Survivorman | Temagami Bug Season

Les writes “After all his years of wilderness survival around the globe, the forests of Ontario’s Temagami still rank as some of the most difficult, harrowing and challenging survival experiences Les has ever faced.

Breathtakingly beautiful, Temagami’s old growth pine forests and refreshing blue lakes, bountiful with fish and wildlife, are sure to test Les’s survival skills yet again. Les returns to the oldest mountain ranges in North America to survive with no food, no water, no shelter, no safety and no camera crew. He survives eating wild edibles, hunting for food, making a fire and building a shelter. Key challenges are the incessant sting of mosquitos, blackflies and deerflies, as well as staying ever vigilant for moose, wolves, bears and other territorial wildlife.”

Right? We went up Hwy 20 to Baker Lake & it is breathtakingly beautiful too, but the mosquitos were fierce. Only a handful of people were there. Later we learned it’s actually called mosquito lake. Go figure. I had no idea mosquitos were so plentiful in Washington State. I agree with the comment above, mosquito netting would be a must.

I went to summer camp in Temagami when I was 10. One night, one of my tent mates decided he needed more room and rolled me out. The next day, someone counted at least 120 mosquito bites on my back that weren’t there the day before. Definitely a character-building experience on those lakes.
