“What was that?”

A listener writes “I really enjoy your podcast and wanted to tell an encounter I had in 2013 in laurens county, South Carolina.

My 10 year old son and I were deer hunting about a mile from our home. We were hunting on a small cattle farm on the edge of our town. We planted food plots for the deer and have elevated blinds around the fields. Thick pines surrounded this particular plot we were hunting. It was clear and cool on this evening hunt.

Right at dark, I shot a deer and it ran back into the thick pines. We gathered up our stuff and climbed out of the blind to track the deer. So we started into the pines with flashlights. We followed blood for about 50 yards and from right in front of us comes and extremely loud “whoop”. We both stopped and looked at each other and asked “what was that?”. It came from the ground and sounded like it was about 20 yards away. I felt it as much as I heard it.It felt like it vibrated my chest.

I started scanning with my flashlight and saw the deer dead about 15 yards ahead. My son was really scared at this point. I acted like it was no big deal to keep him calm, but I was pretty freaked out. I felt like we needed to get out of there. We grabbed the deer and got it back out to the field. It felt like we were being followed, but we never heard or saw anything else.

We had to go get my truck, so we left the deer in the field. I fully expected that deer to be gone when we got back, but it was still there. The whole time we were getting it in the truck, it felt like we were being watched from the woods. Just typing this is giving me goose bumps. I think whatever it was was walking up on the deer from the other direction and we got there at the same time. The whoop reminded me of monkeys at the zoo, but deeper and louder. I’ve been hunting for 40 years and I know the sounds animals in this area make. I don’t know what made that sound.

I’ve also seen ghost lights twice on this same property right before daylight. I thought it was trespassers with flashlights, but when I looked at it though binoculars, the light was just by itself floating through the trees. Both times it was bluish white and it was “muted” and slowly dimmed and brightened as it went through the woods. Looked to be about as big as a softball. I was about 200 yards away from it both times. I didn’t really think the lights and hearing the possible Bigfoot whoop were related. But after hearing many stories of people seeing Sasquatch and weird lights, I thought I would include this as well. The times I saw the lights were in the deer seasons prior to 2013.

This property changed hands a few weeks after we heard the whoop and that was our last season hunting there. I know at least one other person saw the lights while hunting there, but nobody ever mentioned anything else out of the ordinary.

Thanks for letting me share this story. I have also noticed some trees broken 15 feet off the ground in an “x” across 2 different logging roads on another property we’re hunting now right down the road, so I’m keeping my eyes open for other things there.”

What was that?

A listener writes “Just a quick story that happened me and a friend about 20 years ago in my early 20’s which I always attributed to something like a ghost but possibly related to your field (so take it for what it’s worth)…Friend had found a remote lake in Northern Wisconsin here and to be honest it’s pretty rare to hear stories of big foot but plenty of supernatural things as far as spirits are concerned being next to an Indian reservation and supposedly having part of our town being built over Indian burial grounds.

To sum it up this lake he found which was only accessible through about a mile walk into the middle of the remote woods on a horse trail was stalked with nice sized largemouth bass, he stumbled on the lake by looking at a topo map and hiked in there alone with his rod one day to see if there was anything in this small one acre lake as others in the area were stocked with trout. Low and behold he finds it after a several minute walk and a small aluminum boat was already there in the weeds with oars under it. He didn’t use the boat but made a few casts from shore and was surprised to catch a few nice bass right away and then he left. The following week he tells me about the lake and we made plans that weekend to get that boat in the water and check it out further to see if any real dandys were in it as it was really swampy and mucky around the outer edges with weeds and almost impossible to fish from standing on shore without snagging your bait. The lake was kind of in a hole like a stadium and very mossy around it with half rotted trees.

We pull up to the horse trail to start our walk in and we notice about a five foot tall cross in the thick woods where we parked that he didn’t notice before as it was in a thick tangle of brush about 10-20yards off the road opposite where the horse trail started…we walk up to the cross and check it out and on it is a picture of a guy proudly kneeling on the seat of a new snowmobile with his name and date “Don” something, my buddy sees the photo and we assume the guy went off the dirt road on that snowmobile and died near there because he hit a tree…then my friend makes a wisecrack “just had to get the 800cc didn’t you Donnie” then chuckles.

I tell him man that’s not right to be talking about the dead like that and the we decide it time to get to the lake as there was only about 2 hrs of daylight left. About 10-15 minutes later down the small horse trail we get to the lake, find the boat (which had a couple slow leaks and a half rotten oar) and started to catch tons of decent bass in the 2lb range, beautiful weather with no wind at all especially being surrounded with thick trees in this amphitheater type situation.

Just as the light began to lower we discussed leaving as we didn’t have a flashlight and about a 15 minute walk to get back. All of a sudden one of these good sized maybe 12 inch diameter trees (possibly half rotten) at the top of the ridge out of view comes crashing down off to the west as we were in the middle of the lake, it kind of startled us for a second. About 5 seconds later to our South another tree crashes loudly and we look at each other surprised…5 more seconds and a third tree comes down to our east, same distance away as the first two. We look at each other like WTF?

We got spooked and he starts a swift row back to where the boat was hiding in the weeds, and by the time we made it the 150yrds to shore I would say 6-8 of these large trees had crashed, you could hear the wood popping as they were going over and even more noise as they demolished the branches of other nearby trees on their way down. We basically did the awkward run/walk back down the horse trail in near darkness to the vehicle and the direction of where the cross is…halfway back in the middle of the horse trail this eerie glow appeared about 150 yards ahead of us and we stopped cold….”WTF is that?” we say, and I say maybe it’s the last bit of light shining through the trees and onto the trail, but the sun was already gone and this thing had the shape of something standing on its own in one place…we had no choice but to keep moving toward it to the vehicle as it was still less frightening than being around all the falling trees behind us.

As we continue to speed walk in the direction of the glow it fades away the closer we get. “I told you shouldn’t have spoken about the guy that died like that!” I say. We threw the rods and tackle boxes in his ride and get out quick down the dirt road and never looked back…that was 20 years ago and still makes me wonder to this day what had really happened….we never went back there or even within 10 miles of there again…our friendship faded since then and we only have spoken about it to each other since with the same unanswered questions. I’ve spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in the woods hunting, fishing and camping and in all that time maybe heard one or two at the most trees ever fall over and that was due to wind…it would be almost impossible to ever hear that many large trees in every surrounding area of you (minus your way back) to fall in that short of a time….I will probably never know why they fell or how that person ever died in the area of where the cross was put up but it does make me wonder…”

Plenty of woods in northern wisconsin for a Bigfoot to hide out in without seeing civilization for years…I have spent many hunting seasons in the northern woods of wisconsin and I have see and herd things that I can’t explain and that have sent me into a awkward run/ walk back to my truck.
With all the sightings of b.f. and dog men in wisconsin I would like to see Wes try and have a Wisconsin/Michigan episode could end up uncovering a lot of fresh new unheard sightings…just a thought:-)
