Man Has Arm Bit Off

I want to thank a listener, Joe for sending this to me.

Stories about Bigfoot- A Horror Sighting and encounter: A story told to me [John Sweet] to share publicly. More stories need to get out there. There is more about this animal people are not talking about. This one has never been shared before and it is very frightening.

At age 26, I spent time on a family trip to Medford Oregon. It was a sultry and humid summer and we were struggling as a family at the time. We decided to leave our small town in Utah to visit my uncle and aunt, who retired in Medford. I was a young and healthy man at the time- with no commitment- no wife or children. I had a lot on my mind at that time. I was a long distance runner and decided to take a run and take some alone time. I was not really sure which direction I would take- but I had a small fanny pack with a bit of food and water. I also had a camel pack  because I planned to spend the day out and about.

I started out on Summit Avenue and eventually ended up on Taylor Road. I was still in town but I wanted to try to get up in the mountains. So I kept going for about a mile to Old Stage Road. I don’t remember the small lane but it started with a “p” and I followed it straight up into the Gold Hill area. Seems irresponsible I know, but like I said- I had a lot on my mind and the beauty of that area captivated me.

At the end of the small lane- I found myself close to the top of a ridge. I started my run about 6 am and it was close to noon. I sat and had a snack and water. The air was tantalizing and the smell of the forest was intoxicating. I wanted to get to the top of the ridge and find the best view I could. I very much didn’t think it would take long.

I started hiking, off-trail, right up toward the summit through some thick forest.  The hike was extreme and I barely made it to what I thought was the ridge. But when I arrived- I saw another ridge with what seemed to be a road. Curiosity killed the cat and got the best of me- so I trekked off to the distant road. I reached a dirt road at the top of the ridge where I had an awesome view of the Rogue River. I could also see an open area of dirt and salty looking material where some strip mining of some kind was happening. So against better judgment I thought I was very close to civilization and thought I would follow this dirt road back down the mountain.

Well it didn’t go down the mountain. it just continued along the ridge line. Hours had passed and I was out of food. I had water and a camel pack. But was almost out. So I turned around in an attempt to retrace my steps. BIG mistake. I thought I retraced my steps back to the ravine I thought I climbed up. I started to descend and fell down a short cliff and hit my head which knocked me out cold.

When I awoke- the sun had started to set. I was still on the steep hill side, but a large tree had stopped me from continuing to fall. I wrestled to get my bearings straight. The sunset was amazing. Deep purples blended into an increasing blackened sky. I felt overwhelmed by a rotten smell of some kind. It reminded me of really bad milk someone had left in the fridge for WAY too long.

I tried to get up to my feet and get stable so I could figure out where I was. I had a lot of blood dripping down my face. So I wiped my eyes with my hand and when I opened my eyes I saw a massive animal with its arms and legs wrapped around a large tree like a gorilla. But its feet were not wrapped all the way around the tree it was using the insides of its feet to hold itself on the tree kind of like natives do when climbing up coconut trees. And the feet were very large and human looking.

I was only about 25 feet away from me. It just stared at me and didn’t move a muscle. A cold and dark fear came over me that I will not forget to this day. The hair was beautiful and full- all around the body, head fingers and on top of the feet. The sunset was lighting up the furry hair to a brilliant red color. The skin around his eyes, nose and mouth was hairless and dark grey. His finger nails were a similar dark gray, which really made them stand out and for some reason made his hands very frightening to me. Maybe because they were so massive and human looking. I could clearly see his eyes because he stared so intently at me as though he wanted to kill me. They were dark brown and the pupils were very dilated and jet black.

I couldn’t really see whites of his eyes just dark brown. His nostrils flared as he breathed and they seemed like dark caverns. His mouth was strangely broad with an even broader lower jaw. There really was no neck and he held his head low. It was getting darker and I wanted to get out of there. So I began to slowly move my way up the mountain and he just kept his eyes fixed right on me. The feeling was horrific. The fear I cannot describe. I continued and he stayed perfectly petrified  no movement except for his deadly eyes.

I got anxious and began moving more quickly. I kept my body and face toward him which caused me to begin moving up the hill backwards, resulting in my tripping over a log in a sudden jerking movement. At that moment, he leapt from the tree at a speed toward me I can’t describe. His decisive leap was extremely accurate because he landed nearly on top of me. Mind you that would have been a 25 foot span to cover through the air at least.

