SC EP:391 Mumbling in the woods

Its going to be a big week, I am not 100% but I am back. I will be welcoming Tony Merkel from the Confessionals Podcast and my Brother Woody to the show. We will be reviewing the documentary Discovering Bigfoot.

I will also be speaking to Steve to the show who had a scary encounter in the Adirondacks of Northern New York. He describes being screamed up and having rocks thrown at him.

I will also be speaking to Sal who is from California. Sal grew up in a concrete jungle and had to move to Oregon temporarily for work. While out for a hike in the woods Sal and his friend heard mumbling in the woods. As they came around the bend in the trail Sal saw two creatures. Sal describes seeing one of the creatures talking/mumbling to another creature. Sal said “They reminded me of hairy cavemen.”

    Saw this documentary.
    Amazingly disappointing, bordering on comical.
I almost felt sorry for him if he hadnr’t wasted 120 min of my life.
I will listen to see what you thought, Wes.

    • Jon K

I have to agree with you FS. I dont knock the witnesses because I want to be part of a supportive environment, but pros are fair game. The part where he was seeing something huge on infrared and then gets.. a tree knocked over on him? Log thrown on him? It was clearly a log next to him that he had set upright and knocked over. I couldn’t watch after that. It just doesnt make sense. Either a huge tree comes crashing down or a huge log comes skidding by. Not a huge log tips over next to him.

    • robert j

I agree , it was terrible , so many inconsistencies no real evidence at all just videos of what could be head puppets on sticks and a video of what could easily be a guy painted black hiding behind a log! And the heat camera footage was terrible could of been anything , it was like a comedy in places shots of Todd running around all clumsy like in his gilly suit , He must of even set those cameras up to catch his clumsy ass jumps and leaps . This doc provides absolutely zero evidence

I’ve been dying to hear your opinion of the Documentary Wes… it was very interesting… I’ve watched it three or four times… that last pic Todd Standing got of the Sasquatch you have pictured has been hard for me to accept until I remembered the people you’ve had on that talked about the one they saw being a very very black color and looking very human & not animal like… this fit with that… can’t wait to hear your observations!

    • Indignico

Does anyone remember right at the height of Todd Standing bashing when everyone was calling him a hoaxer and an inept one at that… mostly accusing him of creating a ludicrous-looking fake Bigfoot mask that looked a lot like a muppet… around then some Indian Tribe released a shot of an old Bigfoot mask that had only recently been re-discovered after having gotten lost in the archives of some presumably well meaning museum of Native American artifacts… annnnnyway, the shocking thing for me at the time upon seeing a shot of that mask was how freakishly muppet-like looked this tribe’s Bigfoot Mask from the 1800’s.

When I saw that I officially changed my stance on Todd Standing and grounded myself for a full month without use of the car and no friends over until the end of the full month! For falling for what in retrospect seemed like an obvious organized take-down of Todd Standing… kind of like the one that almost got Wes way back when he went to Texas and while en route the entire world all at once tried to label Wes as a fraud and liar and at the same time his bigger named (at the time—ha!) co-host behaved in a way virtually guaranteed to mislead anyone who didn’t look directly into the matter themselves. Watching all of that happen was a freaking lesson in how the ptb go about putting a stop to something they want stopped.

Anyway this post was about that mask… anyone know what I’m talking about and have a link to that image they could post here possibly?

      Thanks,
      William Travis Robison

Y’all I just hate when folks see BF pixs or video’s and yell fake. My question to them is who died and made you the “God of Fake or Real”!!
What the heck makes you an expert to say what is or is not real? That’s the question I want answered by all these “Want to Be BF Experts” out there when there is no such thing as an expert on the subject! That’s my rant. I think Todd Standing is telling the truth on this video and that is my opinion. Great job Wes, Woody, and Tony. Thank you so very much on the great shows y’all put out there for us to hear. Y’all so rock the BF world!

