SC EP:268 Strange chatter in the woods

A listener writes “I’m Chris, from Ohio. Would first like to say I really enjoy your show. I’ve been listening for a good 6 months or more now. I look forward to it every week. I’v been considering writing in for a little while now. I have a couple of stories that may be interesting for your show. I will try to sum them up quickly so you can get an idea.

The first is a short story that happened to me back in June of this year. I was up with a friend in Sleeping Bear Dunes Michigan. It is a national lakeshore along lake Michigan. We were up for a weekend camp trip. One morning we got up early to go check out this overlook. It was about 7am we were walking the trail to this overlook. There was rainy weather off and on so that morning it was really foggy.

Everything was still and dead quiet. As we were on the trail, suddenly something large came crashing down through the tree tops about 20-25 yards from us. When the object hit the ground it had a deep thud signifying it was very heavy. A minute or two later I started to hear what sounded like (the closest comparison I can think of) small children basically chattering off in the distance, in the direction the heavy object seemed to have come from.

Immediately I thought of everything I had heard on your show. It seemed to me to be an exact replay of things I’ve heard other guests talk about. I continued to hear the chatter as we walked on. We made it to the overlook, hung out for a while and then headed back to the car. As we passed the same area of the chattering, I could still hear it only much more faint this time and farther away. I never saw anything, never heard any other movement or anything else. That was it. I can’t confirm anything but all of this reminded me of many other people’s encounters on the show, even occurring in the same order as others.

The next story is one that happened to me a long time ago. I had to be around 13-14 years old. My dad and his wife (not my mom) lived in Ohio at the time. We were at my uncles rural property (private property) down in south-central Ohio. Dad had a pull-behind camper at the time. It was a mid-size, where there was a bedroom in the back and in the front the bench seat folded down into a bed. I was sleeping on the fold down bench in the front there. About 1:15am I woke up to an absolutely god awful, hair raising sound. Probably the scariest sound I’ve ever hear before or since. The best way I can describe it is if you can imagine a demonic psychopath slowly walking slowly around the camper with his mouth up against the outside wall doing a “yell-breathing sigh” as loud and hard as he possibly can. (I’m actually tearing up a bit writing this, haha). But this sound was something straight out of a horror movie. Dad and his wife woke up, the 2 dogs they had were barking. This sound went on for probably 10-12 minutes (seemed like an hour) before dad finally got up and opened the door to peer outside.

I yelled at him to wait so I could load the shotguns we had with us first (we were visiting so we could go hunting on the property). He went out anyway. When he opened the door, the sound became a lot more clear. It still sounded like the possessed breathing psycho, but there was also a low pitched screeching scream happening with breathing sound. Both sounds were SUPER loud and echoing all around the valley of the woods. We never saw anything. Only these terrible sounds. After a couple minutes we gave up and went back in the camper. The sounds eventually lessened and went away. That was it. The next day we went walking down a normally traveled path to see if we could see anything. It was in the direction of the screaming.

We didn’t find anything out of the ordinary except one thing. There was a tree with a branch that hung lower than all others on the tree or any other trees around it. The day before it was just a branch just like any others around. That day, that branch had been completely skinned down to the white wood. Not a spec of bark left on it anywhere. There were tons of long thin shreds of back all around the area below it.

We dismissed it as a really pissed off bobcat at the time. I had my doubts about that back then and still do now. I’ve listened to recordings of bobcats and none have ever sounded close to how this thing sounded. What we heard was in my opinion way too loud and way too deep (depth with the higher pitches). It was just incredible. What I don’t understand is I don’t think it really sounded like any noises or recordings I’ve heard of what people claim to be bigfoot. So I really don’t know if that is what it was or if the story pertains to your show’s subject matter or not. All I know is that it scared the daylights out of me and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

    RE.: the NM professor $7500.00- wish we could crowd source or fund source for the guy, so he can pay the tax payers back.
    By the way, take a poll of the taxpayers FIRST and see how many would like to fund it first, before crying over it!
    Maybe we could all sign up for the prof’s course -that’d show Universities what a draw it is! AND if he discovers any evidence/proof and becomes a well known scientist, well then they’d all be saying they funded him way back when.

      Don’t forget Donald Rumsfeld said that the pentagon lost 3 billion dollars the day before 9-22. It was never brought up again and their worried about 7500 dollars .

        It’s not lost at all. It’s in the Black Projects. The real government that needs no approval from anyone is spending money with no accountability. The government you do see including the president are just people passing through not lifers like the Black Project Government. Wes could do a show on that but I’m afraid we wouldn’t hear from Wes next week or ever.

