I don’t think Steven B is correct. In one of Buffy Saint Marie’s songs, she sings of Wendigo. She is a Cree from Canada, putting out albums since the 60’s and still is. She has a PhD and/but is very traditional. Years ago she was on the Muppet show, gently instilling/teaching Native culture. It is a very old term. Look up her music and that song.
