SC EP:234 I thought I was going to die

A listener writes “I was hiking up this trail with a couple of friends. I had a hiking pack on my back and my friends had gotten ahead of me on the trail so I decided to take a break, drink some water and then catch up with my friends.

I heard some movement in the bushes below me and I did not really think much of it. I unsnapped my hiking pack from around my waist.I heard it rush towards me and as I started to turn to look at what I assumed was a bear…the next thing I know, I’m in the air and hitting a tree….I am now on my belly. I was confused and when I lifted my head up, all I saw was hairy legs and huge feet. This thing was standing over me and than it screamed/roared at me. I thought I was going to die. I tried to look up at it and it screamed/roared at me again.I noticed the creature was breathing heavy and rocking from side to side. I heard the bushes below me rustle and the creature was focused on the noise….that’s when I looked up and saw it’s face….I….I am not sure what these things are but it was strange” The witness also says “I never thought Sasquatch was real, I always put it in the same category as leprechauns and unicorns. A lot changed that day….”

OK…now that I am not having a heart attack about you retiring Wes. LOL! Others will never be able to be any better than the BEST which is you! Thank you Thank you Thank you

  2. Donna A

Wolf, am so glad you are OK. Hope you sharing your encounter with us helps you in dealing with it. Thank you for telling us your story so we can learn more about these things. God bless!

  3. Black-YETI

Note to self…when in,NC hiking carry locked and loaded condition one glock 45acp.
That is too wild wes. What was that thing after other than to kill and eat him? If his buds were not there that guy was a bf chicken wing for sure
What ever happened to that dr from nc that had one on thermal? I wonder if it was in the area of this assualt.
Im glad that was not me as I would have drawn my weapon and dumped like 10 rounds into that furry axx ape left over from some ice age.
Not until I started listening to your show wes did I ever hear they hurt or killed people.
Now im watchin my 6 for mote than bears and cats.

  4. Annette L

That is one of the scariest encounters I’ve ever heard. I’m glad his buddies were there because if Hey weren’t making noise calling for him who knows how it would have turned out. I would be interested to know if he experienced PTSD after an encounter like that. I mean not just for not going back in the woods for a year but reliving it or ha I g nightmares about it. I wonder if he has told or will tell his buddies now that he’s had time o come to grips with it. Great show Wes!

  5. Frankie P

Great way to finish a hot and tiring weekend. Thank you Wes. That was awesome – he was charged and hit by one. I’ve only heard about them charging and changing direction, leaving before. Poor guy…

  6. Robert D

Wes I was thinking that maybe the big foot acted that way is because wolf had the upper ground on this monster and it felt threatened and we all know they like the upper ground. This show made me think of the episode when the guy was taking a leak out of his broken down van and they met face to face. Thank you again

  7. SANDRA E

Boy Wes….I really got that sinking feeling with your big “announcement”…..and then the parting shot at the end of the show….lol. This encounter was an amazing story. He must have been terrified…..I think I would have passed out. Keep up the good work, Wes. Thank you for all that you do.

    • David R

You’re right Pete, but we have to listen anyway. I enjoyed it because I love every story I hear on here. This thing wanted to kill him, but he heard his friends coming up to find him. Then he got scared and left. I’ll bet his friends heard the scream from hell, and I’ll bet some saw it run away.

  8. Janetta V

Wes, you are the king of BLUFF, no wonder your good at games. I swallowed your retirement bluff and you really got me. So glad you are staying. The guest had an unbelievable story, one of the best. Thanks to both. j.v.

  9. Jill F

Hey, Wes! You said it: They’re ‘trying’ to copy you. Ain’t none of ’em succeeding! Great show, glad it had a happy (well, kinda!) ending. Had he tried to get up or not had buddies nearby it’d have been curtains for sure.

  10. michael n

Glad you’re ok!! That had to be one hell of a smack to hit a tree so hard that bark got stuck in your face!! Wow!! I’d say you are very lucky it didnt hit your head or neck. That reminds me of the time a guy shot one and it ran down into a creek bed and another one ran out of the bush and hit it in the neck and broke its neck then two others ran up to the one with the broken neck and they tore it to pieces then ate it. Maybe thats why indians called them canibals?

