The Confessionals writes “In episode 702: Surviving A Doomsday Cult, Jon, from The 21CD Podcast, and his brother AJ revisit a haunting chapter of their past; a childhood on remote land under the influence of a mystifying figure who seemed determined to shape their family’s beliefs. Isolated from the outside world, they found themselves woven into strange rituals and kept under strict rules that made their lives feel increasingly unreal. Now, they reveal what it was like to grow up in a hidden cult and share stories that have never been told before. The experience changed them, but their search for answers didn’t end there.

Years later, a journey to Iceland brought them face-to-face with something that was so shocking, they couldn’t believe it. During a late-night hike through an ancient landscape, shadowy figures moved on the cliffs above them, blending folklore with bone-chilling reality. In this episode, they share their tales of life on the edge of two worlds, the real and the supernatural.”

A listener writes “I have been somewhat reluctant to talk about what I believe to be two possible back to back bigfoot encounters on opposite ends of the country within about two months of one another. I have always been a fan of bigfoot, and grew up on the classic TV shows, but I always assumed it was simply part of mythology. After graduating from college with a focus in Anthropology, I was convinced Sasquatch wasn’t real. My mind was recently blown when I was on vacation in the redwoods with my wife in June.

We stayed at an Air Bnb just outside Mckinleyville, CA. I am a huge fly fisherman and I brought my rod along to see if I could land a few trout on our trip. There was a pull off on the roadside just down the hill from where we were staying with a trail that led to the river. I saw an older man pulled over there one of the days and asked if I was allowed to use that trail to get to the river or if it was private property. He said it was public so my wife and I walked down there to check it out.

I fished for about an hour and the sun started to set and we didn’t want to be trapped out there in the dark without a flashlight so we packed up and headed back down the trail to the car. The trail was significantly longer than either of us had thought because it wound along the side of the river for a while. We were chatting about what we wanted to do for dinner and were glad to have had such a nice day on vacation.

Just as we were about to take the final corner that would take us up a small incline to our rental car, I heard this ungodly yell and it made my blood run cold. It was the loudest noise that I have ever heard in the woods. It was like a death metal singer yelling right in my face at full volume but louder than that. I don’t know how else to describe it. My wife and I have both Thru-hiked the Appalachian trail and I shoot wildlife documentaries all over the country and I can tell you for a fact that it was NOT a bear because bears don’t sound like death metal singers yelling in your face. It wasn’t like an elk, or any sound I’ve ever heard from North American wildlife.

We calmly walked back to the car acting as if it were a bear and remaining calm and walking slowly. We got in and headed back to the air bnb. I stayed up until about 2 am listening to every sound I could think of on youtube that It could possibly have been but I couldn’t find anything that sounded like it. Within the following days the sound lingered in my mind, but as I got back from vacation the memory faded and I wrote it off as “probably a homeless person hiding in the woods.” All of my “bigfoot friends” said it was DEFINITELY a bigfoot, but any time I’ve been in the woods with them they said that EVERYTHING was a bigfoot so I didn’t take what they told me with any heed.

Two months later I was visiting my friend who owns a fly fishing and custom fly rod building shop on Lake Toledo Bend in Texas. He flew me out from Ohio to take some photos and videos for his website and to do some fishing. My friend Chester Moore picked me up from the airport and we drove out to my friend’s house. We got in late and had to be up early to leave on the boat to get sunrise photos so we exchanged greetings and went to bed.

We were standing on the boat ramp at 5 am waiting for the captain to get everything ready. His property is surrounded fully on all sides by the Sabine National Forest. Chester and I were standing at the boat, and the captain ran inside the house to grab something he forgot. As we stood on the shoreline, the most classic sounding WHOOOOOOOOP rang out from deep in the woods. I looked at Chester and said “You’ve got to be f****** kidding me” and 5 seconds later we heard a response, a short whoop from a completely different direction in the woods.

The captain came back out all cheer and ready for the day and we went out and got the work done we needed to do. My head was spinning all day but neither Chester nor I wanted to bring it up with our friend in the boat. When we got back on land, Chester pulled out his phone and played the whoop sound from Legend Meets Science (I think). It was the exact same sound.

