A listener writes “Northeast PA in 1998-99. My friend and I, who were about 17 years old at the time, were driving on route 79 from Windsor, NY to Susquehanna, PA. We live right on the PA/NY border. We were country girls.

We spent our days hiking deep in the woods. Exploring caves and creeks and the Susquehanna river. We wandered the woods day or night. As we were about 1 mile out of town, this creature came up from the river bank and ran directly in front of her cool little silver Honda CrX. We bumped it and it ran up the steep hill into the woods. It actually left a crack in the bumper!!! We both looked at each other in panic. “What the fuck was that?” I screamed. She yelled, “omg, did I hit a person?!

I told her we had to turn around and go back, which is crazy because it was grey, hairless and ugly and ran on all four legs. It looked similar to the creature from Lord of the Rings when we bumped it with the corner of the passenger front bumper, it turned and looked into the car and I saw its entire face and yellowish eyes as it rolled into the ditch. It was so eerie. Its face was human like. It was hairless and greyish.

It ran like a chimpanzee on all fours. We went back to see if we could find it but didn’t. We looked for it up the mountain with a flashlight. Then we just rode home silently and creeped out and went to bed. We talked about it while hiking the next day. We were still confused but just let it go. She went to college shortly after and we lost contact.

I still think about it every day. I drive by and vividly remember the exact spot. It was so eerie. It makes my blood run cold. I never told a single person until about five years ago. I appreciate your show. I like to know that other people out there see things that really just don’t make sense but change your life.”

A listener writes “I grew up in Northern MS in pretty much a 5 mile wide town in the sticks called Walnut Ms where I grew up and lived for 23 years. I now reside about 19 miles away outside of a slightly bigger city called Corinth.

I live on outskirts of there in very dense country and bottoms known as the Hatchie. Although I grew up fishing and hunting in the woods throughout my childhood, and teens my encounter actually happened on new years of this year. My girlfriend was also a witness at the same time but from a different perspective. I had never given much though to Bigfoot or anything of the sort, and I’m also not claiming that’s what this was. But after finding your channel literally maybe 4 or 5 days ago it’s starting to really startle me and has me wondering. Me and my gf have experienced very odd things together and we keep things to ourselves because our families, while nothing wrong with it, are very traditional with strong Christian beliefs who aren’t very open to things that aren’t on your baseline of everyday normalcy.

So to keep the peace we usually keep things to ourselves, and this experience was no different. We are very open minded individuals and we’ve always been interested in the extraterrestrial and the unknown. But to not waste anymore of your time, since it’s very short and nothing near as wild as I’ve heard on your show I’m not expecting to be on your show I just would like to share my story with someone who will at least know I’m telling the truth and not write it off as craziness. But anyways, we recently moved to a new place in a much more secluded area surrounded by woods with lots of deer and wildlife and we have neighbors but its all broken up with woods and behind us is nothing but fields and woods.

New years eve night of 2024, we expected people to be shooting fireworks and blowing up tannerite as it was normal for July 4th and New Years in the south where we live. However this was our first new years and our 2nd or 3rd month in this new place and we wasn’t sure how much to expect as far as neighbors celebrating. Around 11pm a huge explosion went off of what I can only guess was tannerite and it was so close and so much was used at once that it shook our entire house. Me being prior military, I was alittle unhappy and it put me into a slight rage that someone would blow so much up so close to our house so I got up and ran outside to see if I could hear another one go off or people hollering and maybe see who blew it up and ask them to please be more careful, and so I went outside through the back door which is the main door we use and it faces our backyard with lots of woods and I stepped off the porch and rounded the end of the house outside the reach of the porch light so I could see across the road and the neighbors houses. I