      True story Blake, I personally don’t like my money being stolen from me to pay for anything. It’s 2 separate issues for me. Taxpayer money shouldn’t be used for this, but at the same time, these guys are clearly closed minded and ignorant, and that bothered me a lot.

Its not even close to a leprechaun or unicorn because IT IS NOT A MYTH.. then a senator talking about tax payer spending are you serious? we pay your over paid salary you jackass go suck something.

    I am in academia as a professor and there are many ways in which public or school funds are spent. Looking for bigfoot is one of the better ways to spend money, if you ask me. Often we use univ. funds to buy books we don’t read and trips to conferences where we give a 15 minute paper and then have fun for a few days on the public dime. Everyone in academia knows this, but univ. presidents are politicians and thus the fuss about this. Both the media and politicians are looking for ways to make themselves look like guardians of the public purse. It is all politics…!

    I think it’s a shame that a “skeptic” would cause anyone so much trouble. From what I’ve heard the conference was very well attended by students and faculty as well as the public and was well advertised in advance. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Dr. Meldrum wrote something about it today.

    Enjoyed the “chatter” segment. That is so weird, and that sound he heard from the camper! Whoa.

      SLEEPING BEAR SAND DUNES ! Is where I found the Path of Someone who ran Diagonally across the Face of the Sand Dune …. And they HAD to have been Wearing Snow Shoes ! As the Foot Prints left in the Sand were GIGANTIC ! And it left me struggling with the Possibility of just That ? And Also the Distance between Tracks left in the Sand ? I couldn’t Make IT Work in My Mind ?
      ………… Yeah , Sure. It is Possible that MAYBE Someone was running across the Face of the Sand Dune ? & MAYBE that could exaggerate the Distance between these Tracks , to be Greater than They Actually Appeared ? ……. Maybe ? But to Think of someone was Wearing Snow Shoes while they did this ? just made it Unbelievable
      ( And at the Moment , I could not get the Chaperone to Look. I think She was Upset that she Had to Climb to the Top of the Dunes to come & Find Me? …… And I did not SEE any Reason to rub Her Face in IT. I kept it to Myself

            Secret Meetings never did Me Any Good anyhow. I am a Cold Turkey Guy. Anytime I have been Commanded to attend Treatment ? Since I worked Outta State ? I would just have Guys I worked with sign my Papers . They never did a Follow up.
            But I have had an Employer ask if I had ever considered talking to a Shrink ? And I never even thought of It.
            ( That Morning – The Day after Pay Day ! I was an Hour Late returning to the Motel that Morning for Work. I drove an Hour back to the Area I live in ….. To find the Women I was to take out To Dinner had just left on a Date. ( What can Ya Do ?) I drowned my disappointment with a Bottle of Cheap Scotch.
            After the Bar Closed ? I ended up somewhere with People I knew ….. But didn’t really hang out w/ These People. The 1 Guy I did Not KNOW ? Looked like Woody Harroldson from CHEERS . I was Drinking … I said to Him ” HEY WOODY ! Want To Hear a Joke ?”
            I do not Think His Name was Woody ? He didn’t Think My Joke was Funny ( I THOUGHT IT WAS A SCREAM ! ) And When He asked Me to Step Outside ? …………….. I Ain’t Scared. It ONLY Hurts the Next Morning . I said ” OH NO , That is My Line , DO YOU WANT TO STEP OUT?”
            I stepped off the Front Porch & Turned to get Sucker Punched right on the end of My Nose ! Knocked Me on My Ass ! He Jumped on My Chest. But at the Time in My Life ? I was Drilling 10 Foot Holes with a 7 Horse Chrysler Backpack Drill. I was In Shape. I Pulled an arm out from Under this Guy & fended off His Punches . When He was Pulled off Me – I was Salty ….. And I drove Back to Work.
            I Wrecked my Brand New Dodge 4×4 – Driving Through the Ditch ding 85 w/ The Cruise Set. When My Boss suggested I see a Shrink ? He told Me He Liked Me – I had a Good Work ethic . But He REFUSED to Employ Me just to watch Me Kill Myself ……… Fair. I Scheduled a Appointment w/ a Shrink for my Next Break. I went & paid the $70 Dollars , sat down & talked to this Guy. When I walked out – I didn’t Feel ANY Different. ( & I think That Rat Bastard Jipped Me ! I was only there for 45 Minutes ? I PAID FOR AN HOUR ! )
            My Next Hitch was Big Stone Gap Virginia . A few days into the Job – I purchased a SKS from a Gas Station – that was on some Back Road. I Walked Out of that Gas Station a NEW MAN !