Hearing something once is easy to write off. Hearing something 2x in a short window has left me confused and questioning everything I believe.

I’ve listened to Sasquatch Chronicles for many years because I enjoy the stories but they’ve taken on a whole different perspective for me now.

I am also the creator of the Wildman of the Woods Documentaries which you have been sharing and I appreciate that very much. I started making them for my dad because he said “They don’t make any bigfoot movies anymore like they used to” and I just kept making them for fun.

I wanted to share my encounters with you since I have been listening to everyone on your show for years and it has really helped me to come to terms with the reality shattering moments over the last few months.”

A listener writes “I have property in the Allegheny National Forest and over the past 10 – 12 years I have had three interesting situations take place, none of which I would have thought could be connected to one another until I stumbled upon your podcast.

Around 10-12 years ago prior to having a cabin built I was going to my property to clear trees, determine where the cabin was to go, leveling a spot on the hillside and in general taking the steps necessary to prepare for building a cabin. I would go up on Friday after work and spend the weekend in my tent. On one particular day (July I believe) I had worked into the night, it was probably around 10pm when I quit working and began to relax, I started a fire and made dinner. A few hours later, midnight, maybe 1am as I sat by the fire enjoying the peacefulness of the woods I heard a tremendously loud WHOOOP coming from the ridgeline to my east.

My camp sits on the east side of the Tionesta creek between two ridge lines that parallel the Creek. The creek sits at 1300′ elevation, the ridgelines paralleling it are at about 1800′ elevation and my camp around 1400′ elevation.

The Whooop I heard sounded as it it came from on top the ridgeline on my side of the river (400′ up), and was probably no more than 50 yards to the south (downstream) of my position, it was loud, REALLY LOUD, had it been a threatening yell at that volume I probably would have packed up and left!

The strangest part of the Whoop was the end of it. This is probably at the height of the Finding Bigfoot show that was on television at the time, I enjoyed the show and had heard Bobo and the cast do many hollers and whoops, but this one had a different ending to it that I find extremely difficult to try to reproduce. It was a WHOOOP that ended with a backwards (inhaling) POPing kinda sound. It was like a “WHOOOOP-WWHHOP” It was so loud! it sounded kinda like a fish gulping at air at the water’s surface, very, very loudly.

II have told many people the story since then, but the part that I remember most vividly is how that whoop ended, the sound was like nothing I have ever heard before or can reproduce.

Since then the cabin has been built, there is a deck detached from the cabin nearly 80’ below the cabin that sits about 20′ above flat ground that extends 100’ to the creek that is nearly 100’ wide then the ground rises very steeply up to the ridgeline opposite the cabin. The flat spot is cleared of trees leaving the lower deck about the only place I can get a cell reception, so the lower deck is where I go to communicate with my wife when she is not with me.

It was just a year ago, last summer I had been sitting on the lower deck roughly around 9 or 10 pm and had finished texting with my wife and was just stargazing. I had noticed that there was a routine pattern of commercial airplanes traveling from the west and heading pretty much due east. These planes would come into view high above ridgeline to the west, then disappear overhead as they became obscured by the trees and ridgeline behind me to the east. I watched these planes appear at fairly regular intervals for probably an hour (it was a very clear starry night). Then slightly to my left (south west) coming from immediately above the tree line across the river a glowing white ball of light appeared. It was not projecting light, but appeared to be illuminated internally. From my perspective it appeared to be just above the tree line and about the size of a cantaloupe. The light moved smoothly in a straight line, no flashing or blinking, just a steady glow slowly gliding across the clearing between the ridgelines over the river in a slight southeast line until it disappeared above the trees behind me heading in the exact direction that would lead directly to where the location of the WHOOOOP-WWHHOP had taken place around 10 years prior. As it had passed overhead and became obscured by the canopy I remember feeling strangely unsettled and nervous. I made my way uphill following and trying to catch a glimpse of it between the sparse openings in the canopy of trees, but I did not see it again. I returned to the cabin still feeling really weird, almost nauseous. That feeling stuck with me for a few hours that night.

