What is that making those sounds?

A listener writes “My encounter took place nov of 2015. I am an avid hunter and trapper. My location was (Removed) of Massachusetts. I’ve only seen one other hunter on a trail cam where I trap and I’ve been trapping there for about 4yrs.

The only way to get to the area I trap is by driving down a dirt road and parking and then walking into woods. If there is ever anyone else in the area you would know because you would see a car parked on the dirt road .The day before my encounter I was a little shaken up by what sounded like bipedal footsteps coming from behind me while I was on all fours reaching inside of my trap putting bait in it. I quickly jumped to my feet and looked around but didn’t see anything or hear anymore footsteps. So I quickly finished baiting the trap and left.

The following day while in route to that trap was when the realization of Sasquatch really 100% became engraved in my brain. It was starting to get dark and I was checking my traps. My encounter area was about a fifteen minute walk in the woods. There is no walking trails or vehicle trails in the woods where my traps are located. The area I was in had a lot of tree structures etc.. I was walking through the woods while on a game trail that was heavily wooded to my right and had a small brook located to my left. The forest was completely silent.

I got to a point where the woods open up a little bit when out of nowhere I heard a very loud tree knock. It sounded like it was approximately 30 yards from where I was walking. I stopped in my tracks and stood behind a large tree. I peeked around it towards the direction of the knock but couldn’t see anything but large and small pine trees. There wasn’t much visibility due to all the trees and the dark forest night approaching.

After about a minute of standing behind the tree I decided to do my own knock with a tree branch that I picked up from the forest floor. A little hesitant I hit the tree with the branch. Not even 5 seconds later I received a loud knock response. This time the knock sounded extremely close (maybe ten to fifteen feet away). I looked in the direction of the knock but all I could see was thick pines again.

Then about ten seconds after the 2nd loud knock I heard a weird almost exotic sounding whistle. Then maybe three seconds after that I heard a growl that traveled through me . All the hairs on my neck and arms went up. Originally I had wanted to see what was making these knocks but after the growl I began to retreat. I quickly skipped across the brook trying to separate myself from whatever this was that was letting me know it meant business. I then swiftly walked fast through the woods looking back the whole time until I got to the dirt road that I was parked on. I then jumped in my car and drove down the street towards another trap that I had set up.

After I checked my other trap I decided to call my wife and tell her about what happened. While I had her on speaker phone I decided to drive back to the location that my encounter took place. I pulled up to the woods entrance location with my wife on speakerphone and said I’m going to do a call. Now at this time it was completely dark and I was sitting in my car while my car was running. I then let out a loud who , who ,who sound (the best I could do to imitate a chimp). To my surprise my chimp sound received a quick response of another loud tree knock that had to be no more than twenty to thirty feet away. It was so dark I couldn’t see five feet out my drivers side window.

The second I heard the knock I quickly shifted my car into drive and quickly drove away. I definitely felt a little safer being in my car than I did earlier when I was in the woods. I also had another creepy encounter or whatever you would call it in September of 2015 when I was camping in prince William state forest in Virginia. Me and my wife and kids were on our way back to Massachusetts after driving to Disney world. We decided to camp a night because it was cheaper than staying at a hotel. We didn’t have any camping gear but figured it wouldn’t be a problem since the kids could sleep in the SUV . Me and my wife slept on a tarp w a blanket in front of the fire.

The campground was located 4 miles into the deep woods. There was only one other tent that I saw at the campgrounds. I think because it was September and the days were no longer summer like. Anyways I remember waking up to my wife around 2am saying she had to use the rest room. As we were walking to the bathroom we could hear lots of owl sounds. The sounds then turned to coyotes howling. Then they turned to what sounded like hyenas. My wife began to get worried and said “what is that making those sounds?” I said doesn’t sound like any native North American animals that I’ve ever heard.

Then the sounds changed again into what sounded like monkeys or chimpanzees going absolutely crazy. My wife was horrified. She said she was scared and wanted to sleep in the car. I convinced her to sleep in my arms by the fire. It was fascinating to me but at the same time the sounds weren’t as close to me as they were in my other encounter that I’d experience a few mos later. I have some pics I can send you of the tree structures from the area of my encounter.”

I have had owls respond to my calls (Owl calls) and with a number of them coming in close making what sounds like a group of monkeys. I work in my garden late at night and have fun conversing with owls, coyotes and whatever else I can mimic. When one of the times my wife says “what the hell is going on out there? That sounds like a jungle out there and you are playing that sound, knock it off before you freak out the neighbors!” Was pretty freaky but was owls and they were going nuts, they would stop and I could rile them back up and the young ones sound so funny they had me cracking up. I was so enthralled I didn’t think to record till it was ending but I’ll see if I can find it.