Wes, I’d watch you on espn poker championship take down those clowns in Vegas bro!! Go get ’em……lol. you already have the cool sunglasses for it. Im all in.

  11. Curtis G

Wes: you scared the s*** out of me–all the way in Tokyo! Glad that you are still with us. So many of us are addicted to you show….if you were gone….they would really have to call that the blues!

  12. June P

I was thinking, “retiring? Whaaaat? This show is awesome, why?!!!” Then I realized my membership had renewed 4 days earlier and was so bummed out. Great ‘poker face’ ( albeit voice ), Wes!!!!!???????????
    ???♦️♣️♥️♠️
I can’t imagine being thumped by Sasquatch. I would have been crumpled on the ground, half dead and when I saw it I would have had ‘the big one’ and died straight away…holy moly!!!
    Yet another great show!

  13. Julie N

Great show! Glad he lived to tell the tale! And, Wes…glad you’re only retiring from poker. Tho, somehow I don’t quite believe that.

It would be really great if your guest would work with an artist to get a detailed rendering of this thing’s feet since he got such a good look at them. Since you’re obviously a gambling man, Wes, I bet you a nickle you can’t make that happen!?

    • m99

Me too, but thought, this guy’s reliving the trauma in it’s entirety for the first time.

With that said, it illustrates what a very good interviewer Wes is. Anyone else and I’d have been gone after a few seconds.

*Not that the encounter wasn’t interesting, but the other interviewers I’ve heard don’t allow people to actually tell the encounters. The witness’es are interrupted constantly, talked over, and words are put in their mouths. Not here, thank goodness*

  14. m99

Great Show Wes! And I agree with Wolf. We had listened casually to several over the years. I remember saying “Finally” when we ran across your show online (Bigfoot Radio). My husband didn’t believe in anything like this but he is from the concrete jungle, with the exception of the military out back maneuvers. I just though they were some kind of demons or something like that. Anyway, Wes is the Bes…

  15. LoraLee A

Wes I do not know where you learned your interviewing skills but they are top notch! Wolf thank you for telling us what happened to you. I am so glad you came out of that OK!

  16. Klane C

Sorry guys, I’ve been listening to SC since the beginning. Maybe it’s the way he tells the story, but I feel it difficult to believe this one. A lot of pauses & thinking. Xo still love the show. Am I the only one noticing? Plus throwing in every stereotype in the book? Polygraph.

    • Robinson W

Couldn’t agree more… I know I’m the jerk skeptic. But, I think it’s OK to question these. Not calling anyone a liar. Just making sure we use our heads here.

He just had too many details…. particularly having the “big feet” tip him off to what it was….

Would love love love to see some pictures. Surely, he took a trip to the hospital, and has some lifelong scarring from it. He was throw, face-first, into a tree.

He really hit all the hallmarks, too–kinda like a Bigfoot Encounter Mad Lib.

Sorry, man .. but, no-go on this one. Still waiting for that perfect story; so, I continue to listen. Here’s hoping… Fingers crossed.

  17. Charles K

Folks, don’t post negative comments about how people talk. It’s just his way. Take from it the shear amazing encounter. This poor guy has held this in for 9 years and didn’t even tell the 2 chums he was with!!!! The poor guy is probably on a prescription of Marijuana just to deal with the PTSD. I thought he was very brave to come on the show and tell that nightmare. I’ve had bark imbedded in my face. You can’t get it all. It sucks. Chill out folks. Guests read these posts duh!!

  18. Reed D

    Wes,
Oh man you made my heart sink!! You definitely scored on the gotcha!
Really glad you’re not retiring my friend, we need you out there leading the way!

    Thanks Wes,

    Reed D.

  19. Reed D

    Wes,
I hope you will consider reposting The Insider with Chris. I would very much like to hear it (I missed it, never got to hear it). Id happily pay extra $$ to SC for the privilege!!

    Thanks,
    Reed D.

  20. Black-YETI

Yes everyone talks differently so the guy was OK.
Now think about this…your in the woods and some animal attacks you with that vicious of an attack. You have to think your gone to die. O if I’m gone to die I’m going down stabbing. Out comes my Ontario knife and mrs feet is missing one for sure.
I tell my friend when I’m camping in Idaho…dude if I scream out at night don’t come Near my tent cause I gone to stab anything attacking me.

