female I had seen earlier. It was standing behind a large rock which only allowed me to see the creature’s chest up and one of the creature’s feet planted on the ground. I could tell it was male; I don’t know if that is because the noise it made sounded like a man or because of intuition, but I am willing to bet this one was male. This interaction was far scarier even though less happened. It looked at me with absolutely zero expression except for its eyes and brows. Its brows were raised all the way, and its eyes were open so wide they looked like they were popping out. That is all it did. I believe it just wanted me to know it was there. Again I felt sick to my stomach and wanted to cry; however, I felt like if I had done what I had done earlier, I could be okay. I walked to the end of the trail at the opening of the parking lot and turned around to find the creature still standing there with the same expression on its face. I wanted to look away but was afraid to take my eyes off it. I made it to my car and drove back to Amherst with one hand clasped over my mouth and crying the whole way home; I was still terrified. My friends invited me out that night, but I refused; I stayed in my apartment and was awake all night. I had an awful feeling these things would somehow follow me home.

Sorry, that encounter is so long. I’m not sure how long other people’s encounters are on paper. I can’t get into enough detail about what I saw, but I’m also getting emotional as I go through it again. I’m nervous about coming on the show if you feel like you would even want me. I’m embarrassed about how I reacted to these things, I always feel like I want to act like more of an adult than I am, but I guess when push comes to shove and I see something terrifying, I still cry like a kid. I’m also worried about how I might come off to people who listen, especially since I am relatively fresh out of college and am working to become a full-time classroom teacher. I don’t want to come off as crazy because I know how I must sound after seeing what I saw.

But that’s my encounter; life hasn’t been the same since. I’m glad I work with fourth-grade students. They remind me of how naive the world can be, and I find peace in that. I wish I never saw these things because I can’t stand my viewpoint on the world since that day. If you would ever like to call and talk off the air, I would appreciate that I have yet to share my encounter with many people, and I don’t even think the people I told 100% believe me. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read my email to you, and I hope to hear from you soon.”

I will also be welcoming Jane to the show. In 2013 Jane saw these strange lights in Palm Springs, CA. She said “there was something sinister about the lights or that was the feeling I got.”

I would suggest that anyone interested in Sasquatch watch Chimp Empire on Netflix. It offers some fascinating insights into primate behavior…
That action of the male looking forward and then giving the side eye, then repeating, may have been a good thing.
In the primate world prolonged direct eye contact is considered a challenge.

Sarah G, the play button is visible, you should see it just under the picture of Palm Springs.
Thanks Wes, and thanks to your guests tonight for sharing their stories. 🙂

Hi guys.. been a little while since I commented. had a small Vaca in Northern Maine..saw a moose and 2 BLK bears but no sasquatch..lol. Hope you guys are well. Thx Wes..we appreciate you. Have a good weekend… time to relax and listen to the show. Love New England shows.

John, I’m so glad you shared your encounter. You certainly were baptized by fire with regard to seeing three sasquatch at one time with no real awareness that they were there. That is extremely horrifying to me because you had to deal with so much emotion and then you still had to walk out. I do not doubt your experience and you came to the right place to share. Be well.

Jane, I’ve had two experiences with lights at night. One was orbs in our back yard and there was no sound on a very hot summer night. When they blinked out, nothing. The other experience was in Maine on a lake with my husband and two life-long friends. The soft glow of the round object was amazing to us. The object moved toward us in a lowering, slanted move and then stopped. It changed shape to a pinpoint light and shot up into the sky like a bullet. Again, no sound and the feeling I got was whatever intelligence that this thing had, they were not ‘interested’ in us. Pay attention to your feelings and thanks again for sharing.

I’m very happy to see this new episode. Just returned from my best friend’s funeral. Rest in Peace Cindy darling. Thank you Wes I really need this break. Listening to this encounter will help take my mind off of everything……just for a bit.

One of my favorite days of the week! Worked late today but it’s NEVER too late for Wes & his Sasquatch Chronicles, right?? Listening from Central California, the “Paddy” state, lol. Until Sunday, have s great weekend everyone 😎

  6. Jeremiah S

That was a fantastic episode Wes. I’m really glad John shared his encounter. Amazing to say the least. Jane, didn’t sound plain at all. Extremely intelligent in her responses and conversation.