stood in the shadow of the end of the house and was just listening hoping to hear as I said a direction of the explosion or people setting said explosion and no longer than I could fully plant my feet and stand completely still, (also the explosion and me running outside to the end of the house all happened within maybe 10 seconds) but no longer than I planted my feet I heard behind me about 200 yards or so down in the woods what sounded like a pissed off bull hauling ass towards me and breaking tree limbs and trees and it’s not coming slowly, it’s hauling absolute ass. It’s moving with a purpose. Well with all the farmers, fields, cattle etc I really did think it was probably a horse or bull etc that had gotten spooked by the huge tannerite explosion and all the other distant explosions going off and was trying to get away. Well the closer thus thing got and the longer I listened I quickly realized that’s not what it was because I could hear it breathing heavily. I was locked in fear if I’m being honest and at first I wanted to run but I couldn’t, I stood there as this thing ran through the woods breaking limbs and crash through and just waited to see whatever it was and mentally was preparing to defend myself if I even could.

About that time this thing busts out of the woods and into darkness and it’s striding in huge strides and I can barely see the silhouette and it ran about 15 yards past me and the porch light faded off about 20 feet from the porch and it stayed about 2 feet outside of that never entering the light, it ran to the edge and I couldn’t only see a shiny glistening of what I think was black hair, but what caught me off caught was the breathing and I could feel the heaviness of it’s feet in my chest as it ran and it seemed to be running on all 4s but the way it sounded, it didn’t seem like it should have been. It continues and never stops and rounds around the corner of the house and I can still hear it running and breathing but I can’t see it, about this time I can hear my gf run on the front porch out of the front door and she’s hollering my name and about the time she goes to say my name a second time she stops and the door slings open and she runs back in and runs back out on the back porch and she’s still calling my name and I tell her I’m over here I’m okay because she sounded obviously shaken.

Well I walked towards her and we walked back in the house and I had absolutely no intention of telling her what I had seen whatsoever. But when I got into the house she was on the verge of tears and was visibly shaken and upset and she wouldn’t tell me. “She kept saying you’re gonna say I’m crazy and that it was just my imagination.” And I finally told her if I tell you what I seen, will you tell me what you saw? She ended up telling me and I will even let her tell what she seen in her own words if she’d be willing.

But when the explosion went off and I ran outside she instantly got on our ring camera on our back door. She watched me run outside and was trying to keep and eye on me, when I ran around the corner she waited for a second and said she could hear something on the camera and she heard a crash and she couldn’t see me in the back so she ran out on the front porch to try and find me, and about that time she seen something hunkered over on all 4s hauling ass along side the tree line around the corner of the house and it ran up the side of the tree line towards the road and rand off into the tree line at the top. And after she told me that it all lined up and when I was outside and it ran around the corner away from me she had come out front right at the time to catch it coming around the other side.

So we both seen it at different sides of the house. Once she told me that I stood there stunned, we both walked over sat on the couch and didnt speak or talk or turn anything on the tv for at least an hour, we just sat together in fear and silence. When we did speak it wasn’t of that the rest of the night, we didn’t mention it until the next day and I didn’t sleep that night. I stayed up on the couch with my shotgun in the corner next to me watching my ring camera. As a marine, I’m kind of ashamed to admit that, but it’s the truth. I was truly scared and still think of it almost 2 months later daily.

If you read all of that I truly appreciate you taken the time to do so and hear me out. Whether Im ever on your show or not I feel better getting this off my chest because we cant even tell people closest to us. So thank you Wes, and thank you for the work and effort you continue to put into your show for people like me. If we were to ever speak, or anything, I can share video or pictures or FaceTime, I can show you our property and the layout of the front yard and backyard and how the house faces and, the camera and porchlight etc. walk through the story that way and it’ll make more sense. It’s small compared to others I’ve heard on your show, and I know I didn’t see completely, but the sounds and the speed, the breathing, the way it came through these thick woods and breaking and snapping trees and limbs I truly do not know what the hell this thing was.

I’ve had other experiences, such as being yelled at across the river when I was 13 by something fishing with my uncle and he wrote it off as a deer, and while I know deer can huff and growl this was what sounded to me like a mixture of multiple animals and it gave me a feeling of not being welcome there. I grew up outdoors, Ive been trained in outdoors and lived outside for months seen alot of wild things in the sky but that night this thing running by me, the breathing, the sounds and my gf seeing it too has topped it and we have yet to speak to each other about it very much until tonight after I got her to watch your videos. Anyways, I won’t take anymore of your time. Thank you Wes!”