So, August 3rd, 2024, just a couple months ago I was again on the deck below my cabin and had finished communicating with my wife, sitting there relaxing and enjoying the sounds of nighttime it was 9:42 pm I text my wife again and told her something along the lines of “I’m using this as a timestamp incase the aliens wipe my mind” her reply was along the lines of “go to bed LOL”…

This is what happened that evening:

We had quite a bit of rain for days prior to my arrival at the cabin. With the high humidity and hot days, at nighttime the area was completely masked by a heavy fog rising into the air off of the river and damp surroundings. Generally, I could see the creek 100′ away either by the moonlight or my headlamp, but that night it was just a white wall of fog limiting my vision to less than 20′. .

So, the sky was cloudy/foggy, there was not a single star to be seen anywhere. Then out of nowhere, slightly to my left between the two ridgelines a pale orangish glowing orb appeared, it was much higher than the top of the ridgelines, but nowhere near high enough to have been a star peeking in from between clouds. It remained motionless and just sat there glowing internally, not illuminating externally, just a steady dull orangish glowing light.

Coincidentally I just came across “Out there: Crimes of the Paranormal Season 1 Episode 2”, and at 8 minutes and 11 seconds in there is an almost identical sighting recorded, it’s more of a diamond shape than the circle I had seen, but it’s the same color.

Anyway, I had my phone with me, the thought of taking a picture never entered my mind, rather I used a star tracker app to try to figure out what star it could possibly be that I was looking at (knowing damn well it was nowhere near high enough to be a star). I messed with the app, going back and forth looking at this light, looking at the app, to the sky, to the app, to the sky, app, sky, app, sky… for about 20 minutes until I finally gave up and set the phone down, I looked at the orb and said aloud “ok, I see you, you have my attention, now show me” and before I could finish my sentence (“something else”) about 200 yards downstream (my left) the sound of multiple coyotes erupted making all kinds of crazy yips and barks. They continued making these sounds and sounded as if they were moving in a direct line, in the middle of the river upstream against the current. That would not have been possible for them to do, they did not sound like they were in the brush on the opposite side of the river or on my side of the river, they sounded like they were in the middle of the river. They continued yipping and barking as they moved upstream covering about 100 yards in a matter of just a few seconds.

At that time I then said (in my mind, not out loud!) “ok, wow, coincidence, how about” and again before I could think “another one” the coyote sounds abruptly stopped and turned into the sound a pig snorting. it was not squealing in terror as if chased by coyotes, it was simply snorting like a pig in a pen at a county fair. It picked up right where the coyote sounds stopped and it continued to move upstream at the same rate of speed as the coyote sounds, snorting calmly the entire way for another 100 yards in just a few seconds till it was practically directly in front of me. At this point I again said (in my head) “ok, wow, how about…” and before I could complete my sentence again “one more”, the snorting abruptly stopped and it transformed into a crow’s caw that continued to travel upstream at the same rate of speed, cawing the entire time for another 200 yards before it stopped.

I was amazed, astonished, overwhelmed and completely flooded with emotion like I had not felt anything like since my son’s birth. I was in complete elation..

I turned my head back toward the orb and said out loud “Thank You”, but the orb was gone! Nowhere to be seen.

I know coyotes exist in that area, pigs? it’s possible, I understand wild hogs are probably everywhere, but I have never heard of any in the area, and crows are not nocturnal as far as I know… and neither the coyotes, or the a pig could possibly be moving upstream in the river at the depth and rate of flow it was currently at. Had it been a pack of coyotes after a pig and a crow, I imagine it would have sounded much differently!

This orb had been sitting motionlessly, directly along the line of travel from the orb I had seen a year prior moving between the ridges, both of which are in line with the location of the strange Whoopwwhhop sound I had heard 10 years earlier.

Correlation? I have no clue, but the last encounter certainly has had me thinking about it almost every single day since. In my opinion, I am certain the animal sounds I had heard were not coming from actual coyotes, pig or crow. it was a performance provided by the orb, intended for me. I don’t know why I was so fortunate, but the interruption and completion of my sentences with audible projections was far too weird of a situation for me to believe otherwise.