Last year a friend of mine and I obsessed over a woman that went missing in those woods in Western MA. She was a school teacher from Manhattan. There was very little news about her disappearance. Mentioned and then gone. We had wanted to look for her, and then I listen to this episode. I live 45 min from this state Forest.

    • Daniel B

I’m about an hour away from that forest maybe a little more I live on the south shore and I don’t remember hearing about the missing woman . Do you remember her name ?

    • Tom B

I see your point. I live in Alaska. There is definitely the belief amongst most of the indigenous people here that they take people sometimes, i.e. Portlock, AK.
I think it probable. If their personalities are half as diverse as humans, there must be some bad ones in the mix…
      However,
However if I were a human predator, a lone female in a heavily wooded and remote area would be a prime target, especially if I knew my target regularly hiked there.
Also, there are almost certainly other players, unbeknownst to the general public, in the missing persons phenomenon.
It’s the unknown ones that scare me the most….
Thanks for that post. Interesting stuff…

I still have Blankets over my windows ( and I just found that to be funny , after hearing it here tonight. ) Ep 801 last encounter ( but the guy before me is a major Puzzle Piece for me )
    ( OH NO – not 1 & done )

John’s experience is fascinating. And scary! I’m glad it ended on a good note.

Jane’s experience is crazy. So a bit of background to the Palm Springs area…. The aerial tram is a big tram that can fit like 20 people in it. Think of a big gondola at a large ski resort. I’m sure the lights she saw were not the tram. Also the top of the mountain there is a decent restaurant and hiking and you can walk in and camp. There was a ton of snow this year. This area is about 30 miles northeast of Palomar Mountain where another listener on here had a sighting. He was on about 6 months ago. Palm Springs is also close to Joshua Tree. If ya listen to The Confessionals, Joshua Tree has been brought up a lot lately and it’s close to the Borrego Triangle too. I’m finding out so much about the So Cal mountains from all these shows. Who knew?!

    Thx Wes!!

    • Chad W

My dad and I rode the tram from Palm Springs up Mt San Jacinto several years ago. It was utterly fascinating, going from basically a moonscape at the bottom, to impressive pine forests at the terminus, several thousand feet higher in elevation. Stunningly beautiful all the way.

I’ve heard every episode, I know what is what and I’m not buying this. Just my personal opinion and hopefully I’m wrong. Too polished and smooth talking

  11. Ramon S

the second guest sounded very scripted almost like propaganda. I feel there’s definitely an alien deception that’s being pushed on people nowadays. just being weary. the first guest was awesome. love the bigfoot stuff just feel you should stick with bigfoot and dogman and not get into UFOs and such after all this is Sasquatch Chronicles not Coast to Coast.

  12. Patrice W

WOW! The location of John’s experience hits to close to home for me! I live one hour away from where he had his encounter in the Bershire’s. And I live in the town where he attended the University ( also my alma mater). My husband and many of my friends love to hike and backpack in the exact area where John had his encounter. That whole area must be thousands of hilly/mountainous and heavily wooded acres. Its very close to the state line of upper state NY. Two very famous and popular hiking trails go right through that area, The Appalachian trail, and Mount Monadnock. I wonder how many more people have had close encounters with these beings out on those trails. My husband has had some of his most beloved backpacking experiences in that area. I’m glad to hear John is safe and sound after his very scary close encounter. John, I hope sharing your experience with us was cathartic and will help you as you process your experience overall. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. ❤️🙏🙏❤️

Janes’ report about the light and her fathers’ statement about it suggests what the late Malachi Martin classified as demonic obsession, which throughout history has followed family lines. It is evil and it is dangerous.