As Kevin and his friend heard strange footsteps circling their campsite, the forest grew unnervingly quiet, building an atmosphere of dread. The breaking point? A scream so loud, so unnatural, that they fled through the woods in sheer terror, leaving everything behind.”

Scary Sasquatch Encounter While Camping

Kirk writes “I have 3 experiences to share and they each took place 10 years apart. I’m going to share the experience I had in October of 2012 in this first email. It took place in Otter Falls which is a little lake resort in the White Shell area in south eastern Manitoba Canada.

My girlfriend at the time had recently gone through something traumatic and I had been working hard all summer long so we both felt like we just needed some calm and some nature. We rented a nice little log cabin right on the lake which is Margaret Lake. You can actually kayak from Margaret Lake all the way to Sylvia Lake and around this huge landmass which is Carter Island and then through Eleanor Lake to get back to Otter Falls. The round trip around Carter Island is about 12 kms. The cabin had a hot tub inside it and a nice big screen. It had nice granite slabs of rock by the lake which made it easy to get a canoe in and out of the lake. We rented the cabin for a couple of nights and when we were paying for our cabin the host told us that we were the only ones at the resort as it was October which I enjoyed hearing at the time bc we were really looking forward to some silence. Our first day and night were really enjoyable as we took our time enjoying the outdoors. We had rented a canoe and had a very relaxing time on the lake and we had a nice quiet first night. On the second day we once again canoed during the day and we got a nice fire going during the evening. A nice layer of fog was moving in so we went into the cabin and warmed up in the hot tub and then watched a movie we had rented earlier in the day from the same host, some Russel Brand vacation comedy.

We snuggled into bed and she crashed hard right away and stayed up for about an hour doing stuff on my phone and trying to shield the light from my phone from her field of view. All of a sudden, while I was laying there quiet in my bed next to my out cold girlfriend…all of the hair on my whole body stood up and I got the craziest goosebumps I’ve ever experienced and it went quiet like sooooooo quiet that all I could hear was my own heartbeat and I remember sliding a bit lower under my covers because it made me feel less seen and safer. I also remember thinking to myself ‘am I having a stroke or something?’and then my girlfriend wakes up out of a cold hard sleep and she looks at me and says ‘whats up with the energy in here?’…I could not believe that she could feel it too but I didn’t want to alarm her so I told her that I thought that a storm might be coming in and that everything was going to be fine and she should go back to sleep which she did.

She wears earplugs and an eye piece to bed and when she puts on both its lights out for her.so she goes back to bed but I could feel that something was still off so I got out of bed super quietly to try not waking her but honestly more to not have whatever was outside hear where I was in the cabin. There was a nice long ramp/deck that has to be walked across to get to the cabin door so I felt safeish that nothing was on the deck yet because I would’ve heard it.

It was so pitch black that I couldn’t even see my hand right in front on my face and as I looked out the cabin front window I realized just how dark and alone we were as there were no other lights on for miles. As I finally exited the bedroom, trying my best to not make even a squeak on the floor I took my first step out of the bedroom…to my left(the direction of the ramp/deck which had a railing on the left side of it which actually surrounded the whole deck)I heard the creak of something big step onto the deck and slowly take another step with a long creak again and then again. At first I thought maybe it was the host messing w us but the sound of the creak on the deck was too substantial. And then I thought maybe it’s a moose but there wasn’t any hoof sounds on the deck. And then the creaking stopped and I realized that whatever it was was standing just outside the cabin door and had stopped moving. I stood there in my underwear in the pitch black 5 feet from the door with a hatchet in my hand ready to cut off or hack whatever came in.