So, that evening, when the orb was gone I was left feeling completely overwhelmed with emotion, that is when (9:42pm) I sent my wife the text “I’m using this as a timestamp incase the aliens wipe my mind” so that if by chance I were abducted and awoke with no relocation of the evening’s event that she might remind me of it!”

A listener writes “Hi, Wes, I just wanted to tell you my brother Chris in Eskridge caught some funky nearly electronic sounding growls on the audio recorder of his security camera this week.

Also, this former non-believer brother caught a glimpse of what he thinks was dogman (quick black flash). He thinks he can get it with his compound bow and shot into the branches of a tree at something black and never found his arrow.

Also, I spoke with a 19 yr old, Aiden, who lives in Eskridge, and he said he knows of a handful of high school students who saw a coyote stand up and run away on two legs. I asked him if they said anything about it’s height and he measured about 5 ft from the ground with his outstretched arm. I think it was last yr or the yr before.

Eskridge is about eight or nine miles from Lake Wabaunsee where I had the scream, tree break and stick structure (placed in front of my car while camping at that lake ((like a gift or a warning not sure))”

Tonight I will be speaking to Matt and John. John writes “My wife and I went for a trail run in Scottsburg, IN in the summer of 2005 and came upon a clearing where we saw a large creature that stopped us in our tracks. It was approximately 50 yards away when we came upon it but we immediately felt unsafe and froze in our tracks as we stared at it. We left the area pretty quickly.

Matt writes “Hello, I caught your podcast the other day and at the end you advised that people who have experienced encounters could contact you. I have spoke to very few people about what I experienced but would like to get the stories out there.

A little background about me. I am a Systems Analyst. I am from southern California both my experiences happened at a remote lake in the San Rafael Wilderness about an hour North of Santa Barbara.

The first encounter involves what I believe to be a bipedal Bigfoot type animal and the second encounter has to do with something very large in the small but deep lake I lived and worked at.”

Wildman of the Woods writes “Prepare to be captivated by one of the most intense Bigfoot encounters ever documented in Ohio. In this gripping documentary, we follow Tina Sams, an experienced outdoor enthusiast and member of Project Zoobook, as she recounts her shocking run-ins with the elusive creature known as Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, in the dense, mysterious forests of Eastern Ohio. One dark night, Tina and her companions witnessed something that defied logic — a towering figure, far larger than any human, emerging from the woods. This sighting shook her to her core, leaving her with more questions than answers. Could this have been a real-life encounter with the legendary Wildman of the Woods? Or was it something else entirely?

In this chilling retelling, we explore Tina’s initial Bigfoot encounter and the fear it ignited in her. The documentary takes you into the heart of Bigfoot country in Ohio, where the forests hold countless mysteries waiting to be uncovered. As Tina describes the unnerving experience of seeing something that, to most, isn’t supposed to exist, we dive deep into the lore of Bigfoot sightings in the Midwest. Ohio is known for being a hotbed of Sasquatch activity, with numerous sightings reported over the years in places like Salt Fork State Park and the Appalachian foothills. Through Tina’s experience, viewers will gain insight into what it’s like to come face-to-face with North America’s most elusive cryptid, sparking intrigue for believers and skeptics alike.

Tina’s encounters didn’t stop with that one chilling night. In the months that followed, she joined forces with Project Zoobook, a renowned research organization in the Bigfoot community, to dig deeper into the mystery. Project Zoobook connects researchers and scientists to investigate Sasquatch sightings and potential evidence, bringing credibility to the search for Bigfoot. As Tina shares more of her stories, you’ll learn about other terrifying encounters and hear reports from outdoorsmen and women who, like Tina, have seen things in the woods that they can’t explain. Could Bigfoot really be hiding in Ohio’s forests, avoiding detection while leaving behind just enough clues to keep the legend alive?”

I apologize for the late post. They are working up the street and my power has been on and off all day. I have been trying to upload the show most of the day.