When he landed, he was straddling me with his one foot at the left of my legs and his one foot on the right. He squatted over me with his hands on his knees. At that moment I decided my life was over. With his massive hand, he reached down toward my waist, wrapped his banana like fingers around my fanny pack- and ripped it apart. He seemed to be looking for food of some kind. He did the same thing with my camel pack. Smelling the items and tasting them with his huge tongue.

I stayed as quiet as I possibly could during this ordeal. He continued to hover over me, breathing deeply through his massive nostrils. His chest was huge and made me feel like he could crush me instantly. He started smelling one side of my body my left arm and left leg. Then moved to my right leg and when he got to my right arm he took a bite with no hesitation. The bite was crushing and excruciatingly painful. His entire mouth fit around my forearm and I could hear my bones crushing.

He instantly stood up and I could see my lower arm and hand in his mouth and it took me time to realize he severed my arm in one quick bite. At once he jumped toward another large tree and grabbed it with his massive arms and stood on the sides of the tree using the insides of his feet. It was horrifying. He looked back at me with my lower arm still in his mouth and then jumped to the forest floor. I could hear him running through the trees. I stayed quiet and still, holding my arm in writhing pain, until I could no longer hear the animal running away.

And I DO call this beast and animal. He may have human features- but so do a lot of other primates, but that don’t make ’em human. Human’s don’t eat other humans- period! I get very tired of hearing people talk about these animals like they are “wildmen” not so. They are simply wild animals that eat big mammals and when hungry enough- that includes us. I got up and, by this time it was dark, started hiking as best I could up to the road. I attempted to walk along the road. I walked until it was very late and I began to feel too weak. I was shocked and amazed when I saw headlights. A USFS jeep was inspecting the area and found me- nearly passed out alongside the road.

I came to find out later he was searching for a Sasquatch but he didn’t call it a Sasquatch. He called it something that sounded like “Neferious” or “Neterious”. I don’t remember. He sad something about their “habitat” and how a few were losing their land and food source resulting in them searching for food closer to human settled areas. I guess I was the first big “food” source this animal had come across in a while. What I don’t understand is why he didn’t eat me entirely he was big enough to have done so.

He had to have been 10 feet tall. I was taken to a hospital and, of course, my story was not believed. It was decided by my doctors that a cougar had attacked me though no claw marks anywhere on my body just a missing arm.

    Oh dear–this is terrifying.

People should really never be out hiking or camping, hunting or anything, alone.

(I still think about how you had recently posted the information about the Ohio Forest Service people being given automatic weapons.
    WOW. That says a lot.)

There was a guy who belonged to Bigfoot forums who both Diane m and myself had become allied with. There weren’t very many of us belivers left there since they had been getting systematically weeded out (which is what happened to both Diane and myself). This guy who I had tried to get to join here with us had an amazing encounter and pictures too of a brown sasquatch watching him from a tree just like that. The guy told us that when he looked at it all he felt was it was an evil presence around it-hateful, evil, dangerous and possibly satanic. He told me that that sighting messed his brain up and he never wants another encounter like that. Of course even though the giuy had amazing photographic evidence to back his story up the jerks over there at bigfoot forum continued to tease the guy and make fun of the guy who saw a big scary monkey-man in the woods, and gave the most ridiculous observations as to what he was seeing because-it COULDN’T be a Sasquatch because THEY DON’T EXIST!!!! I wish I could see that picture again

I’m not familiar with the bigfoot forum James that you refer to… mainly because I made it habit not to join in anything at all up until Sasquatch Chronicles. I was researching and following Wes (and Woody) before the SC formed on my own and am well aware of the trolls that linger from websites, to forums, etc. You can always tell when they are shills because even the most available evidence to date will not influence their positions. This could possibly be one of those encounters. And I think there is something to the guy’s statement ( an evil presence around it-hateful, evil, dangerous and possibly satanic ) Seems it’s men who can describe best this “evil” force behind (or motivating) these creatures.

      • Andrew O

This might be the forum James is talking about:

        http://bigfootforums.com/

I’ve been a member on there for a few years now, and they aren’t very supportive of anyone really.