    • Stephen W

Well you have to except people have different opinions, than yourself and you or anybody can’t sit in judgement on what their opinions are , you have your opinions and other people have theirs, have a great Christmas and new year

    • Gene P

      Cindy
Some of the people yelling fake could be from the section of the government trying to spread disinformation so as to protect the outing of the Sasquatch species. I for one, believe this small piece of the government that tries to keep the Sasquatch and the public separated, is trying to protect these Sasquatch. Also much of the public and public agencies just aren’t ready to acknowledge and deal with the issue.

  4. Brad C

I bought one of his first CD, got it would not play, sent him email and he sent me another still did not play, so I had a attitude towards him but I thought this was very compelling to a knower for 50 years

  5. Sam T

great show wes. i saw the show Todd made. i was a little disappointed. a few of if not all the pictures just look so fake to me. i want to believe Todd but its hard with such fake looking stuff. does anyone else agree?

    • F S

      Sam:
I agree. For someone with SUPPOSED proof of Sasquatch for a court case, I saw zero absolute evidence.
Disappearing apples, tree breaks, trackways prove nothing.
(The “apples scene” was so ridiculous it boarded on slapstick. Here these things are coming in to take bait, and he’s runnung around, whistling … then he trips over his one light. Oh no! What a shock.)
I saw nothing that could not have been faked.
(The scene with the “huge apha male” made no sense. Why would it be facing away from the camera and not moving at all? Any real primate would face the camera. Plus – aren’t these things supposed to sway back and forth when stressed? It looks like a stuffed bear with it’s back to us.)
In the US, anyone can sue anyone else for anything (look up “frivolous law cases), and I now suspect Canada allows the same.
I’m not gonna hold my breath on this judicial decision.
WE ALL MUST DEMAND BETTER EVIDENCE.
I literally fast forwarded through the BS tree breaks and tracks.
If what he so boldly touts as his amazing abilities is real – I hope he can get MUCH BETTER EVIDENCE in the future.

        • F S

You know, there is an oft ignored, but most essential member of the Sasquatch Community – THE CONSUMER.
Anyone with the slightest business acumen understands the necessity of, and the catering to, the people who spend money.
As long as I pay with my time, advertising-reach, membership fees, and hard-earned dollars for books, videos, and merchandise that SUPPORTS “researchers”, I will have a say – AND I WILL CONTINUE TO DEMAND more than video of a goofball with a mullet running around Canada in a ghillie suit – all from the comfort of my home.
          Merry Christmas

          • Kyle A

Quick question, How do you use a mullet though? Just curious, my dad gave me one for Christmas but I can’t figure out which end is better. Should I swap batteries maybe?

          • Mike X

You have a fncking ton to say son. You’re worth reading over… You and dislecix “people pros”. In the ECONOMY im sure chase could probably due without you $7.00/per month or your t-shirt buy. You’re a fucking joke. i have something for you on my page too. You dont know jack sh!t. I get tired of reading all your negetive bs. And thats what it is – total BS.

      • Martin Z

Sorry if I’m too late and you don’t read this. I’m on your side even though I don’t agree on everything you say. As a consumer you have every right to complain. This is a pay site, therefore your comments are needed weather they’re good or bad. People always expect for everyone else to get on board the SC Train and think the same.

        • F S

          Martin:
Kind words. Thanks for the support.
(I think someone woke up on the wrong side of the banjo today when they went to go brush their tooth.)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  6. devon c

Sam T – I do agree with you. I absolutely respect anyone who wants to believe his stuff is real, but can’t buy into his claims, myself. His earlier ‘evidence’ looks like theatrical pros. There are also some reasonable arguments made against him, and here are links to a couple of them. There are more to be sure, but these are two that I can quickly find.
    http://woodape.org/index.php/news/news/48-news/241
    https://boingboing.net/2014/12/12/is-blinky-the-bigfoot-really-t.html

I’d love nothing more than to think that the very last few frames he shows in his new project is that of a charcoal faced hominid, but if you add it to the body of work that lacks credibility, I am very skeptical that it too, is not what it is presented as. I want to believe him, but I just can’t at this point. I wish he had made his film without adding the photos he presented to everyone years ago. The footprints, the structures and the last short of the ‘peering face’ would have been more compelling without those debunked shots included in the film. This could have been an opportunity to redeem his reputation, but he doubled down.