I stayed in one ready to hack position for approximately 25 to 30 mins Wes..and then I realized that I hadn’t taken a breath in a very long time so I finally let out a big sigh /exhale and as soon as I did I could hear something on the other side of the wall outside the cabin do the same thing only deeper and louder and then I heard something take 2 quick steps on the deck and make a grunt sound like it jumped over the deck railing and took off into the woods. I didn’t sleep the rest of the night and stayed close to the door but nothing else happened the rest of the night and in the morning we took off back for Winnipeg. I grew up in the bush Wes..I was an eagle Scout and spent every weekend building cool forts and making trails with my friends out in St Malo, St Pierre and Grunthal areas of southern Manitoba. We would always be out catching frogs and turtles in swamps and gravel pits and I’ve had a lot of bear experiences and some moose experiences too. I even came almost nose to nose with a black bear before as in our noses almost touched before I scared it off by moving lol. I’m not a hunter so I never have a gun on me personally but I’m definitely not against hunting l.I was more like a nature ninja and especially loved when I could watch animals when they didn’t know I was watching them. Ive been chased by moose and bear before and I’ve felt that flight fear before but this was something very different. The way it went quiet like that was so terrifying that I honestly didn’t even want to see whatever was on the deck. Like what has the ability to alter it’s surrounding environment like that???Anyways, that’s what happened to us and although I never saw anything with my own eyes I felt something that I’ve never felt before or head before. Thanks for your show and your approach with your guests Wes. You do such a great job at giving your guests the floor to tell their story. I’ll send you my next experience that happened in August of 2022(also at Otter Falls) in my next email.”

Ernest writes “This encounter takes place in 2001 in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. I was 16 years old. I am 40 now. My three younger sisters and I were coming back from visiting our baby cousin who was recently born. It was about 10 pm driving down the road and headed back home.

We see a figure walking down the side of the road, just casually. I mentioned to my sister in the front seat it was awful late to be walking down a dark road without any type of lights. I slow down as I come up behind him. He stood about 9 to 10 feet tall with almost a dark fur coat.

He slowly turned his head, and he had the evilest yellow eyes I have ever seen. By this time, my younger sisters are in the back seat screaming and crying, saying don’t stop Ernie. I proceed to lock the doors and speed off. To this day we all have the same story. My sister’s age at the time is 15 8 6.”

We will also be speaking to Sara. Sara writes “I was driving in Kansas somewhere just a few miles from Norton. It was about 730 in the morning, the sky was clear blue, no wind, just cold. Out of the blue I felt something hit the back end of my car. It hit me hard enough to look in my rear view mirror…I saw nothing.

Then I looked in the Sideview mirror and saw something that looked to be about the size of a small pony or large dog…running across the road. The fields were empty, just fences and fields getting ready to be planted. I got a clear view of it. It had long flowing brown and white hair, like what you would see on an Afghan hound.

On the whole body, my brain immediately thought I should stop because I assumed it was a dog. In the middle of nowhere then I saw where the head should be and my brain couldn’t compute at all, because it was a human face looking right at me as it ran across the road.

I do not understand what I saw but the vision is clear in my head two weeks later….my son thinks it was a skin walker, or dog man…but I don’t really believe in that so I am not sure what to think…I am just curious if there have been any other similar sightings in the area or if I saw something that I just can’t explain. I would love your opinion.”

I have an upcoming witness who has seen the light on two different occasions. The Spooklight (also called the Hornet Spooklight, Hollis Light and Joplin Spook Light) is an atmospheric ghost light on the border between southwestern Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma, a few miles west of the small town of Hornet, Missouri.

It’s an old mystery that has baffled locals and visitors alike for over a century. Since 1881, travelers on a desolate stretch of Ottawa County backroads have reported sightings of an enigmatic flickering light appearing over the countryside.

Known as the Spook Light, there have been several explanations offered as to its nature and origins, from extraterrestrial activity to the spirit of a Quapaw woman searching for her lost lover, but to this day no one knows exactly what this bizarre anomaly is or where it comes from.

