SC EP:195 Two Hunters Encounter A Sasquatch

Tonight we welcome Kyle to the show, and he writes, “My brother and I are avid hunters and spend and have spent many years both big game and predator hunting. I live on Long Island in New York which is mainly a suburban area. Our hunting trips mainly take place in the catskill and Adirondack mountain ranges in Upstate NY. On the weekend of February 5th this year, we ventured into the area we would normally deer hunt in Wilomec NY with the anticipation of calling in some coyotes. This is all state Forrest land we hunt on. The tactic we employ to hunt coyote are late night hunts involving loud rabbit distress calls or coyote communication howls. So on Feb 5th at around 11-1130 pm, we walked into our blind location, got settled and started calling. We got some responses from some distant coyotes several miles away. We let out a few more calls to try to bring the dogs in closer. After the 2nd group of calls, surrounding woods became deathly quiet. Soon after that we heard what sounded like an owl very close to us. It made some vocals which To me and my brother didn’t seem right.

The owls “whoing” sounds too deep to be and owl but we both kinda shrugged it off. As the owl continued to vocalize, we started hearing faint response vocals from another owl that sounded like it was coming from across a flooded timber area about 200 yards away. At this point the hair on the back of my neck was starting to stand up because not only did the owl closest to us sound “off” but so did the responses coming from across the flooded timbers. (We refer to this spot as the beaver dam spot). Then out of no where it all just stopped. The woods fell silent again for about 5 -10 minutes. We both employ night vision scopes as well as laser designators for night hunting. We were trying to get eyes on the owl that was calling out but we couldn’t. As we scanned the surrounding trees, both owls started right back up but this time the two vocals seemed to be right next to each other.

The sounds got Intensely loud and almost sounded panicked, and that when we heard the sounds go from “owl” to a loud what I can only describe as an excited screaming monkey. Seconds later I heard extremely heavy foot falls that were clearly bi-pedal jet right past the back of our blind. Needless to say we were both equally confused as to what exactly was going on here. My brother turned to me and said “something isn’t right here” to which I staunchly agreed. We both agreed that maybe we should call it a night and come back in the morning to breakdown our blind and get the remainder of our gear. So cut to 9am the next morning. We are walking in to our spot to get our gear out. The hike in is mostly uphill. At the top of the trail it levels out and surrounding the trail is bamboo that someone had planted a long time ago. That section of trail is only about 100-150 yards away from where our gear was. My brother was walking in front of me when we reached this bamboo areas and this is where the trail levels off. He took one step into the trail at the bamboo thicket and we were greeted my a lowest most guttural growl either of us had ever heard.

He immediacy stumbled back 2 or 3 steps into me. I chambered a round in my gun and we stood still and quiet as to not disturb what we thought was a possible sleeping bear. We listened for a few minutes and finally I told my brother that we needed to just press on and collect our gear. So we did. We packed up our blind and our seats and headed back down the trail away from our hunting spot and now we are approaching the bamboo thicket again to make our exit. As we approached we heard a really loud “huff” and again we froze. We both had our heads on a swivel looking for this “bear”. That’s when at about 30 yards away I saw a huge dark creature standing upright pulling the bamboo aside to peek through. I brought it to the attention of my brother and we both stood there in amazement. We saw what looked a lot like a man.

I would say it was between 7.5-8.5 feet tall, black brown hair covering all of the body that was visible to us. The shoulders were as wide as the tailgate of my pickup truck, I mean just tremendous. We also noticed that there was a musky smell reminiscent of a buck during the rut. The forehead had little to no hair on it and the skin was a grayish color. We both saw this creature blink it’s eyes and for whatever reason, I feel like that’s the only thing I was able to focus on was its eyes the eyes were set deep in the skull and almost looked black. I mustered the courage to take a step forward and this thing took off like a dragster. Ive never heard any animal tear through the woods like this thing did. I’ve had trouble recounting all the details but I’m going to see my brother this weekend and we are going to compare notes as to what we both witnessed. You are the first person I am telling. I’m married , have 2 beautiful daughters. I feel like I can’t tell anyone due to criticism and risking my employment. Any info you guys could help me with would be awesome. It’s really hard for me express through email the whole encounter. I get too excited and feel like I cant type fast enough to keep up with my thoughts.”

Good show Wes, All things considered he seems to be handling the encounter pretty well, You can tell by the way he was speaking he was still trying to process the whole thing, after all, it’s only been a couple of weeks. Good luck aka (Kyle.)