There are only a few genuine ‘knowers’ on there, and the rest are armchair skeptics, IMO.

I’d like to get ‘Salubrious’ as a guest on here, as his encounter was excellent, and has never been debunked.

    • Dave T

James, I believe the guy you’re referring to has become a member here. It sounds a lot like Gumshoeguy. Look for him on the forums and I’ll bet it’s him. Great guy with tons of info

…imagine we we knew even one third of similar occurrences…

I find it fascinating that this fellow mentions moments of visual beauty throughout this re-telling. Even of the Sasquatch itself. I’d love to hear him speak of it today

This terrifying account is exactly the reason I am enraged that the government continues to subvert the truth about Sasquatch. Yes, it’s complicated, but what important public issue or concern isn’t? Avoiding this issue because of it’s complexity is symptomatic of the circumstances surrounding those on Capital Hill and elsewhere…. There’s no authentic interest in enacting meaningful legislation that would aid the average citizen to whom they feign to represent.

Obviously, the “Sasquatch in the middle of the room” for the government is money. Profits over People is its mantra. Private property, logging, and other financial concerns are not more important than human lives! Clearly, the government’s internal mandate is to quell the truth at all costs. Their covert acts of intimidation, fear and monitoring of US citizens who’ve reported their encounters, and followed their hearts in searching for the truth is appalling. I’d wager if put before a jury of our peers, the government’s tactics used against these same citizens would be adjudicated as illegal acts.

    • Jenny

DAMN RIGHT Leah….I’m really really surprised people aren’t angrier about that!

Even if logging and mining were no more..Imagine the tourist dollars!!! but the logging, mining profiteers wouldn’t get a cut of that so hold on to your kiddies and your lives cause you guys are just Squatch fodder for all yer Gov cares about ya.

    • Janetta V

All very very well said Leah, but save all the typing. The government simply doesn’t care about us, or what we think. They are living out what it says on the “Georgia Guidestones”, Good day.

    • Kim S

Well said you guys…I think if enough people wake up to this fact…they’re screwed…can’t wait till that day and that days coming.people need to start watching less crap on tv and really researching the facts of the real reality we sadly live in today.????

  5. Tyler D

Whoa, what an incredible story. I feel like it’s sort of wrong to get some sort of enjoyment or entertainment from this poor guy’s extreme misfortune. It’s just an absolutely fascinating story regardless. I believe these kind of stories are the exact reason that the government keeps the existence of this animal suppressed from the general public. Once everyone realizes that we are no longer the top of the food chain any longer I believe there will be some sort of panic but to what degree is still uncertain. Man is so arrogant we wholeheartedly believe that nature is in our control. We have captured every large apex predator on this planet and put them on display in zoos. But these animals are on a different level all together. Their intelligence combined with their overwhelming strength, power n knowledge of their environment is something that we have never encountered, at least not in recent history anyways. These are animals we CAN NOT control like we have with all other predators prior n that will terrify us. And we all know the foolish and impulsive things mankind is capable of when we react out of fear

  6. Tyler D

This is kinda cheesy that I’m stealing a quote from Jurassic World- “Monster is a relative term. To a canary a cat is a monster. We’re just used to being the cat.”

      • S O

It’s stated in the first paragraph, “As told to”. Plus……um….I type with one hand. Also, there is speech recognition built right into Windows, as well as Dragon Naturally Speaking, for people who have difficulty using a keyboard. It sure would suck for someone, in addition to having a visual encounter, have their arm bitten off, and then have no one believe them about either.

        • Andrew S

Yes, it would suck to have an arm bitten off and not having anyone believe you. That being said, there are LOTS of people that think Bigfoot believers are “crazy” and they love making up stories to get people to waste their time listening to their encounter. There are also lots of people who just like telling stories for the attention or sheer enjoyment of it. Any good writer can make a fictitious story sound true. Obviously I can’t disprove his story, but a lot of things don’t add up.