I know there are those who do not feel the same way as I. So be it.

I’m glad I saw the documentary though. I’m always interested in learning from peoples experiences. Most of the guests in Wes’ episodes are far and away more credible with their verbal descriptions than Todd is with those questionable ‘pictures’. I love this website and look forward to hearing about the life-changing encounters with these archaic hominids (if that is what they are).

  7. Jason T

I’ve watched the documentary 3 times in the last few week. I really enjoyed it. I’ve never seen a Sasquatch face that close. Or at all. Except for Patty. Compared to Patty at that distance and film clarity I’d say looks good to me. Peacefully powerful is how it looked to me. Meaning I’m content now but I could mop you up if need be. If that makes sense?

If I were Todd Standing I would RUSH to pass a polygraph test to prove I am telling the truth. Same for Bob Gimlin. For the life of me I can’t figure out what they’re waiting for. There is very little doubt that sasquatch exists, but it’s no reason to believe anyone concerning controversial cases. The fact that they sound nice shouldn’t be enough for a skeptical person. Wes, if you have the opportunity to talk to them why not ask them if they would be willing to pass a test, I don’t see why it would be taken as an insult. In fact if I were them I would just say yeaah I understand that people are skeptical because the case is controversial and I’m willing to pass the test.

    • Pete M

Nicholas, “passing” a polygraph is not proof of anything, if it was, polygraph results would be admissible as “evidence” in court and they are not admissible. Pathological liars and nut jobs are just some of the types of people that can easily pass a polygraph test, neither of which describes Bob Gimlin. By this point you either believe Bob Gimlin or you don’t, if I were him I wouldn’t take a polygraph, not because I’m lying, but because I don’t have to prove anything to anyone.

I watched Discovering Bigfoot and just find it odd that Todd Standing Has done size comparisons on inanimate bigfoot or ones that haven’t been caught on camera, but when come to video of something looking alive and these supposed creatures are blinking there isn’t any going back to the same location to prove that next to said log that the head or face is any bigger than a humans. Todd Standing is probably a great guy but I personally think he’s just a great artist who’s bored with everyday life, looking for some excitement and trying to leave behind something for us to ponder long after he’s gone, just like the P.G. film. I’m not a skeptic on the subject in general, just not buying into Discovering Bigfoot. Makes me feel sad if Todd Standing has been scheming this plan for years and is duping poor old Mr. Bindernagle. I’d hate for the old fuzzy fella to be discredited someday by a guy that only seeks attention for himself.
    Love your show Wes! Thanks

  10. Craig D

Hey I saw Standing’s documentary and wanted to point out the obvious. In the last scene where he shows us the “charcoal faced hominid” the film is cutting back and forth between medium shot: him on the ground/satnding up to: the shot “through the lens” of his 50plus telephoto. It even shows him changing his battery as he narrates it.

He should state that this is a recreation, but the shot of the face is original. I think this is an amazing video. If it’s authentic, it’s probably the best we have of this close? (Not sure of the other ewok images: they seem to puppet like for me).

    thanks

  11. Marc C

Nicolas B., A lie detector test is like loosing an arrow at a deer. One of three things will happen , and two of them are bad. In the case of the arrow shot, it will result in a clean kill, a bad wound, or a clean miss. In the case of a lie detector “test”, your results will either indicate “probably truthful”, “probably not truthful”, or undecisive. Some folks can pass the “test” dishonestly, while some honest folks get so nervous it appears that they are dishonest! Can you tell that I do not believe in the accuracy of “lie dector tests”? Blessings, and a very merry CHRISTmas to All!

  12. Mike X

    Wes,
I watched the movie as soon as you brought ot up. It was really great and there’s no way he could have produced all that for under $2mm. But he had it all and he’s not getting famous from that film. I listened to your transitiom of the film and right on. Have to say F.S. has a little of a bad attitide but to everyone, thier opinion is due. We fought for it!

