SC EP:66 Giants in America

Brad Lockwood is an author of 9 books, including “On Giants: Mounds, Monsters, Myth Man — Or, why we want to be small.”

Brad writes us “This is my lifelong study of early Native American mounds, who built them, and the supposed big bones unearthed. A bit of an expert on the subject, I do find intriguing similarities with your infamous beast”

Tonight we will discuss burial mounds, giants and Sasquatch. Brad is going to share his personal encounter with us as well.

Thanks Wes, and Will for a good show. Your guest Brad sure liked to present speculation as fact though. Hard to take somebody seriously when they do that for half the interview. You were very gracious to him, a hard thing to do. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work!

Great Show Tonight Wes and Will. I wasn’t thrilled with the title thinking talking about giants. I was fascinated from start to finish and was bummed when I realized it was time for the show to be over. I defiantly want to download his book. Thanks guys, love the new format!! Merry Christmas!!

I appreciate the science and insight that are presented on SQ. I don’t always agree with the guests but am so happy there is a place where the Bigfoot phenomena are discussed in such a rational way. Shows like (not) Finding Bigfoot and organizations like the BFRO make the subject look ridiculous. Thats why I have such respect for Mr Jevning and Wes and Woody and Shannon. I really enjoyed tonights show.

Great show everyone! At first, I was thinking, “This guy is an apologist for the gov’t and the Smithsonian.” I have been sort of following Jim Vieira who is the main guy on the Lost Giants show on the History channel who is looking for the giants with the double rows of teeth. But I thought no lets give this guy his chance with an open mind. Slowly, a lot of what he was saying began to make sense. Then when he said that he thought that at least some of the Bigfoot were Homo heidelbergensis he had me, because that has been my pet theory for 5-6 years now and is what got me kicked off of the BFRO forum because it didn’t jive with $maker’s theories. I am still leery of the Smithsonian and the government as I think there is still a lot of funny business that has been going on for a long time with Bigfoot/Sasquatch and Giants and the manipulation of historical fact to suit an unknown agenda. But, it is obvious that this Lockwood guy has done a lot of thinking and studying in this area and I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

      Very well could be .
The comment above your I would also like to address, I Also Like Jim Vieira , I hope it doesn’t end up like Finding Bigfoot. The Constant chase . He called these People that lived here & were responsible for the Stone Chambers of New England – Maritime Archaic People . Mr. Lockwood doesn’t mention Copper Armor ? I don’t know . I have read accounts of People finding these things Recorded in the Town Registry’s, when I was much younger . ( My Mothers a Librarian ) And Him to dismiss the double rows of teeth ……. ? I would think , People who were there handling these Skeletons would Know . I am sure it wasn’t 3 guy’s Laughing amongst each other , Standing over the Town Archives saying ” OH WATCH THIS ! This will really get em !! We will say they had double rows of Teeth & 6 Fingers & Toes!” I don’t know … didn’t People in the past , that found these Skeletons , bring them to Doctors to Verify ?

    • Jay Carlsen

I am Sorry , I am not “Picking” on ya. You only bring up a Point that that I have thought Long on . Are there not Many of the First Nation People who say they had to Fight Giants in the Past ? I have gotten myself in a little trouble over this commenting on the YouTube. So I have to Admit …. I Am A Racist: A Human Racist. If you are Not Human – I do not care to associate with you . ( Not trying to steal any ones claim to the Land – Do we our self’s Belong to the Land ? Were does Everyone end up after they are Through Here ? 6 feet Under the Land .)( Or Ash )
I Have read , about a Find in Bradford Pa , Back in the 1800’s some time , like 7 skeletons were found Sitting on a Ledge. Above the Flood Plain of the Allegheny River , Clad in Copper Armor , all had Copper Swords , Blond or Red Hair & Long Beards . All were very Large 8 – 14 foot tall . The Tallest wore a Copper Crown . And One had Horns growing out of the Forehead ….. (?)
Fritz Zimmerman pointed out in a video I seen , That these Giants were not Freaks of Nature , that only happened here & there through out the Population. But were a Race unto them self’s . Human Skull’s have a Cleft in the center of there Chin , on the Lower Mandible . But These Giant People have a cleft that is moved over ….. Like Underneath the Eye Tooth . ( He called it something ? The George Formin ? or something ?)
The Norse Myths are old , Very Old . Could it be Possible , that the America’s are in Fact Jotunheim, The Land Of the Giants ? That was Located across a River ( Ocean ?) from Midgard ?
And were Not these Nephilim ( sorry – my spell check must be smoking Pot again ) Fallen Angels , or Offspring of the Fallen Angels ( wouldn’t that make us at Odds w/ them ?) didn’t they posses Hiden Knowledge ? teaching Women of Potions & Spells ? didn’t they Teach man of Weapons & War ? Yes , they were cannibals. But i kind of get the Picture that they were not Primitive , Feral People , with Stone Age Technology . Are they responsible for these Megalithic Stone Chambers found across New England?
that were Aligned with the Winter Equinox. Were These a Global People ?