          • kevin d

I agree with the people here not buying the story I know I would put some emphasis on the harsh reality of getting out of there with your arm being bitten off passing out from pain bleeding out etc. I’m not buying it I call BS on this he is such a badass he doesn’t go into shock and such a great description of how beautiful the beast is but doesn’t describe the pain and torture it would’ve been to get out of the forest after his arm was bitten off
Very interesting story though very entertaining

I think that a good portion of these terrifying accounts with sasquatch, inbreeding might play a rather big role in it. If you think about it we have been encroaching on these animal’s land since we arrived on this continent. Which will push them into other regions of the country which more than likely restricts and reduces their food source. And I think we all know what happens to animals when their food source is reduced, their numbers seem to diminish. Which in turn can lead to inbreeding to keep the existence of their species goin. A wild animal is dangerous enough as is but an inbred wild animal is even more dangerous, even more aggressive and even more impulsive. Keep in mind this is all speculation n just a theory of mine. And I believe this accounts for only a small portion of these aggressive encounters. But I thought it made a lot of sense

  8. Jenny

Great story…to hear but not to live through!
I’m glad he made it out alive. .I believe his story…It wouldn’t be the first case of a human , being horribly injured and walking away.
happens all the time…being super fit prob helped.

He’s wrong tho, humans kill and eat each other all the time.

  9. WALT D

I have heard this story before and it is believable if he was bitten around the elbow , however at the shoulder area no he would not survive this. He somehow made it to the road in the dark in a area he was not familiar with in shock ! I don’t buy this one ! Good story teller though.

  10. WALT D

Ahhhh Linda Newton Perry had the story 2 yrs ago and yes it was his forearm. If it was true jeeeez.Apparently a 10 footer lives in that area of the rogue river and has been seen for a long time. It could be so old it had to grab easy pickings. Still I find it hard to believe.

    • r v

Hmmmm…… yeeeeeeah…. You weren’t there, you say? I don’t recall anyone saying you werrrrrrrrre. Sounds like you’re mighty defensive there… You wouldn’t happen to be a TEN-FOOT SASQUATCH, would you —- “ROBERT”!?! “People live through things like all the time”, do they? Sasquatch rationalization at its finest…

  11. Dave S

Hate to say but no mention of how he stopped the bleeding…. Hiking back to a road losing blood in the dark, he got lost during the daytime!! Let’s see a pic of him. 1/2.arm huh

  12. Jan W

I believe the story. I also find it fascinating that the FS guys who picked him up referred to the creature by it’s given scientific name, which was only known to a few insiders…

    • Christian L

It’s possible if the bite was traumatic enough that the arteries were crushed not bleeding out easily. That was my concern as well…..how was he lost then managed to wander back to a road in the dusk or dark w a major artery severed and a head injury…. Story reads well and is possible….not trying to be too pessimistic but an interview would probably clear up some of the finer points. Damn dirty apes…don’t hike alone or unarmed…

  13. michael n

I remember the story of the guy CUTTING his arm off with a dull pocket knife after it was wedged between a rock and a canyon wall. Remember that movie?, a true story! He then hiked out of the desert and lived. So this story seems completely plausible. I think that movie was called 127 hours or something close. People have survived far worse than that. I saw a guy tell his story about getting mauled by a bear and literally had the skin of his head hanging over his face, was buried by the grizzly til it could come back and eat him. His friend that was up a tree climbed down after the bear left and they had to hike out of the mountains to safety.

  14. FlagStaffer

That’s a super gnarly one armer story!
Did the arm that “Squatch made off with have a watch or bracelet or any rings or jewelry on it?
When did it happen? Just say’n it might be possible to lure that bad boy in with some cheap radio Shack watch batteries if enough
    “time” has passed…………..

  15. Joe B

Awesome story. Could be true. As far as him bleeding out… I was a paramedic and one of the things you find out is that severed arms don’t always bleed that much. What happenes is the artery will actually suck back up into the remaining part of the limb and reduce the bleeding. Since it was already severed using a belt to cinch it off would also help. If he could survive the initial shock he could be ok.

On a side note I find it facinating that people have a harder time believing a guy didn’t bleed to death from an amputated arm then a 10 foot Bigfoot chewing it off. Lol.

  16. Theresa D

I just checked out the link to this story that Knobby posted…most of these reported encounters have taken place in Southern Oregon…especially check out post # 79 and #98 in the archives!

  17. Paul M

If you think it’s true…. or ya think it’s BS…. I’m the one with the BOOMSTICK. No my names not ASH. But we need to be ready. Give em some 12 GA sugar BABY..
    .

