1sst! Could you see being in that cave and a grizzly walks in? I’m not sure the rifles in those days would have produced the results you needed against such an animal. Two people maybe but one person, maybe not. It’s got to be that guy with apposing thumb.

The “in those days” you are referring to is 1986 or 87, based on his recollection. Rifles have not changed dramatically in the last 30 years and cartridges certainly have not. Going, “postal without a plan” would likely turn the odds against him quickly and, it is my opinion, that he made the best choice of action. Also, I get the feeling that he was a bow hunter. I agree, bears don’t throw objects.

Mountain Men in that period favored the Hawken 50 cal or renegade 54 cal, backed up by a pistol of some sort. I have owned both of these firearms, and a 54 with a maxi ball and 170 grain powder charge will drop an elephant. Cartridge guns, with the exception of the sharps buffalo rifles, lacked the knockdown power needed for big animals like grizzly, who seem to keep coming even after they should be dead. LARGE caliber guns were favored in Grizzly country, 30/30 will just piss them off, 45/70 is even suspect for northern Brown Bears, the question wasn’t if it would kill the animal…eventually…..the question was if it would knock it backwards onto it’s ass during a full charge! lol!