      • Brad L

Armor and swords made of copper? Wow that would be an easy fight, even with simple stone weapons. Copper was widely mined in Michigan for several thousand years, many native copper pieces of artwork have been uncovered in mounds, but to use one of the softer metals for any sort of armor or weapons seems silly. Kind of like having 2 rows of teeth…
I grew-up 30 mins from Bradford and never heard this tale – even when deeply digging into the history of Giants in my area and America. Post a link, please. Too many of these miraculous and giant discoveries have a single documenting and no more. Or they “disappeared” — I want to believe but somebody has to have proof.
I must add that Bradford and NW PA is a hotspot for unusual sightings, many well-documented recently.

        • Jay Carlsen

Jim Vieira covers a lot of Material as This . I do not recall where I read that … What the Title of the Book was . ( Yes – I’m old ) But a lot of these Finds have Copper associated w/ them . I have worked with Men from Bradford pa . & none of them heard of it either . ( But that does not mean I did not Read it .) I’m just some Shmuck trying to Piece it Together . The Cleft in the Chin deal , I got from Fritz Zimmerman , he did a clip on YouTube . I apologize, I do not know how to post a Link . & I am to Proud to ask my Daughter to show me How .( She is grounded from the Computer until New Years )
Jim Vieira – Ancient stone chambers of the New England
Fritz Zimmerman – What ever comes up on him .
Sorry , I have worked the Oil Field since 1992 – cant type . Calculator Illiterate ……

  5. Jay Carlsen

What ? What if these Sasquatch , Are the Neanderthal ? They never found a Mummified Neanderthal . They do not Know if it was covered with hair or not. Who’s Razor was it ? Oakum? How much would it take , to say they are One & the same ? different types of Sasquatch – different types of Cave Men ……
& How many have been Killed , but yet the Government covers it up. Would it even Matter if you dragged one into the Front Door of any University? You have to admit the whole Topic isn’t viewed as ” OH HEY ! LOOK ! A NEW KIND OF TEDDY BEAR” But has been brushed off as Fantasy.

  6. Terry g

Sounded like a nice enough guy – I got the impression that he’s more of an enthusiast that reads a lot, listens to a lot of different radio programs, and watches a lot of television – didn’t come across as an expert.

    • margaret h

Totally agree with Terry G. Not an expert but a good talker.
Interesting topic but not why we listen and subscribe. Still, like being in the “room” with Wes, Will and Shannon.. Cheers Guys. Merry Christmas.

  7. Kim L

That was a very entertaining show, thank you so much. Also, very accurate and important advice about being careful where and what you dig up. The amount of trouble you can be in is just mind bending. Even if you just excavated for a “look see” and filled the hole back in, you could be looking at felony charges. Saw it happen to two friends, really scary, said goodbye to my artifact collection I began as a very young boy, that night. The Bible makes reference to races of humans considered giants, I expect there were and are really big human bones around. What I don’t see in the three occurrences in the Bible, of the word Nephilim, is anything I can relate to BF. Now, that is totally my opinion and nothing more. Speculation is both natural and healthy, I’m not saying another opinion is wrong, so please, don’t take offence.

  8. Chris S

It was a great show, very interesting. Were do you go for his free book download? I would not trust the Smithsonian i read stories about them taking a barge loaded with ancient artifacts and dumping them in the ocean.

  9. Steve E

Great show, having not seen any real evidence of Giants (that includes watching ALL of the current Searching for Giants TV show), I have mixed feelings about the subject. What I mean is that, if giant bones are discovered next to a riverbed, in a cave, in a mound or under a pile of rock and THEY ARE NOT buried with necklaces, rings, jewelry, a spear and/or other possessions… they why couldn’t that be a Sasquatch instead of a giant human?

  10. Patrick G

Guy was nice enough, but the data ran absolutely counter to every other thing I’ve ever read, heard or dug into.
That’s ok, happy to hear the guy out and read his book and see what he has.
However, as someone who grew up with a mound in the middle of the city I grew up in, it doesn’t jive with first hand accounts or local history….AT ALL.
I’ve seen the Smithsonian site survey maps of the Kanawha Valley. Smithsonian barged in and raided the area. There were very many mounds in the valley. Two remain now, but they were excavated and stripped by the Smithsonian. It was systematic. If it ran counter to current science, they carted if off. My area wasn’t an exception…it was the rule and still is, with a nice new legal twist with the First Nation travesty.
It’s that simple. No matter how nice you are to the Smithsonian as an organization, it’s just wishful thinking that you are going to be able to see what they don’t want known. It’s a club, brother…and you ain’t in it.