  18. Andrew O

This seems at first to be an amazing and terrifying experience for the chap, but I do wonder why the creature didn’t kill him first.

It does all seem very odd, but I give the guy a hand for coming forward as he has. ;o)

Would be good to hear him on the show, though.

  19. William C

The fact that his body would have gone into shock and with his arm being bitten or torn and was not a clean cut he would have bleed out fairly quickly.
It’s a interesting story, but not even close to plausible.

  20. Reo

Sorry guys, but I find this story to be highly suspicious. Why haven’t we heard about words like norteros prior to the Miller Doc? This story seems very contrived.

Show me the one-armed John Sweet, and let’s spend a little time corroborating his story.

Sorry to be the Debbie Downer, but I have to speak up if I smell a fish. Fabrications and hoaxes are the enemies to legitimate Sasquatch research. They muddy the water for all of us.

I vote that we keep Sasquatch Chronicles as serious and as straight forward as it has been this far. If it falls into the hands of the weirdos and the story-tellers than we’ll lose any legitimacy that we’ve gained this far.

Of course, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but please, friends, let’s be skeptical of stuff like this.

  21. Reo

John Sweet seems to be saying that this is the first time the story has been told.

What exactly does he mean by that?

This story SCREAMS fake, and really irritates me because it discredits and disrespects all of the awesome people who have the courage to forward with REAL encounters.

I vote to remove it from the website. Do we want to be the group that propagates lies and hoaxes?

  22. Reo

Anyone can look at a map and use real street names for their fake story. The fact that he uses real street names and place names means nothing.

This one-armed Bigfoot victim does not exist. This story is fake and extremely irritating.

  23. Elise B

I looked at Google Earth for Medford area, and as is remarked above, the places work and are real. The guy seems to have run about 20 miles by noon. Then strikes off across country off trail, then heads to a distant ridge road place, then falls off a cliff? Now one CAN run that much in the time given, but you’d be hecka tired after that first 20 miles. Then to go off trail and then off in another direction and expect to make it home the same day?

  24. Manuel A

The smell of blood from his head area I believe cause the Bigfoot to take a bite from the
man’s body. Who’s to say what is truth and what is not.
Something happen to his arm, sounds God awful.

  25. Jan W

The way the creature smelled the victim’s body from top to bottom was also interesting. A close friend of mine had bone cancer and in the early stages and before being diagnosed, he developed a small tumor on his shin bone. Our dog was constantly sniffing the exact spot of his tumor and I later read about dogs being able to smell cancer. I think BF would do the same, as they wouldn’t want to bite off a tainted limb. Maybe the man’s arm was the only body part that passed the smell test.

  26. Danny T

I’m in “this is a tall tale” group. It’s unbelievable. Here we have an armless man who miraculously didn’t bleed out instantly and was able picked up by the military who proceeded to tell the injured one arm man that he was in the woods looking for Sasquatch or Nefarious. Yea right.
I have some ocean front property in Arizona if anyone’s interested. Real cheap.

  27. Scott

Oh…this story is supposed to be real? Wow, the whole time I was reading it I just kept thinking that I would get to the end and there would be a footnote as to what new fictional book this came from. If a Sasquatch was to take my arm, I think I would be shouting it from the highest mountains. I would try and rally people to organize a campaign to let the world know that these things are out there and they are eating humans. I would make sure that the law makers knew that I now know these forearm biting, gorgeous haired, high jumpin apes are real and they are hungry. That person really spun a nice web of suspense and intrigue, and the story was titillating and entertaining. But I have to trust my gut on this one. It would sure make a good script.

  28. Manuel A

    Thank You “Negative~Nathan”
    for your temper tantrum.
    These words Sasquatch-Bigfoot,
most people do not believe to be real.
I find it odd you’re upset over this subject matter of Bigfoot biting
    a mans arm off?
Just because YOU fail to believe one mans encounter does not
    mean his story is false.
“You don’t mean to offend anyone” well, you did.

  29. Don O

This has the flavor of someone telling a story, rather than recalling a real event. Plus the added shock/fear/adrenalin would have likely caused him to bleed out and/or lose consciousness and die where he sat if it were true. I call BS on this one.