            Ferget Them Shrinks ! I go to The Gun Store if I am ever Feeling Off Kilter . ( They DO Hold their Value )

    I appreciate you trying to improve the show, but I don’t like the intro. Either way it’ll still be a quality show, but the old intro was more exciting. Got me more hyped up to listen to an encounter. As for the professor, I’m all for it. I think it’s great to try to prove to see if what people encounter really exists. Real explorers/scientists/etc attempt to learn and prove the unknown. I also think it’s a well deserved slap back in the government’s face for keeping sasquatch covered up. Even if nothing is found, it still makes for an educational field trip. If he would have other things to teach students other than just sasquatch on those trips, it wouldn’t be too controversial.

    The part where the reporter calls binoculars “paraphenalia” for bigfoot researching cracks me up. I imagine a cartoon character like Elmer Fudd with these big old binoculars hunting around for a bigfoot in the woods like all it takes is a pair of binoculars to spot a bigfoot, lol, so cliche! Dude, now I know why I’ve had such a hard time finding bigfoot! I didn’t bring my freaking binoculars! Lol

    Noooooo,I know you are trying to work hard for the listeners but what ever you do don’t change the intro, that’s the 1 part I love is the 5 4 3 2 1, it’s been like that from the start and that’s the 1 part of the show that should stay the same, it’s how someone can tell just as soon as you hear the 5 I know it’s time, just as soon as I start saying 5 4 3 2 1 my wife starts laughing because she even knows and she doesn’t listen ro it, it’s a joke between us that it’s time for my show to come on and for me to go to bed and listen to it, what ever you do don’t change it, you should at least take some sort of vote on hear to be fair, I’m betting almost everyone else agrees with me

      i got my kids loving the show ages 9 11 and 13 and i always start my iphone with the podcast and the new show and i say ARE U READY!?! they say YEAAA and i BLAST 5 4 3.. and they shout and scream yea! it never gets old that music and the countdown and the people talking in that intro played super loud in my new Civic sedan lol LOVE it or at least we DID love it… wes please keep the old intro for the members only shows or somethibg please

Hey tell you what pal, you could have gone for free or you can go to any bigfoot conference and pay your 10 bucks and go around shouting there is no Bigfoot. These folks all have something in common. Perhaps the person that put this together should read Dr. Jeff Meldrums book Sasquatch, Legend Meets Science and watch the Documentary of the same name.

    And as for percentage of chance of Sasquatches being in the Sandia Mtns. 100 percent. There answered your question knucklehead.

    Listening to Lib Professors talk about wasting Tax Payer money is the most hyprocrital thing I’ve ever heard. They spend Billions of dollars a year trying to prove eveloution is true or global warming is true and other stupid experiemnts. What this tells me is the cover up on Sasquatch is ready to explode and all this is about is keeping everyone else quiet. This story is a warning to other colleges not to have scientific research on Sasquatch. With the Univeristy System so greedy it’ll be a while before one is done again. Average people are not upset by this, it’s lib professors holding onto their agendas that are upset by this. Libs in action.

    2 Comments: (1) for Chris – you said the trail you were on was the Imperial Trail. To my knowledge there is no Imperial trail on the dunes. Did you mean the “Empire Bluffs Trail” that is south of the village of Empire ? It certainly has the habitat for a possible small population of the creatures.
    (2) for Wes – really appreciate your efforts for improving the quality of the show where possible. For me, however, changing the intro is a case of “trying to fix something that’s not broke”. For me the new intro (music in particular) sounds like its going to be a show about ghosts and spooks. The old intro is like a rookie pitcher in his 1st game in the majors and pitches a perfect game – its not going to get better. As a side note, it seems a solid majority of those in favor of the old intro are male, while the majority of those for the new intro are female. Probably doesn’t mean anything in particular, but interesting nonetheless. All the best.

    I’m a big fan of honest constructive criticism… Sorry Wes, I think your old intro was MUCH better. I honestly think you should change it back and just leave it alone. It has become such a solid part of the “Sasquatch Chronicles” brand. It’s OK to maybe slightly modify it every once in a while but I think you threw the baby out with the bathwater on this one… Sorry it’s just my honest opinion, I know you can take it 😉

