This looks fan-freakin-tastic. I always wondered if this tale had some truth to it. From what I understand, a civil war officer even saw this thing and had his men fire a cannon at it.

Last night on Josh Gate’s spin off Expedition X they found a new to me Jersey Devil/ Mothman type creature in Van Meter, Iowa know as the Van Meter Monster. Took place for a small period of time in Van Meter, Iowa in 1903. Townspeople shot at it with no effect. This had been a coal mining area and they witnessed this creature going into an abandoned mine. and promptly buried the entrance. Recently it has been seen again. One couple witnessed it outside of Iowa City. The lady said it was at least 7 foot tall with bat like wings and a beaked face. She has worked in biology with a zoo for years and stated this was unlike anything she ever witnessed. Of course at the end Josh tended to dismiss everything as mid identification. I prefer Dr. Anna Nekaris thesis that when local populations are seeing something, you had best pay attention to them.