A listener writes “On December 31st 2020 my partner Marcel Arbour and I bought a property with a small cabin, in Bruce County Ontario. The property is located 1km from Greenock Swamp (the largest wetland complex in southern Ontario Canada).

The lay of the land is farm country with slivers of forest running through properties. A major river. Conservation and trails. Greenock Swamp and Lake Huron. Roughly 5km, towards Lake Huron, the wind turbine fields begin. They stand from 380ft-850ft high, with red flashing lights at the top. We were reconstructing the cabin, basically building off the 4 corners of the house. It was dilapidated.

During that time we lived 20 minutes away, in a small town (Port Elgin Ontario). On a cold rainy night in early November 2021 (possibly November 1st) at around 10/10:30pm; we gave up, left the cabin frustrated, cold, tired and hungry. Headed to the condo in town. It was a very rainy night, cold and damp on the verge of snowing. Big rain splats on the windshield. The sky was not black. More greyish due to the bright moon and clouds.

We could not get the cabin warm. My hands were so cold I could barely hold a hammer anymore. We left in separate vehicles. Marcel said he would follow me (which I didn’t love because I drive slower and felt that now I had to go faster with him behind me).

We got about 3-4 kms up the road. We were coming up on a farm house with a huge barn. It appeared someone was out working in the yard. I thought to myself, “what a crappy night for farmers to be out”. The barn spotlight and house lights were on. But there was also a red/amber light I couldn’t make out.

At first I thought the amber light was a distant wind turbine. But it moved like a torchlight being carried by hand. It was moving and swaying oddly. Then I thought it was the lights that Mennonites have on the backs of their wagons (legally have to have running lights here.) I thought that because of the way the light seemed to trot now.

But this amber light was at the barn now and was moving fast! It moved so fast I thought it was now a horse with a rider on its back. It was charging me! It came barreling up to the edge of the road and leered at me, opening its mouth full of teeth and screamed!

My brain could not comprehend what I was seeing! My mind wanted it to be a horse! I tried seeing the horse. It didn’t make sense. It was not a horse.

I could only see the left side of its body. The creature was standing straight up on its hind legs! About 6 feet tall. It was over the windshield of my VW Tiguan. Thick shoulders. Built like a muscle man.

It’s leg from the side angle appeared very muscular like a football players. I did not see below the knee. It donned a lion-like mane around it’s shoulders, neck, head and breast. Woolly looking when wet. Breast that almost pointed out like a wiener dogs (we have a wiener dog). Wiener dogs breast plate/rib cage literally come to a point.

The creature had hackles standing on end. It’s hackles were so prevalent that I thought they were feathers at first. This made the monster seem bigger I think. It’s shoulder was that of a buff body builder. I could see muscle definition where the mane ended.

Pure muscle!

The monsters neck and shoulders were like that of a hunchback. And part of what makes this thing so bloody scary looking. It’s head was lower than it’s shoulders. It’s head dipping down to its chest. Once the eyes adjust, it hits you! What this thing is! A pure abomination. This thing should not be! Very strange, unorthodox looking. Something crazy. It leered through the windshield. At first I thought it had horns. It’s ears were so small and disproportionate to it’s massive head and muzzle. They look ridiculous thinking back now.

It’s eyes no longer appeared to be illuminated from within when my high beams shone on them making them yellow and very apparent.

It’s mouth was agape, showing me razor teeth! The creature’s muzzle looks like a King German shepherds…. if you morphed that breed to be 6x its regular large breed size. It’s mouth is wider and weirder than a dogs with a long snout. It appeared to have more control of the muscles in his face than say a floppy loose skinned hound dog.It screamed when I drove past. A Million questions run through your mind.

I screamed to myself in the car, braked and swerved. I feel like I might have clipped it, that’s how close it got. As soon as I was past it I stepped on the gas and flew out.

I thought about stopping the car to talk to Marcel, but I kept going too afraid.
This road is straight and 15km long.

Once we got home I unpacked my stuff and carried on. We were home for about 10 minutes and Marcel said “I saw a monster “.

That’s when I remembered. I had already forgotten what I had seen. Blocked it out.