    • Brad L

Thanks for insights Patrick! I would love to see any publication or link to the excavations of the mounds in your area – please post!

Yes, the Smithsonian gets a (deserved at times) bashing for its early work and, no, I don’t work for them. I know many who do and they are more afraid of budget cuts and having collections returned to Native Americans than hiding bones. What may have happened much earlier to mounds I can’t honestly say; and yes I have heard the same tale of a boatload of big bones being taken out to be dumped in the Atlantic – but only one report-rumor that continually gets copied and pasted on sites. I also heard the account of the “Kossuth Giants” and a huge temple unearthed in Iowa (on a web site) which no one in Kossuth, Iowa has ever seen nor heard of, except online…

Not to dominate this forum but a few things that we simply didn’t have time to cover in the interview: Squier & Davis (a newspaperman and physician) were the first to offer full documentation of mounds in their 1848 work “Ancient Mounds of the Mississippi Valley.” Meanwhile, the Smithsonian didn’t even exist until the 1870s, with a 12-year expedition led by Cyrus Thomas documenting many (but not all) of the mounds in Eastern America. By that time, all of the mounds in my region had already been razed or ransacked — Not by some secretive government organization but by locals looking for treasure and farmers trying to level their fields.

The 28-inch femur bone unearthed from a mound in my area was sent to the NY State Museum, which sadly burned at the turn of the century, along with several very rare artifacts and native copper artworks. Not a huge or giant bone, but something curious. What else is out there and why would anyone want to keep it secret? Sadly, too many conspiracy theories just don’t pass muster. The funniest thing I found was several hoaxers trying to claim the Smithsonian and other official organizations were actually part of their discoveries, when those organizations didn’t even exist at the time nor have any clue that they were being blamed — Or used to give greater credibility.

Google wisely and check “facts” twice!

  11. Kenneth M

Great show. This guest was very interesting urbane and well spolen and well thought out. He wasn’t all about Bigfoot and seemed very credible. I really wished I could find out about Guy Hill I don’t live alll that far from him and want to learn more about this subject.

  12. Patrick G

    @Brad L
Reading my comment now sounds unnecessary harsh.
We are a tough crowd and rowdy at times, but never a rude one. I hope I didn’t read that way. If I did, I apologize.
I know you can’t take a field of study and jam it into 1hr35min. You do the best you can be and it was a great show! Definately count me in for buying your book. We appreciate you coming on. I personally appreciate your openness and interest in our related subject, here. I just grumble when I know that there’s a chance some idea I think I’ve got right may have to go.
I’ll also round up all I’ve got and pass along. Most is WV specific. I’ll look you up. Again, thank you for coming on and sharing. Hope we hear you again soon.
    Pat

This was an incredibly interesting show. The only thing I will take exception with is the guest’s comment that Labrador Retrievers are evolving into smaller, house dogs. That is not factual as Labrador Retrievers are a domestic animal that are bred to a breed standard. If the breed appears to be smaller “these days” – especially in the show ring – it is because good breeders are breeding to a specific “blue print” (called a breed standard). In the field, were such breeding to a standard is less-true, you will see more variation in height and weight – and of course, people who only breed for money pay no attention to such things but any way you slice it, the breed is _not “evolving into a smaller breed.” Sorry for the rant – I can’t comment on BF as I have never seen one – nor have I seen Giants. But as someone deeply vested in purebred dogs I thought I could make this one point. Thank you. Great show.

  14. jackjudah

Overall, very good show. But not all of Brad’s comments were entirely accurate. Homo Heidelbergensis (and yes, that is pronounced with a hard g) is not believed to have been a giant. The only claims of exceptionally tall specimens (meaning between 6-7 ft tall) I’ve ever read about were made by Lee Berger, and based on finds from one dig in South Africa. The GREAT MAJORITY of Heidelbergensis fossils suggest a much smaller average height of around 5ft.

    • Christopher U

The largest number of homo heidelbergensis fossils to date have been found in Spain. by calculating height from the enormous amount of extremity fossils such as femur bones, they were able to extrapolate an average height for homo heidelbergensis At 163 centimeters or so, I think that comes up to about 5 feet 4 inches .

    http://www.sott.net/article/281093-The-truth-about-giant-skeletons-in-American-Indian-mounds-and-the-Smithsonian-cover-up

The Smithsonian did uncover some quite tall skeletons (7 – 8 feet tall) – that is a matter of record – see above. They were not exactly “giants” by our standards, but they were extraordinary for the times.
The Osage Indians of the Ozarks were tall enough to have been called by neighboring tribes “giants,” and the Osage were notoriously warlike and scary.