  13. Gary C

Just watched the doc after listening to this episode, I just cannot buy the video footage of the Bigfoot’s, I just watched a few videos of gorillas to see how often they blink, probably the same as humans, whilst Todd’s examples hardly blink if at all.
I still think as I did a few years ago when you first posted the clips, I believe Todd has had an experience but he is so desperate to have more and will find that in everything.
I agree that this guy is out there in the field and he is one of few people that do this and deserves credit for trying but Matt Moneymakers words still ring in my ears from when he was on finding Bigfoot, he explained Todd had a reputation in the community for not do genuine evidence.

One thing I’d like to know is why Wes and Co have changed their minds on Todd?

Also I’d love to hear Bob Garrets take on those close ups of Bigfoot.

Thanks to Todd for putting a doc together and well done for getting it on Netflix.

Merry Christmas to all from the U.K.

  14. John A

Wes and Co were overly hard on Standing back when. But that doesn’t mean he should be immune to criticism. And apologizing for past bad behavior doesn’t mean you can’t criticize him now.
I think Wes and the others made some good positive points. But there were a lot of negatives that weren’t mentioned, presumably in the name of authenticating their penitence. Balance is always the key.

  15. Dovie D

I live in Dallas Oregon 15 minutes west of Salem toward the Oregon coast. I’m curious if your guest was walking Silverfalls out of Salem Oregon? I have walked those trails to the beautiful falls several times. As for the video my husband and I plan to watch it. I agree Wes. Todd has worked hard and I believe him. I’ve seen the trailer and pictures and I am very impressed with what I have seen. I appreciate your honesty and assessment. Thank you

  16. John N

I don’t think that it is he puts out fake stuff. I think it is his attitude of being so haughty and pushy in the documentary. I find it off putting due to that. I thought the documentary was very informative, and IF I KNEW THAT BIGFOOT WAS IN THE WOODS I WOULD PROBABLY SHOVE IT IN PEOPLES FACES AS WELL. I respect the guy and if he puts out more documentaries and information about sasquatch more power to him because I love it. Secondly this is an aside, can you put the Bob Gymlan guy from YT on your broadcast. Would love for you guys to chat. Very knowledgeable!

  17. Nathan E

Merry Squatchmas, Wes and Woody! Thanks for your review. I will see if I can find the show on Amazon Video. Sal’s encounter was pretty good too. He had the A-1 level encounter without even asking, some people get all the luck….

  18. Aaron W

I would tend to agree with the majority here on the blog, VERY DISAPPOINTED!…When Dr. Bendernagel & Dr. Meldrum where with Todd it’s like he was fishing for them to “say” the right things, or force them to agree with him. I believe Todd has seen things out there, but with this documentary he’s just trying soooo hard to convince everyone about these creatures that it’s coming out as comical almost. Just because 2 PHD Dr’s are with you, and in your documentary, doesn’t mean it gets the stamp of approval from the whole world.

  19. Sarah J T

    Hi Wes,
As ever, thank you so much for all of your hard work. I love this show so much. I appreciate your interviewing skills — you are so respectful of your guests and they all seem so relieved(?) and grateful for an opportunity to share their experience. I’ve never had an encounter, but I’m definitely a believer. Two things I’m curious about – perhaps other members can opine:
First, the black/grey faced creature at the end of the Discovering Bigfoot documentary (scared the hell out of me) — is that similar to what you and your brother saw? Also, did you notice that strange growth on its head – as you look at it, on the left side well above where an ear might typically be located? or perhaps it was just part of the tree stump? Second, it seems to me that these creatures operate off of a sort of naturalistic “blue tooth” – from all the accounts of repeat sightings, it seems like people are somehow “connected” to these creatures once they encounter them (much the way my iPhone connects with the different Bluetooth speakers in my house/car). Seamlessly. Do you think that’s possible (telepathically or something)?

  20. Karen H

Loved the show! Also watched the documentary. I do agree with Wes & Woody. If it’s fake, Todd would be pretty wealthy and saught after in Hollywood. I love his passion and his relentless, tireless, pursuit to help others know these creatures do exist. Not pushing or forcing. More of a firm military way of informing edged by never ending excitement. Even if just 1 pic or video is real, then that’s still amazing.