It was such a fresh experience , he was srill trying to get the right words tp describe the experience. He will go through stages like in grieving, the bad dreams will be next, the obsession with trying to describe the depth of the experience soon fllows and never departs.

Great encounter! I thought he did great describing the encounter for just being a couple weeks ago. I wonder if he saw a lone male or was there another one lurking they didn’t see. Creepy stuff, I did enjoy.

  7. Mark K

Wow, incredible ! That’s right In my neck of the woods! I really want to prove their existance, struggling with thought of shooting one unless it charged me. That was a really great encounter! Glad your feeling better! My whole house has the flu now…..

    Wes and Kyle,

Totally credible believable encounter from one hunter to another. I’m not sure it was a bamboo thicket, but most likely it was Phragmites that could grow up there. It gets real tall and dense and resembles bamboo. Native americans made arrow shafts out of it. I’ll post a link of a photo of Phragmites.

Great encounter Wes! Thank you and the witness for another great show! Glad you are feeling better and take care of yourself. I drink lemon water every morning and it has boosted my immune system. Google it. Take care and keep up the good work. Love the show!

Just this week I heard the big owl sounding call ending with a cackling, crowish type sound. Is how I’ve always thought of their calls. I thought Kyle’s describtion of their calls is dead on. The last time I heard this call was only a few nights ago. I had gone to bed late and was playing a game on my IPAD. The “Big Guy” let of that sound and it scared me so bad that it was Jo’s close to my house up on the bank of the woods. My brother lives at the bottom of my hill. I was so unnerved at it being so close to the house that I called my brother, awakening him and his wife. His wife said she had heard something and their dogs on the porch had been growling, but she wasn’t fully awake and didn’t know exactly what she had heard. Talking to them help calm me down. After the “Big Guy” called out he was answered by another one further up into the hollow. I didn’t hear any more that night and was finally able to go to sleep. The dogs in our neighborhood bark a lot at night. My brother’s big dog will go back and forth from their house to mine. The interesting thing is that when these “owling” noises or pounding sound happen, the dogs become.very quite. I’ve noticed a pattern. I can sometimes tell when these creatures are approaching by the dogs behavior. There will be tremendous barking, as the creatures come around, when the dougs become very quiet, they are nearby, when the barking gets prolific again they have moved away. I can hear the direction of travel by the dogs reactions. I heard three knocks last night a little before 11:a.m. It wasn’t a tree knock, but I hear this often. Usually in repetions of three but I have heard a single knock before. I called my brother but he didn’t hear it. Three nights before that at a little after 10:p.m. We both heard these knocks. This winter I hear these knocks 2-3 times a week. If the dogs are barking and this knocking happens, the dogs get quite for awhile. Myself, my family that live hear as well as our neighbors know these creatures frequent our hollow. There is so much activity that it is too numerous to relate.

Great encounter. But just like you have done in the past, you, and your guest are greatly misinformed in regards to black bears maximum size. Please research it. Black bears in northern nj average over 500 pounds full grown. During the nj 5 day bear hunt each year many over 600 pounds are taken and several over 800 pounds. So your guest was wrong to think that in new york state, just over the border from nj, doesnt have black bears just as big. All this infirmation is easily attainable. Same as the fact that most people killed by bears each year in north america are killed by black bears. And in all cases, just like here in nj, the killings by black bears are predatory in nature with the bear relentlessly stalking, pursuing and eating the victim alive, usually without even killing them before they start eating them. As opposed to grizzly bear attacks where almost all cases involve protection of cubs or having startled the bear. These are bear facts you should be aware of. However, no, i do not think people are mistaking bears for bigfoots. Just wanted to get the facts out that black bears do indeed approach 1,000 pounds in nj area and do indeed sometimes pursue and eat people. Several a year in north america. They do not ALWAYS run away from humans.

    Credible witness in my book.
“Kyle” you describe the feeling of looking at this creatures face as akin to Shock, but not frozen and having the presence of mind not to run. I have heard other witness accounts, here and elsewhere , describing it as the conflicting thoughts racing through your mind, as you stand looking at something that isn’t supposed exist.
One thing you have going for you now, is this account on tape. If it were me, the few people I would confide in, I would have them listen to this recording first.
The best to you and your brother.