  16. Brad L

Very cool to see the anove link and, wow, the Smithsonian actually documented giants? Wowza! Sorry some of the conspiracy stuff gets so over the top here…
As for Home Heidelbergenus not being tall: Yes they were. I have seen 5’4 and 5’10 skeletons from Spain to Siberia. Now check Homo Sapiens’ height 200,000 yrs ago. We have all grown, some more than others, and Homo H simply seems the most likely proportional explanation for what people may be seeing. Get a body and let’s find out finally!
You all rule, thanks to SC for letting me be part of your wild world.

  17. Avis B

I would have to disagree with Brad Lockwood… On many things.. but the biggest is that he is looking from a human soft side.. the reason they have been hunted down and killed off is because we were the diner menu.. He has good info but he is not looking at the whole picture.. People like this is dangerous to the human race… Just imagine type 2’s and 3’s running around with heavy breeding.. It would not take long to wipe us out.. and until he has a in your face sighting .. only then he would get it..

  18. Stacy F

This guy is KILLING ME….you’d think someone in his position would know and be able to pronounce the names correctly. It’s not Homo “Neanderthalis,” it’s Homo NeanderthalENsis. It’s not Homo “Heidelberg-JEN-sis”, it’s HeidelberGENsis. Criminy.

  19. Janice P

Leave them alone because they’re evolving into more sophisticated hunting groups? As much as I appreciate your info I don’t think it’s very smart as a species. Also, from what I can tell the sasquarch seem to be notorious for destroying trees and a dead tree does not produce oxygen.
The Kennewick Man skeleton DNA, aged 8,500 years, was found to closely almost match a local tribe.

On one level I do understand why some people feel so strongly about legally being able to gather scientific data. But your focus is not everyone’s focus. Many native tribes receive ‘medicine’ from their dead. It’s a deeply different belief than you have apparently. Sometimes it’s not good for us to always be allowed to be getting what we ‘want’ while standing in the way of others getting what they ‘need’. If you feel that native Indians have an anger component you’re are likely right and that anger does sometimes drive the issue before them.

Bottom line…Do not dig in someone else’s yard or the privilege may be discontinued for all.

  20. Shane M

I really don’t like how this Brett guy discredits the double rows of teeth. Whatever these creatures were, they weren’t humans or even in the family tree! Double rows of teeth is a very unique and very hard to be a mistake. Either they did or did not have this feature and I hate how archeologist discredit everything first. Doing this only dumbs us down and we need to listen and assume the truth in these accounts rather than BS lies. We are a violent species, but we aren’t so dumb we can’t describe what we are seeing. We need to except there were a large number of species alive at one time and everyone of them were banging each other…whether that was by force or not doesn’t matter. We’ve got too think bigger and bigger and bigger! Very frustrating and I hope can sort some of this shit out before I die.

  21. craig d

Took some info from this one and left a lot.
I wonder why they brought guests on in these early episodes? Wil can obviously tell us everything we need to know. The guy is the BF oracle. All hail the Wil!!

  22. craig d

I hope one day Wil is walking thru the timber and hears a voice in his head to come talk with us and he is directed thru a portal and its filled with hungry dogmen. Poetic justice. I’d hate to be so closed minded and pig headed. Just who the hell does he think he is?
I don’t know if I can continue listening to these early episodes. I always hope this is the last one with Wil in it.

  23. Jon S

Brad was lost, hopefully he’s woken up a bit since this interview. He believes in evolution? Talk about looking through a glass darkly. Neanderthals did not exist, all the evidence for them was fraudulent. Yet Brad in his arrogance believes the giants could not have two rows of teeth because…evolution?! Giants were not made by God, they were made by fallen angels mixing with earth women. Read the bible it’s real history. Believe the bible, your soul depends on it. Stop believing the lies of the enemy Brad. I’ll pray for you.

  24. Brian D

Is it possible that before God created man in his image, that there weren’t a few trial runs that survived? I don’t know, just wondering. I do not believe in evolution, the overwhelming evidence of creation is evident in everything. But then you throw in the fallen angels, the knowledge of the tree of good and bad which Adam and Eve were not ready for, the forbidding of partaking from the tree of life, what a mystery. The Nephilam. The Tower of Babel.
    I’m so confused.
I believe in Sasquatch. But I am not a knower.
I am beyond anxious to solve this mystery.