    dammit Wes man… things are changing why? im a paying member and have bee for some time. my son age 11 came around in this topic and we have bonded over this topic and all because he loves the original intro. we looked up all the things that were mentioned on that intro… the music, everything. changing the mic’s out has caused me to hear u Less and i have to crank my car speakers now to hear u good. change is good, but some things need to remain the same. please keep the original intro for members only shows maybe, and the new intro for free shows or vice versa… please.. i just feel like this was the best show out there on ANY topic… it was small and i felt included, but now u are branching out to the monsters in the shadows thing, i mean didnt yoyr poll u had us take where u asked if u should just keep it bigfoot or not tell u anything? it is YOUR show, but now i feel like i matter alot less than before things changed. dont let the growing size and the money change this home grown spectacular thing we have here. i listened for 40 minutes to guys talking poker on the show the other day… i dont want to leave but things are beginning to lose their feel. that thing u had going for so long was so unique, so wonderful. we really feel like a tight family here and now thats quickly changing. if nothing else, thanks for reading. please, take it to the base of this thing and keep it one on one, and keep it just about bigfoot. the reason 100% of us are here.

    Change is good, but I prefer the old intro better.
    If it’s not broken, don’t fix it…..
    Before changing marketing materials it’s a good idea to use a focus group for feedback before going public. ?

    Great show Wes as usual…but as a loooong time listener, I think the classic theme to the beginning of the show is much better. Seems more exciting with the 5,4,3,2,1 and the music. The new one is too bland and seems short with no Sasquatch sounds in the background. Maybe interchange the witness accounts once in awhile and keep the same overall theme…

    Love your show man, keep up the awesome work!! And the audio sounds amazing!

    ZERO POINT ZERO .. 0.0% Sucsess rate on BF expeditions!! Lol.. I find this whole NM university conference probably much more worth the $ then half of all tax payers dollars. To have a auditorium packed and the interest involved if they even just paid a dollar to get in it sounds like it would be more then covered..

    It always seems ironic to me that politicians or elected officials in your country or mine, lecture us about misappropriating funds. But we all must realise that no politician is likely to agree with anything to do with research,education or study of this creature no matter how much evidence is gathered, or sightings recorded. It would have to walk up to him and bite him on the ass for these kind of people to even contemplate the possibility of this creature’s existence. You can imagine his descendants arguing that ‘the world is flat’ and people who say otherwise should be ‘burned at the stake!!’.
    Mind you, it is America and there are still likely people who think the world is flat….only teasing.
    As for the opening of the show, I don’t see what was wrong with the old one. Change is not always a good thing?. Why fix what aint broke?. Whatever you do, don’t change ‘Pompea’ at the end of the shows. The thing is Wes that ‘signature’ tunes are so distinctive. You know it’s S.C as soon as you click ‘play’ and at the end ‘with the lights on’ is genius. You don’t need to change things coz you and the show are excellent. We have a soap opera in Britain called coronation Street’. It has ran from about 1961 and still has the same theme tune and ending now as it did then.

    The new introduction’s not bad.
    Proof of programs being tweek to much are Dogman Encounters and Dark Waters.
    Your sound system is perfection!
    The news media complaining about Bigfoot, real or not and money waste, the news media complains about EVERYTHING!

    EP152, that was my encounter, up in Oregon, on the south West side of Mt. Hood, Chris. Same thing 7am on a Sat morning cutting wood, heard the exact same thing, with my kid, and friend present as well. It was loud, far off, and moving fast. Sounded like 4-5 kids playing on a play ground

    Hey! I used to go to sleeping bear dunes with my dad. I love that place. We always took the trail that goes through the dunes to the lakeshore. I could definitely see that area as a squatchy area.

    I’m not referring to this shows guests, but some over the past few have made me adopt another YouTube Sasquatch channel’s advice on the authenticity of some of the accounts ( and there there are a lot that reek of warm fresh bull shit – some mentally ill people write in with accounts that are just beyond even the most open minded peoples realms of plausibility) where the host tell us from the Roundtable of Knowledge to not attack but just take it or leave it, no harm done. Good advice because really we weren’t there and just because the person telling their account may be nervous and just not good public speakers especially retelling an account that brings back terrifying memories. Try n be kind its hard but if you dot believe then just leave it and listen to the next show.

    I’m sure this guy wouldn’t agree with me, but I have a feeling that he may have been listening to a barred owl whilst inside the camper. People just don’t understand what crazy crazy CRAZY noises they make. And they make like 20 different calls, not just one. There’s one that’s going around on different Bigfoot shows that people are calling a bigfoot, but it is very clearly a barred owl. I have both seen and heard one by my house making the same noises. It sounds EXTREMELY primate and way way too loud to be an owl, but that’s what it is. honestly I thought we had monkeys in the woods when I first heard the one at my house until I put a flashlight on at one night. Could not believe it was a little tiny owl making all those horrible monstrous super loud noises.