Some great descriptions by Kyle. I would hope he would go back and go to where the forest giant stood in the bamboo and get pics of where it ran off and what the brush looks like on the trail it took out of there.
I too have heard the owl, except it was not quite an owl and louder than an owl would be. Just before the owl there was a loud scream, human type scream but to loud for a human from the distance it was. The owl was immediately followed by an early morning loon call, again too loud and not a spot on loon. All these were About 200 to 300 yards away close to houses on a small lake and none of the three calls were next to the other but separated by 50 to 100 yards. Now from the north at least a mile away, in the forest, maybe more came the Ohio Howl or like what Bobo Faye does. About 10 seconds. The all went quiet and no more sounds. I think the Alpha Male was calling the food gathers back for the night – my best guess anyway. Very special experience that night. It was on Round Lake, Iosco County, Michigan. Late June 2011.

Like Jonathan B said, “Ain’t no fun when the rabbit has the gun”. Please be careful Kyle when you and your brother goes back there. Thanks Wes for another great encounter. Glad you are better.

  15. LoraLee A

Thank you for telling us your experience Kyle. Now your information quest begins. Remember you are not alone. Perhaps you can locate a local group of researchers to meet with. Good luck and stay safe.

  16. Nicolas B

Great show Wes and Kyle, I like to hear about the details of the face, creepy! 🙂

SidN, I don’t know if you would consider killing a sasqautch if you really consider it a nuisance. Maybe you can talk about it in the forum if you would be interested in that, some members seem to be interested in that kind of intervention to prove that SQ exists.

  17. David D

Got to watch out in those Catskill’s’! Remember Washington Irving, and his classic story of Rip-VanWinklle! Many of those old stories are based on legend’s’ and all the folklore that accompanies’ them; most of them are probably true. If you ever happen to see some little guys’ drinking ale, and playing nine-pin’, shoot first and apologize later! It’s not like they would report the incident to the authorities’ anyway!!

Wes any chance we could revisit this episode from his brothers point of view? I really think for these multiple witness encounters having both witnesses on at once, like the two K9 cops from West Texas, adds a ton of credibility and an interesting second perspective. See if you can revisit some of the older episodes by interviewing the other witnesses of the same experience.

Good story mr. anonymous New Yorker. Well told and I definately believe ya . This coming from a true Yankee hating Red Sox loving Bostonian. It’s also nice to hear people from the city that are into hunting since there aren’t too many in this part of the country. I wonder if you were using the fox pro predator call. That’s what I use. Clearly these creatures are greatly scattered in large wooded areas throughout the United States and Canada . I believe like the deer population and human population the Bigfoot population is greatly increasing . I think that with all the land development and the population increase for us and the Bigfoot this is causing more encounters than ever before. I myself am a hunter and trapper and I have had my own experiences that have caused me to leave my hunting area for the day. My wife and I also heard the owls turning to coyotes then turning to 100% monkey screaming sounds . the monkey screaming experience for me was in Virginia while camping late night around 2am . I’ve had a one on one scary encounter in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. One actually whistled at me then tree knocked and then growled. Very scary since It caught me off guard , i was alone ,and very close to it. That being said anyone who puts themselves out in deep wooded areas enough times has a huge possibility of experiencing the existence of these creatures. Anyone can find the proof they need to know that these animals exist. One day it will be proven .

Listened to about 5 minutes of this show and then canned it. I can’t stand hearing about people who kill animals for shits and giggles. I think it’s justice when the hunter becomes the hunter–why not?

  21. Earl H

Have the advertisements at the end been updated since this episode aired? If not, then listen to the 2nd one. It’s just odd because pre- 2020 it was very rare to hear people call any coronavirus by that exact name. Probably nothing, just caught my ear because I was washing dishes and couldn’t turn off the ads 🤣 btw I lived in nyc for 10 years. That dude was for real. No BS detected

  22. craig d

Mary D bet you don’t mind eating them though or are you in denial to your human nature? We are omnivores we eat meat and harvesting by hunting in the woods is providing the beat conservation possible. if you are too squeamish maybe go watch a knitting show.
    God give me strength.

  23. Holly B

Anyone offended at hunting coyotes has never lived with them. They are a nuisance! In the cities using canals killing every domesticated animal, farm animal in sight. If you kill them the females go into heat immediately having a larger litter. Fish and Game told us is best to let the coyote stay another will always move in. they scale six foot walls looking for YOUR dog and cat. They suck and I hope they all die.
