The creature ran off still standing upright

A listener writes “Hey Wes, Thank you for your time, I currently live in a little back water town known as Centre, AL, just to give you an idea of location, Montgomery, AL is about 3 hours south, & Atlanta, GA is about 2 hours east.

My grandfather is deceased now, has been for about 20 years now. I’m 38 & I’m pretty sure I was 18 or 19 when he died. My grandfather wasn’t the type of guy that made up stories or told tales just to get a laugh from the grandkids. He was very, “country” if that makes sense. He always wore overalls, a net hat like a trucker hat, & almost always had a 6 pack of Natural light in the fridge. He was always hunting, fishing or doing something outdoors.

I dont remember specifically the date or the day, I’m thinking it was around 1992 or 93, but my cousins & my grandfather we’re getting ready to go raccoon hunting one night when he started telling us about an encounter he & his buddies had years back while they were raccoon hunting somewhere on the Appalachian mountains.

He told us they had been hunting for a while & that they had bagged a few coons & we’re gonna let the dogs tree a few more before they called it a night. He went on to say that typically the dogs would sniff around from tree to tree & when they got a scent they would signal & take off after the critter. On this particular chase he said they ran after the dogs like usual only this time they heard the dogs fighting with something on the trail, he said they kept hearing what they thought was a wild hog fighting with the dogs. It wasn’t until they caught up with the dogs that they could partially see what it actually was. They didn’t have fancy led flashlights like we do now, all they had were old Coleman style lanterns. He said the creature was standing up right swatting the dogs away as they would try to get close. From what he could see, he claimed it wasn’t a bear, he said it was too big to be a black bear.

One of his hunting companions fired a shot at the creature & the sound was enough to snap the dogs out of their frenzy & the creature ran off still standing upright. He never gave us anymore detail other than it was standing up, hairy, maybe black or brown, & bigger than a typical black bear.

I wish I had more details & had exact dates. I’m sure it could’ve been a bear & amidst all the chaos & adrenaline they could’ve been mistaken, but then again we’re talking about country boys that grew up in the woods.

Thanks again Wes, I love the show, we look forward to it every Sunday night, keep up the good work.”