The mysterious Joplin spook light

A listener writes “My eldest son Tyler and his younger brother Will visited a close friend one weekend in Hulbert, Oklahoma, around 2006. It was late at night, and summer had just begun. They eagerly set out to explore the lush pine forest encircling their friend’s house. Although they had ventured into familiar woods at home countless times, the sprawling expanse of trees on their friend’s family property held an irresistible appeal. Several towering pine trees made uncovering hidden trails and secret clearings a true adventure for the boys.

When Tyler shared this story with me at the time, I wasn’t thinking about Bigfoot, and I doubt he was either. It wasn’t until recently that I started listening to various podcasts and watching videos about Bigfoot and its behavior that it prompted me to bring it up with him. This is his story and how he recounted what happened that summer night.

The three boys started walking through a large field and talking among themselves as they approached a small trail into the dense woods when Nick, their friend, suddenly heard a knocking sound. However, no one paid any real attention to it, and they continued walking on. But as they journeyed farther into the darkness, Ty had said he felt a strange uneasiness as if danger was close by, but they all had been out in these woods before, and nothing had ever bothered them. So, he shook it off and pushed back his concern, but then, seemingly out of nowhere, something massive started charging through the woods toward them. The boys, around 13 or 14 years old, didn’t know what to do. With nothing to protect themselves, they ran. Each described it as massive and so big they could actually feel the ground pounding as it approached them. Ty remarked that he would never forget the sound it made—it was so intense that he could hear it breathing as if it were breathing down his neck. He’d never heard anything like it… none of them did.

The boys ran in fear toward an abandoned pickup truck in the middle of an open field. This field was near Nick’s house, and a streetlight or floodlight illuminated the area nearby. Once they climbed into the back of the pickup, they turned to see what was chasing them. But whatever it was had stopped dead in its tracks just on the light’s edge, never stepping directly into the illuminated area. Yet, they could hear it moving and breathing heavily, and the boys were frozen in fear. Ty said he had never been so scared in his life. Even his brother admitted that he thought he was going to die because he wouldn’t be able to outrun whatever was chasing them. After a few moments, the presence disappeared, and they could no longer hear it breathing or pacing. They stayed in the back of the old pickup for a little longer to ensure it was safe. Eventually, they jumped down and quickly ran back to their friend’s house.

Immediately, they informed Nick’s father, who stated he had no cows in the area. However, he suggested it could have been an ostrich, as an ostrich farm was not far away. That might explain what they had encountered. I’m not an expert on ostriches, but don’t they usually sleep at night? Why would something chasing them stop right at the edge of a well-lit area? What would cause it to linger in the darkness, staying out of sight instead of moving forward?

I’m relieved they were able to find safety, although they were all quite shaken by the experience. To this day, we still don’t know what was chasing them. I can’t help but wonder if it might have been a sasquatch urging them to leave the area and frightening them in the process. Honestly, I don’t know, but it certainly makes me wonder.”

Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, July 18, 1899. Not since Black Bart, the highwayman, terrorized the northern peninsula of Michigan and part of Wisconsin, has there been as much excitement in this region as there was this week owing to the capture of the wild man in the woods fifty miles from here. The strange creature is now in the jail here and is utterly unable to give any account of himself. He is evidently insane and has the peculiar cunning so often shown by lunatics. He refuses to utter any intelligible sound, if indeed he is able to after his long life of solitude in the woods, and the authorities are in a quandary as to what disposition to make of him.

For a long time reports have been coming to the office of Constable Burnett about a wild man having been seen here and there in the forests. The stories came from places far remote, but all tallied as to his general description, saying he was an aged man with beard and hair flowing over his face and shoulders and matted as though he had been in the woods away from civilization for a long time. He was described as very difficult of approach, as he made his way through the woods by a series of springs like those of a kangaroo, using both arms and legs in his strange methods of locomotion. Not much credence was placed in this feature of the stories, as it was supposed that those who saw the wild, man were so scared or excited that to their imaginations he appeared to be springing through the air like an animal. So many reports were heard of the crazy man that farmers, hereabouts as well as other settlers, became decidedly timorous about leaving the woman and children unprotected in their homes lest he should come into the towns or settlements and attack somebody in his insane fury, and many requests were made of Constable Burnett that he should organize a posse and go forth to search for and capture the wild man. To all these he was obliged to say that the where abouts of the man were so much a mystery that it would be foolish to begin a general search of the mighty forest extending for miles in every direction, although the constable was as anxious as any one that the fellow should be captured.