  21. Danny T

Wolf, if you read this just ignore the haters.
In what area of western NC was this? Asheville, Black Mountain, and the border of Tennessee were mentioned, but which county was your encounter in?

  22. Ginger T

Stupid Wes ! Ugh ! I started to cry … That was not nice … You got me … Great show btw … I think maybe this thing just didn’t like people in its space, I think they don’t like men. Men are a threat, women & kids not so much. All the aggressive behaviors are mostly towards men.

  23. SantiamLady

Wes!!!!!!? You scared the CRAP out of me with that Retirement thing! I stopped breathing, staring slack-jawed, at my device! ? Then you said Poker! ♣️♥️♠️♦️My gosh! I came close to weeping with relief……and wishing I could slap you upside the head for scaring me so bad! ? Don’t do that to us!
Now to the Show…….? Wow! What an AMAZING, way too up close and personal, encounter. Encounter of the 3rd Kind…….CONTACT!!!!! ?? My thanks to the awesome Guest for sharing that near-death encounter! ????????????
Terrifying! And I agree…..I think the Guest had the misfortune of setting up his hammock in close proximity to a family group of females and babies. The males must have been off hunting, since apparently the Matriach of the group felt that it was her job to protect the young. From her swaying back and forth over him……I think she was contemplating killing him. He saved his own life by holding a submissive, non-threatening posture, but it was clearly still a very near thing! YIKES!
Wow Sir……every day you live now is a gift! You are so fortunate now to be dead, or paralyzed, or head injured, from the physical battering against that tree! ?
Soooooooo glad you survived & decided to share your wild encounter with all of us! Thank you!????

  24. Laura K

Thanks SO much for sharing this, Wolf!! I got chills man…can’t imagine what that was like but really grateful you lived through it. I’d be so interested in seeing your memories sketched. This happened pretty close to me-Banner Elk, NC and I think that added to my chills. Thanks again and as always, thanks, Wes, for doing what you do!! Except the slight heart attack at the beginning…NOT cool. I get such a kick out of your Tombstone references…my family can’t communicate if we’re not quoting a movie? and Tombstone is at the top of our list!

  25. pam

Wolf, you gave a great account of what happened that day. I just can’t imagine the hopeless feeling you must have had when it’d scream at you!

  26. Dave H

That was a terrifying encounter story. From the moment I first heard Wolf speak I was quite captivated by his voice, he sounded very sincere and the hesitation and nerves indicated obviously he was someone who was telling a deeply repressed memory and still was not quite sure how to express it all in words that others might understand. He did well.

Many former guests have said they feel much better psychologically after having been on the show and having had Wes’s counselling. I wonder if Wolf might get to a point where he’ll feel comfortable enough to open up and tell his two mates what really happened that day, because surely they must still quietly wonder.

  27. Danial B

Just a thought to everyone who is commenting about Wolf’s pauses and use of “ya know”. Keep in mind that he is not a professional speaker, story teller or live performer. The number one fear in the U.S. is public speaking. People would rather burn to death or drown than speak publicly, so keep that in mind when listening to these interviews.
Wes does an excellent job of making it safe for them to speak, but in the back of their minds, they still know that hundreds or thousands of people will be listening.
On top of a traumatic experience that they are re-living for everyone, they are also battling through one of the most common fears that most people have.
So, to Wolf and everyone else that is telling their story, good job. To Wes for his work and commitment to make a safe place for people to tell their story, Thank you.

  28. Nicholas V

Well said unless you been living under a rock you have seen the patty film or heard of Bigfoot . That’s why when I hear these encounters where people say they didn’t know what they were looking at I’m thinking are you kidding?

  29. craig d

Haha I’m glad I am going through the back episodes and know I still got about 800 shows to catch up. I’ve got through 234 in just over three weeks, thats a lot of SC .
Anyhoo glad I know Wes is still about or he would have got me with that intro. Hehe.

  30. Dale P

It is a good thing your friends were there to save you. That beast would have killed you and you’d have become one more “wildness disappearance”
, as so many others have become.

  31. Blanche D

Very likeable guest. So happy his friends came to the rescue. Terrifying encounter. I hope he can eventually talk about his brush with death with his pals. Loved that description of sassy’s foot. 🐾