  21. Pete M

Sal, no seis pendejo mijo, que haces en los montes? Te va a comer un monstro! Lol, stay in the concrete jungle brother, at least there if you have to shoot at a threat, you might be effective…

  22. NHSquatcher

Those videos of the two Sasquatch faces in the trees are completely fake snd were people in makeup and suits. They even look like Todd himself dressed as Sasquatch. Good make up job but obviously very fake. No animals eyes look like that so completely round or have perfect little noses. Gah!!!!!!

  23. randolph w

I was well watched Todd Standing’s documentary, and I was surprised and entertained by the production. His excitement, and encouragement of the guest researchers was very impassioned. The evidence was evaluated as per ” Science’s rules”…..I would like to discuss that in his film evidence there seems to be four seprate species, or races of Sasquatch. Look at each piece of video or pictoral evidence, and each are clearly on a separate race of said creature. I’m one of those ” need the body” kind of guys…..but if these sasquatch’s are the real deal, then Alberta has one hell of a Sasquatch melting pot as it were. What do you guys think?

  24. Kyle A

Wes, this old kid Wayne was napping, so Jaffrey put honeysuckle on his bare knee cap and it attracted almost like 70 ants and his knee looked like an ant hill. Gosh we were laughing so hard milk shot out of our nostrils but the best part is we weren’t even drinking milk!

  25. robert j

The documentary provided no evidence what so ever ! Just a jumbled collection of crappy footage of Todd diving about in the most awkward manor , parts of it reminded me of the film napoleon dynamite when his uncle sets up his own camera to film him throwing the foot ball , it was like this just Todd filming himself tripping over brush

  26. Rich A

Hey guys I would have loved to hear you guys comment on the pic that was posted here on this episode. That looks like new information to me and I’m not sure what to think I would have loved to hear what you guys had to say about it.

  27. Steven M

Wes – I don’t know what you and Woody said about Todd Stanley that you felt you needed to apologize. However, I can’t believe this video convinced you and Woody that this guy is credible. I watched Discovering Bigfood bas d on you and Woody’s review. Sorry, but I was incredibly disappointed.

After reading the two sources listed below, I’m convinced he’s a fraud:

We just finished watching Todd Standings documentary. We don’t have Netflix so I search our cable tv network and found it under ROGERS COMMUNICATIONS on demand Pay per view menu. We are located in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. We were in awe of the videos of the different Sasquatch facial characteristics. Fainting!
We were impressed with both West & Woody’s heartfelt apologetic words of being so hard on Todd in the past. It makes you both better men by doing this. I can’t stand the negative comments about the documentary. We truly believe that both Dr’s that appeared in the film would not hAve allowed the documentary to be published if there was even an remote chance that it was all fake.
Merry Christmas West & Woody. We wish you Wes continued success with your WONDERFUL SHOW. We have been with you from the very first few episodes and continue to be excited about each new episode you publish.
    Thank you,
    Rick & Jill

I think the only part of the documentary that i wasn’t already familiar with was the black faced one at the end. That one looked very different than the previous ones and more like a gorilla than a puppet. Maybe the variation within the species is way greater than we know. It could be the “types” are total crap made up by armchair researchers to explain abnormally wide species variation. Personally that type 1-4 stuff always seemed a bit silly. We know there are four types but can’t agree on anything else? Seems presumptuous. All in all, I enjoyed the documentary but can see why he has problems….. he needs a publicist.

  30. Taylor W

Anyone thinking Todd Standing is Hoaxing. Has never seen a Sasquatch. Two of those in the flim, look just like some I have seen. Once again armchair (researchers ) HA. Attacking someone who is doing it. Bunch of losers.

    • Amy H

Yeah I agree Taylor. Bunch of arm chair quarterbacks around here. I doubt most could get their lazy bums 10 miles down a groomed trail! It’s easy to criticize from your warm lazy boy. Perhaps put down the bon-bons and beer and start doing a little research IN THE FIELD. If most didn’t hear, WES, WOODY & TONY find his evidence compelling. What more do you want? That last sentence was rhetorical, BTW.