Marcel did not see what I had. Until the point where the creature went behind my car. Marcel saw it pushing off from my bumper going between his truck. He saw it run on 4 legs into the pine forest on the other side of the road. Weird things happen out here occasionally. Every now and then we hear what sounds like something beating the hell out of a pack of coyotes. Screaming. Lion roaring??? Marcel and I are hunters. Marcel more than myself. We know what the wild life looks like here. That monster did not appear to be anything I ever knew existed. We found your podcast. It helped a lot. I never knew about dogman. I had always wanted to see a Sasquatch or a UFO. Instead I was blessed with demonic dogman.

This encounter got me thinking of other things and time’s strange occurrences have happened. I don’t think we are alone and we have much to discover. We have spoken to a few friends and family. One about 20km in the other direction believes she’s hearing a “skin walker” killing coyotes as well.

It’s creepy near the swamp!”

A listener writes “I’ve had a few weird thing happen similar to what I’ve heard on your show. I recently moved into a new house in south central MO. Last week I was walking the dogs at about 2200, and I shined my flashlight up to the power line easement.

At about 150-175 meters, I saw a pair of eyes about six inches apart, orange in color. They did not blink, but looked around like it was looking at me and my two dogs. About three or four times it looked to its left (my right) into the tree line. After about a minute, minute and a half, I took them inside.

I was/am a hunter, and I have seen eye shine at night to include coyotes. Coyotes I have seen (in WY when I was stationed there) always had a yellowish color, and deer a lime greenish color. Anyway, have you ever heard of a bigfoot or other animal that has orange eyes? Thanks, I love your show.”

Spoke to the witness and he has agreed to come on the show. He said “To this day I do not know what it was.” He writes “This story comes back from 1978-79i was age 18or19. I grew up in a rural area of western KY mostly farm ground with hills, overgrown thickets and old oil field roads.

There was a wooded place that joined farm ground with a access road that led to a old oil pump jack site in a cul de sac type clearing, it was a place guys would take 4wds to try to get hung up or goof around drink beer or take girls riding at night to try scare them.one night some other guys and I drove back in this spot probably midnight or later messing around had parked trucks 3 I think and decided to walk up into the wooded area to explore which we had never done. We had lights and kind of paired up to form a sort of arrow figure point ,right flank, left flank.

I and my partner took left flank with the point pair maybe 25-30ft ahead right flank maybe 40 ft from us we could see their lights and at first going was pretty easy until we came to a section that seemed like a overgrown wall we worked thru the thick brush stopping at times to listen in the night as we had began to lose sight of the others lights but could hear them from time to time or catch a glimpse of their lights.

During one stop I can’t recall if I or my partner heard first what sounded like children playing on a school yard, we said to each other that can’t be out in this woods nothing around at 1 or 2 am. The noise seemed faint or distant but we heard them as it was a clear cool early oct.night.as we worked thru the brush some more we recognized a voice from the point shouting out CATCH OR GRAB THAT SON OF A BUCK or something close to it after which there was confusion we could others trying to run forward their lights bouncing in the night as my partner made our way forward we were sweeping the area with our light looking for movement and thinking it was one of our company pranking on us we gave chase as best we could for the growth at one point we hear a large splash soon followed by another we discovered there was a creek on this property we didn’t know was there .when my partner and I got to the creek one of the guys in point and one on right flank were climbing out we asked the point voice what he saw he said a black shape was laying down and stood up and ran.

He kept saying it’s a man, it’s a man, he was wearing a pack like a soldier he said it wasn’t particularly tall or no taller than us. We regrouped at the creek talked a bit each pair blaming the other for a prank and all denied any part we made our way back to the trucks and stood around the bed of one each going over what happened or what they saw my partner and I were the only ones to bring up the kids playing when at once we hear whomp whom whom on the side of one of the trucks behind us some including me quickly ran down to that truck but found or saw nothing still blaming each other for pranking we went back to the first truck where the others were and things began to settle back down then we hear the same beating sounding like it’s right at the truck we standing around and many of us could see the truck shake.it was enough to make everyone scramble for a truck and tear out of there as fast as we could.”