The Search Has Begun.
Finally, however, word was received here that the wild man had been seen in the woods at a place about fifty miles away and that he could easily be captured, as he seemed to have no weapons or implements of defense, and Constable Burnett at once took a train to the nearest railroad station to where he was said to have been seen. There he soon organized a posse of fifty men and the search began. The party divided up into squads and began beating the woods in every direction, having arranged a signal to call all together if the man should be found, and when the search had gone on a few hours the signal was sounded by the squad headed by Constable Burnett. When the others gathered they saw the object of their search sitting in the fork of a tree a short distance from the ground and glaring wildly and angrily at the men who surrounded him. His only covering, aside from his long hair, was an old gunny sack twisted around his shoulders in the form of a robe and he was indescribably dirty and repulsive looking. The wild gleam in his eyes betrayed his insanity and it was decided to use caution in capturing him. On his head was a dirty old coonskin cap, which was not at first noticed, so matted and tangled was his hair.

The circle around the tree was gradually narrowed down, leaving the wild man no chance for escape unless he were able to break through the ring of determined men who advanced upon him with ropes and clubs intent upon taking him alive. When the space separating the tree from the invaders was not more than ten feet the wild man suddenly sprang from the tree with a howl of rage and rushed directly upon his pursuers. Toward the point he evidently selected for escape all the men suddenly sprang and in a moment the wild creature turned again and with the peculiar spring which had been described to the sheriff attempted to flee. He threw his weight upon both hands and feet and with a strong movement of the legs like a kangaroo, threw himself forward, to land again upon his hands and feet six feet away.

Captured at Last
His remarkable speed in this odd manner of locomotion completely surprised the pursuers and he nearly escaped, but several who were fleet of foot ran in a roundabout course among the trees
and headed him off. Then ensued a terrific battle. The men sought to cast ropes around his limbs, but he struck and bit at them viciously. Half a dozen hands seized him at once, but with marvelous strength for so old a man he wriggled himself free from the detaining grasps and sprang forward again. When he was captured a second time one of the foremost in the posse threw himself upon the wild man and the two rolled upon the ground in a fearful struggle, striking and scratching at each other. The farmer endeavored to grasp on the throat of the wild man, but the latter was too wary and tore of the hand half a dozen times. Meanwhile the rest of the posse were hovering around the two struggling men, seeking to lend aid to their companion, but fearing to injure him by interfering. At last the farmer who was wrestling with the crazed man proved the stronger of the two and succeeded in turning his adversary on his back. At once a dozen strong men seized the wild man and ropes were thrown around him and he was rendered incapable of doing any further damage.

A wagon was procured and the man was hauled to a railroad station and thence brought to this place. He appears to be about 60 years old, but cannot give an account of himself. He will not tell where he came from, although some of his mumblings have been construed to mean that he hails from Canada. This however, the officials do not believe. By some he is thought to be the man who was unaccounted for after the disastrous fire in Hinckley, Minn., in 1894.

Everyone was accounted for either living or dead at the time except one man and it is thought that this creature may be that man who, crazed by the fear of the conflagration and the scenes he witnessed there, fled to the woods and has roamed there ever since, living on wild animals and birds and sleeping in hollow trees and caves.

A listener writes “My encounter occurred in northcentral Minnesota, on the southern border of the Chippewa National Forest, near the small town on Longville, MN. The date was January 11, 2974 (night of…). The only reason I can track this is because the Minnesota Vikings played the Miami Dolphins in the Superbowl, that following Sunday, and we watched the game on a 14 inch screen, black/white and “snowy” TV. I was 11 and 1/2 years old.