  31. Curtis R

I had never seen high quality copies of Standings video, just stills of the faces and thought they looked hoaxes. But the videos were pretty amazing. The blink looked totally natural, not robotic and not makeup on an actor. The Devil face was the best, most natural and intriguing. But if you notice the movement in his eyes, he looks very alive. The other faces lacked any eye movements at all, and that is why I have been quite sceptical of those.
If Standing turns out to be right, his name will go down in history alongside Lewis Leakey, Diane Fossey, and Jane Goodall.

  32. Robin D

Currently watching Todd’s version of a documentary. Not impressed and there are a lot of problems with it. First, the scene where the supposed bigfoot is standing behind the tree and Todd was not more than 20 ft from it using an IR camera. Why would a bigfoot, which is known for observing it’s surroundings, have its back turned away from a human crunching through the snow behind it? From witness testimony on SC, the bigfoot never turn around completely, but retreat at an angle where they can keep their eyes on the human. Also, Todd was standing at an angle that was obviously higher or level from where the bigfoot was standing. When he went to the same spot for a size comparison he laid the camera down on the ground at a position lower than the original footage. That alone would create the appearance that Todd was shorter than the “subject” standing behind the tree. Most researchers I watch on Youtube and elsewhere always make an honest effort to do size comparisons from the same height/angle/position/etc. This comparison shouldn’t even be considered plausible as evidence.
Second, if Todd is this great outdoorsman and agile footed, why was he falling all over himself in the apple gifting part of the documentary. He was only taking 3 – 4 steps in either direction and he was acting as if he was on a ship being thrown around during a bad storm. He pointed out several times that it was hard to avoid his light that was on the ground (why?), but yet at the point when the bigfoot were within distance of the light, he steps on it. I mean, really? Additionally, his stationary camera was set up at ground level pointed toward the log with the apples on it, right? Well, why did he stoop down right in front of the camera blocking it when the supposed third bigfoot showed up. Todd is supposed to have all the years of research and evidence gathering experience, but he kneels right in front of the camera that is setup to actively record the apples being taken? That my friends is called a hoax move if anything. Blocking the camera or turning it away right at the moment that something happens. As for the apple taker, “it” was reaching in from the right with its arm below the level of the log. There was no hillside descent directly behind the log, so how could a 7 ft animal reach in at a position below the level of the log that was only a few feet off the ground? An animal the size of a bigfoot would reach in from the top or side and then lift the apple up and away. It wouldn’t be able to grab the apple and take it down the backside of the log. This animal is just too big to be able to do that. I think it was a person laying on the ground behind the log with a “gorilla” arm glove on reaching “up” and taking the apples. A real bigfoot would have to reach down to pick them up.
Lastly, Utah Sasquatch, I believe, has provided more evidence of the existence of bigfoot in his short Youtube videos than Todd did in this hour and a half documentary. I’m sorry, Todd might have had an experience in the past, but this is possibly the worst example of someone trying to cash in on the bigfoot subject.

  33. footer2

    what a fucking joke!!!!
    Todd is a fruitcake!!!
its too bad his money can buy peoples support
wes for you to talk shit about one researcher and then practically make love to a joke of a researcher like Todd Standing is beyond foolish
maybe you could just have a show about regular people who have encounters…………….
oh wait i heard you say those exact words when you started this adventure .
but no longer every show has an “expert” or researcher or author.
i have always been into bigfoot and I AM ALWAYS IN THE MOUNTAINS OR AT THE RIVER OR AT THE LAKE.
I SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN THE WOODS. so all you armchair researchers who call other people armchair researchers because a retarded fucking nutjob asshole dickhead like Todd Standing spends time in the woods, dont come at me with the get off your ass remarks.
i have seen bigfoot, i know they dont all look the same, for a huge gigantic log to conveniently knock todds camera off the bigfoot just long enough to let him slip away is just another todd standing flim flam