YouTuber Bob Gymlan writes “When I was the night manager at a resort, one of my duties was to patrol the spa a couple times a night. On one of the first days with my first smart phone, I decided to take photos.

The ensuing photos are shocking, frightening, and clear. For eight years, I’ve held onto some of the best paranormal evidence I’ve ever seen. Strangely enough, I still am not sure what to make of the ghost phenomena, but I doubt it’s simplistic, and I’m certain it’s unsettling.”

Researchers have confirmed details from the Sverris Saga using ancient DNA analysis of a body found at Sverresborg Castle. The study combined history, archaeology, and modern genetics, providing insights into the Well-man’s identity and ancestry while setting a new standard for future research on historical figures.

A passage in the Norse Sverris Saga, an 800-year-old account of King Sverre Sigurdsson, details a military raid that took place in AD 1197. During this attack, a body was thrown into a well at Sverresborg Castle, located near Trondheim in central Norway, likely in an effort to poison the main water supply for the local population.

A new study published in the Cell Press journal iScience on October 25 describes how researchers used ancient DNA to corroborate the events of the saga and discover details about the “Well-man,” blending history and archaeology with science and setting a precedent for future research on historical figures.

“This is the first time that a person described in these historical texts has actually been found,” says Professor Michael D. Martin of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s University Museum in Trondheim, Norway. “There are a lot of these medieval and ancient remains all around Europe, and they’re increasingly being studied using genomic methods.”

In 1938, bones were found in the well at Sverresborg Castle, but researchers at the time lacked the tools to do much aside from visual analysis. Now, radiocarbon dating and advanced gene-sequencing technology have allowed researchers to craft a more intricate picture of who the Well-man was. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the body is approximately 900 years old, and studies conducted in 2014 and 2016 confirmed that the body belonged to a male who was between 30 and 40 years old at the time of death.

Complexity Beyond Historical Texts

“The text is not absolutely correct—what we have seen is that the reality is much more complex than the text,” says archaeologist Anna Petersén of the Norwegian Institute of Cultural Heritage Research in Oslo, Norway.

“We can corroborate what actually happened in a more neutral way,” says Dr. Martin Rene Ellegaard of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. As part of his work toward a doctoral degree, Ellegaard used samples of a tooth obtained from the Well-man’s skeleton to sequence his genome. Using this information, the team was able to ascertain that he most likely had blue eyes and blond or light-brown hair, and his ancestors likely hailed from the southernmost Norwegian county of present-day Vest-Agder.

The researchers were able to draw conclusions about the Well-man’s ancestry thanks to a large amount of reference data from the genomes of modern-day Norwegians made available through a collaboration with Professor Agnar Helgason at deCODE Genetics in Iceland. “Most of the work that we do is reliant on having reference data,” says Ellegaard. “So the more ancient genomes that we sequence and the more modern individuals that we sequence, the better the analysis will be in the future.”

“Those reference data are literally thousands of genomes of modern Norwegians and many thousands of other European genomes,” says Martin.

However, this technology has its limitations, as sampling the Well-man’s genome required removing the outer surface from his tooth—to avoid contamination from those who had handled it in non-sterile environments, such as during excavation—and grinding the tooth into a powder. This means that the sample can no longer be used for further tests, and researchers were not able to get data on any pathogens the Well-man may have been carrying at his time of death.

“It was a compromise between removing surface contamination of the people who have touched the tooth and then removing some of the possible pathogens … there are lots of ethical considerations,” says Ellegaard. “We need to consider what kind of tests we’re doing now because it will limit what we can do in the future.”

The researchers say that they would like to test samples from other historical figures. “The important Norwegian Saint Olaf is thought to be buried somewhere in Trondheim Cathedral,” says Martin, “so I think that if eventually his remains are uncovered, there could be some effort to describe him physically and trace his ancestry using genetic sequencing.”

Speaking to this new technique of blending of history and science, Petersén concludes, “It’s a fantastic result on what Ellegaard and Martin’s method can bring to archaeology in such a strange or rare context like this is.”