  14. April B

really enjoyed this episode! what a terrifying experience for the college student! I don’t blame him for not wanting to see another one! I can’t imagine having to hike out another hour after that experience and then to see the male at the end of the trail 😳

  15. megan p

i LIVE right next to October MT!!
I have heard a baby crying in the middle of nowhere and if you google bigfoot/Berkshires you will find a few good articles about bigfoot sightings ON October MT..UFO’s too and strange lights. It has a very long rich history of high strangeness including being Melville’s favorite view..he thought it looked like the back of a whale

  16. Laurie T

Here’s a wild theory. has anyone else thought this? was mom and dad Sasquatch allowing Junior to have that encounter with John for a lesson? Doesn’t seem like that was all chance encounter on the adults part.
Am I crazy? what do you think?

    • Tom B

I see your point. The young are usually the most protected group amongst mammals. Yet there are several accounts where they are left in the open, while the adults stay hidden, but within eyesight.
Seems like they could have found a play space not close to a hiking trail.
In the wild, young ones learn from watching the adults.
Could have been training for the juvenile.
Also, the juvenile was still as big as John, so maybe the equivalent of an 8 year old?.
That’s when we start teaching our young the more advanced things….
      Interesting….

  17. Michael H

The most outrageous conspiracy theory of all, the one that is the most preposterous and foolish to believe, is that we don’t live on a planet but under a great dome, as described in Genesis. But once I got the courage to actually look into the “flat earth,” I discovered it isn’t a theory, but a fact. And given this truth, then aliens are something completely different to what the mass psychology wants us to believe.

  18. Paul S

I know exactly where the trail is that he’s talking about because I’ve set traps off that same trail in the past. There definitely there.

John, thank you so much for sharing your experience. Your account is in my top 10 favorites for sure. Your eloquent honesty is very appreciated. The element of sentient creatures other than humans is always baffling and to witness it is never easy. Sorry I’m having trouble expressing my gratitude for your share. It means a lot.

In the primate world prolonged direct eye contact is considered a challenge.
The message may have been, “I’m here. I want you to see me. I’m not challenging you, but I have to keep an eye on you because the Mrs. and Junior are here. It is my job to protect them.”
The fact that John has a story to tell, suggests that they meant him no harm.
It would have been a simple matter to grab him…

    Wes: Or anybody who knows:
What became of the young one who fell in the hole that the farmer had dug? I must have missed that episode. I don’t imagine the farmer helped him out. I’m curious how he got out.

  22. Robert P

John, thanks for sharing your story. In addition to your career as an educator you should consider a side-show-bob in radio, voice-acting, or anything else that involves one’s voice. Your speaking voice certainly has the timbre, tone, and qualities that lead to a marketable profession. Aside from that, I have a question or two I would like to query if you’re open to interaction? Understandable if not! But if so, DM at through twitter @NonHumanaLura

  23. Gary F

Have to say I absolutely love this show, obviously being a subscriber, but had some trouble believing the first guest. if Bigfoot were this undisturbed about being seen, much more people would see them this openly. These are extremely intelligent creatures, who know how to remain hidden from the dangers of humanity. No disrespect to the first guest, just simply having trouble believing his story. which is really over the top.

  24. Gary F

Wait, so Jane saw the same light in a pool that her dad did while he was driving in the desert? is that supposed to be a coincidence or is this thing stalking them both? Seems pretty odd that the father knew what she saw before she even said anything . Count me as pretty skeptical on this claim.

  25. Cheyenne G

The story that Wes references at 33:10 was the first episode I ever listened to, when I stumbled upon it by accident. Blew my mind! I’ve always believed in the Sasquatch nation but never sat and considered how many people had encounters. I listen to this podcast endlessly! So many memorable encounters! The Kryder interview is one of my favorites!

  26. Brian D

I think it’s great that Wes throws more of his theories in to the interviews. His opinions are obviously based on years of research, interviews, and personal experience. It would seem to me that he has taken the “Doc’s” advice to heart. I’m remembering an interview with Dr. Bindernagle when he told Wes that eye witness testimony was a legitimate and credible source of knowledge that should not be ignored.

  27. Kari L

Great encounter, John, very descriptive, fascinated by close-up encounters with facial descriptions….would love John to have artist draw what he saw!! I think more witnesses should do that and send to Wes. Thanks Wes!