We traveled 6 hours north of our home/farm in southern Minnesota to go snowmobiling at our family’s cabin, east of Longville. Longville is a small community of roughly 200 residents. In the 70’s, I think the town’s population sign indicated 171 people living there. Our cabin was one of two cabins on the south side of a small lake – Little Rice Lake. Today there are roughly ten cabin on that stretch, but back then it was very remote and serviced by an unplowed forest trail. Grass grew in the center area between the tire ruts on this road – pretty rugged. We would deer hunt the thousands of acres of wooded land south of our property.

To “set the stage” of the incident that our whole family experienced, you must realize how cold the night was… I recall the night being so cold that the snow was “sugar snow.” When the weather gets below zero Fahrenheit, packed snow starts to squeak under you feet. When colder than twenty below, and colder, unpacked snow becomes what we called “sugar snow” – which means it crystalizes and becomes likes grains of sugar – very slippery and granulated, in contrast to “powder snow” that is light and skiers love… Sugar snow becomes hard to drive in as wheels/tires simply spin out and cannot gain traction.

Anyway, on our way into the cabin at about 9:00 Friday evening, out truck, pulling two snowmobiles on a trailer, became stuck on the trail in about 500 yards from our cabin. I recall my father swearing as scoop-shovels were unloaded from the back of our pickup and shoveling commenced. The temperature was cold! It was right around -25 to -30 below, straight temperature. Zero wind. Extremely calm and starry night.

Dad began to complain about the “smell of a bear.” I couldn’t smell it at all. I even walked around the truck to try to smell it – to his side of the truck. It concerned him enough that he told me to “get in the truck cuz it smells close.” I told him, “Bears should be hibernating…” The smell was so concerning that he had my mother shining a flashlight in the woods to keep an eye out while we shoveled. A discussion ensued regarding the whole situation and weird smells (I still couldn’t smell it – he said it was more on his side of the truck – that’s the only place he could smell the odd odor…) and we got the truck unstuck – driving the remaining distance to the cabin. A roaring fire was started, electric space heater turned on high, and we hit the rack for the evening.

In hindsight, I have realized how 1.) no bear was out and about in -30 temps and in the middle of January and 2.) smells don’t transfer to our olfactory systems very efficiently in such temperatures – they just don’t.

Somewhere between 11:30 and midnight, we were all startled awake with an incredible sound. We all awoke immediately, as the volume of the sound was only comparable to the roar of a lion, yet it was a screaming sound. As my father put it, “The sound of a woman being raped…” I recall the sound last 30 seconds, with no break in the volume/intensity. The intensity of the sound/scream basically shook the cabin. You could feel it. Dad loaded the shotgun, turned on a floodlight that shined over the area behind the cabin but DID NOT go outside. Looking out the windows, nothing was seen. We were all extremely shaken due to the intensity of this scream. I have told a handful of people about this only to be told, “Oh, it was just a bobcat or fisher during breeding season… Bullshit. They didn’t hear/feel the volume/resonance. The definition of “resonance” includes descriptors such as “reverberating” and “synchronous vibration of nearby objects,” – yes – vibration/shaking was felt. Incredibly intense… We couldn’t sleep for an extended time and finally got back to sleep.

The following day there were tracks in the deep snow behind the cabin. Big tracks. But there was no talk of anything and any further. Year later, while deer hunting an “island” in the middle of a large swamp, I found a tree structure that looked like a tepee, except it was built out of 25-30 spruce and jackpine. The structure was 20-some logs in number and the logs were all about 12-18 inches in circumference. I am 6’3″ and 250 lbs, a former college athlete – and I couldn’t lift them. The “island” was about 60 feet wide and 120 feet long. The only reason I could get back to that island was the peat bog had frozen and I followed a deer trail through the frozen bog, in hopes of jumping a big buck. This was remote!!

The family rarely talked about that night. It was passed off as “unexplainable” – and my father always said, “It sounded like a woman being raped, or beaten, but with incredible volume. And who is going to be walking around in -30 temps, screaming. I asked my mom a few months ago of her memories of that night and she confirmed my memories. But that was it. I know what we heard/felt…”

A listener writes “I was driving in Kansas somewhere just a few miles from Norton.
