I think this is coyotes. They are known to make odd sounds like this. I think they were responding to the call. It is a great catch though.
A listener writes “Hi Wes, I’ve been listening to your show since you began and love it. My friend’s husband was elk hunting yesterday morning in the Uinta mountains, near Vernal, Utah. Just wanted your opinion if you think this was coyotes only? He doesn’t believe in Sasquatch, but my friend and I do. We thought it was interesting.”

I have watched a ‘yote make a very similar sound in AZ. Thanks for catching this and sharing. I think the more we hear this kind of audio, the more we will be able to recognize when its something else.

I live in rural central Arizona. These are coyotes without a doubt.

Aye. Coyotes.

Very definitely canine. They can fake several animals, but it is usually off a bit.

While I agree that the sounds are most likely coyotes I’d like to see more video of that area to see if those trees are just blown down or are there tree structures in that area. In that little bit of video it looks you can see a glimpse of a big lean and some boxes on the ground.?

Have lived around coyotes for 35 years. That was definitely coyotes. Ending with an elk call. (If decoy elk call it’s a darn good one).
Jeff M
Clearly coyotes responding to their elk call.

We have coyotes living across the street from us and behind us. I hear this most every night, especially when a police siren goes by.
I always keep an eye out in my yard because I have seen them during the day.
Garry M
100 % Coyotes. I have called them in with a varmint call many times and sold the hides.
Been hearing that same sound for over 50 years almost every night up here in Alberta.
James (Waylon) Johnson
