Utah Mountain Lion Encounter

Utah Video writes “Kyle Burgess was on a run about 2 miles up Slate Canyon on Saturday evening and saw four small animals scampering around on the trail ahead, he didn’t realize what they were at first.

Thinking they were bobcats (it wouldn’t be the first time he’d seen those), Burgess pulled out his phone and started recording. Seconds later, when their mother came into view, it dawned on him that he was in big trouble.

They were mountain lion cubs. And their mother was going to protect them at all costs.

The instant the full-grown mountain lion mother charged him, Burgess’s adrenaline fired up. He let out a stream of profanities while he backed away. The cougar dove into the trees along the side of the trail, as if to flank him.

She reappeared on the trail. Her eyes locked on him, and she followed him as he retreated backward.

What came next was the longest six minutes of Burgess’ life.”

I’m surprised he didn’t start throwing rocks earlier in the beginning, I give him a lot of credit because I don’t think I could’ve held out as long as he did. Glad he got away and he’s safe. ( Next time, before you decide to go out for a jog, pack that bear spray or better yet a gun, better to be safe than sorry!)

That wasn’t just about the babies, though, she followed him too far for that. They were way far from her, unprotected, and the “threat” was retreating. She was no longer defending, but wanted to take that hiker. I’m so glad he was OK! Bet it’s the last time he goes out without a gun.

That was really terrifying, thanks for letting us experience this with you. I thought you would never throw rocks but maybe you didn’t want to bend down. Glad it turned out well.

I would have picked up a few rocks as I backed out. Might as well have a weapon to bash its head in, if the cougar is going to get you might as well go together. This generation wants to film it…haha
