Strange Encounter On Mount Rainier

A listener writes “Hey Wes hope your having a good weekend! I wanted to tell you about a strange encounter on Mt Rainier, I have done a little research and have not been very successful in finding information on this so thought maybe you have heard something? This is not concerning the hairy guy…just want to get that out.

About 13 years ago two friends of mine set out to do a documentary on Mt Rainier and the surrounding areas. The 3 of us had been contracted out by a coop that represents many of the small towns around the base, we build them a video about their towns and of course to drive web traffic we tour the final destination of many…Paradise.

We had just finished up our shooting and an interview at the Paradise visitor center and we’re heading home, there was snow on the ground as we had just filmed some of the tube runs they had up there. By the time we had started down the mountain it was starting to get a little dusky and we wanted to get some cool river shots so as soon as we hit the river we pulled the FJ Cruiser over and headed down this goat path to the river…it was a little sketchy.

We were probably down there for about 15 mins when we noticed this group of people walking upriver toward us, no big deal. As they got closer I remember saying to my self WTF are people walking around up here in T-shirt’s and button up light flannels. We have down jackets…there is snow!

We were kinda set back on some rocks sitting watching these two men and a female who appear to be about our age say late 20’s or so walking up the river bank as they approach with in conversation distance we greet them and say hello …well they were not as friendly as us, they just turned their heads in a really creepy fashion and stared at us as they kept walking forward, not missing a beat! Wes I swear to you these people had these very chilling deep red eyes. I have goosebumps writing this now and have to say it was one of my most frightening experiences. Not their whites just the centers were red. There were no campsites, Parking lots or anything else up there! This was the last bend before it goes vertical. I do not remember the quality of their skin wether it was normal or pale or whatever, I did not get the feeling of fear like they wished us harm but maybe more like “don’t f&$k with us” type of vibe. Very strange to see 3 people walking up a frigid river bank in The darkness.

Anyway I hope you don’t mind me asking if you have details or not of what this could have been? I get the opportunity to see people tweaking at work which is why I kind of keep quiet about this experience and they were not tweakers.”

We have traversed Rainier and nearby areas, mainly back 15 or more years ago.. My dad grew up in logging camps and one was Mineral WA. So, he had us take him out there as a last hurrah. This was one of the WEIRDEST places I have ever been! Not one of the locals would speak to us, we asked about places Dad knew of ,people he knew and they absolutely would not act like they even saw us.
Not one word was said to us and we stopped at four places to ask folks stuff, not one! Dad got angry at last stop after asking a store clerk about an old place he lived , and got the blank stare, ignored and turned away treatment! Dad just exploded and called the guy an ignorant inbred $$#tard and flew out the door with us following quickly!
Leaving the town we noticed a young man and woman about 16 walking out f the town and they actually waved at us….we pulled over and Dad asked them his directions and they weren’t from there, said they were leaving to meet pals that dropped them off there. Said they got the weird treatment to, couldn’t get waited on at cafe, couldn’t find a restroom etc.
Anyone else find it like Zombie-ville in that area?

+I believe what you saw.. was like the Lady in White.. Like the 2 Brothers.. The reason is… You were doing a Doc on the Towns around and on the Mountain .. You drew their attention .. If you were not from around.. the area .. they were checking you out.. I could go into a long spill but I will not..

Went to Google Earth and visited Mineral, Wa. and it looks like it could be a creepy town. Everything looks so old. All the vehicles and houses looked old too. I sure wouldn’t want to be there, especially at night. Thanks for your story also Pam.
