It was gritting its teeth at me in what was almost like an awful grin

“Hey Wes, I am a huge fan of your show and I really like the work you do. I thought I should tell you about what happened to me in 2014 in South Texas not far from the US/Mexico border.

I was out cat-fishing one night and was waiting on my buddy to show up to a spot we had thrown nets in to catch shrimp in some brackishwater canals that run throughout this area close to the area within an hour of the beaches and south padre island. I am from Kentucky so I was unfamiliar with the southwest terrain and the tall desert shrubs/trees. They grow very close together and are bushy and because of the canal they were a dark green color, everything further away from the water was dried up due to the heat. Most of the shrubs were about 6 feet tall along the banks of this canal.

I threw my cat net in and was pulling up some shrimp and some small catfish the size of my hand had gotten their barbs all tangled up in the net. Raccoons are really brave at this fishing spot and two of them came right up to the nets trying to steal shrimp that had fallen out. We always carry a baseball bat for the coons just for fun. I was paying close attention with my flashlight to the coons as they fought over a few little fish or shrimp and suddenly they both faced the water and stood dead still for a split second and bolted back into the thick brush.

I shined my light on the other side of the canal (which was only about 8 feet wide) and I saw big glowing black eyes between what seemed like matted dirty fur about 6 feet off the ground and I froze. I could see that it was on all fours and had huge hairy forearms and shoulders. It was gritting its teeth at me in what was almost like an awful grin and I could see big long teeth. I could hear the thing grunting and it sounded like it had pneumonia or some type of liquid in its lungs. I didn’t know what to do, i didn’t want to turn around because if it wanted to it could have leaped across the little canal and got a hold of me.

My friend Ricardo showed up right at that moment and his head beams flashed behind me. I briefly looked towards him as he got out of his truck and when I looked back the thing was gone. I have never felt so relieved to have someone beside me in my whole life. I told him we had to leave and he insisted on fishing all night like we had planned, but I was done with that place. I was shaking and my heart was pounding even after I got home. I tried to tell him what happened but he made fun of me. I haven’t told anyone about it since the incident and have had repetitive nightmares of this thing chasing me or grabbing me.”

Dang, I live in South Texas not far from the US/Mexico border. Could I have a little more info as to location so that I might assess my chances of having an unfortunate incident? I’m not one that is into getting nasty surprises. Thanks!

My area too! I knew we had to have some around here somewhere – hog country, deer country, lots of food, scarce but good water. Sounds like down toward Brownsville – great story. Thank you.

Great encounter! I know that fear too well. The ragged breathing is very interesting, I have heard of this from different accounts from all over US. Including the White Pennsylvania BF encounter where you can hear it breathing as the man gets close. If you type white penn bf into youtube it will pop up. Thanks Wes for all the cool blogs today!

Wow == more boogers in TX… more then you can shake a stick at… I’m thinking this is BF capital of the U.S. I know there everywhere but surely the numbers are greatest here. Food = water = cover.

I’m not too far from La Feria – I’d really like to know what people have seen down here and WHERE…I know that in Brownsville in the 1980’s someone encountered a hug bird of some sort – apparently it was built like a bird of prey but mega-size – teratorn size. I’ve watched the encounters of “batsquatch” as well. Don’t know what to believe concerning it but more than one person said they had seen it. A man in Raymondville apparently survived an attach by whatever it is.

you all are funny! I think the humor could help this man. Its just an animal(we are animals too) sharing space on planet earth. Our place on earth just happens to have a large population of BF….Just be glad you are not in africe being visited at night by a male lion. i dont think i would want to hear what happened to him.

Tom B: Good point about the breathing. A great many say they hear it breathing. It breathes heavy and hard when inhaling and exhaling, But a surprising number also say the breathing sounds sick. I’ve heard folks describe it as sounding like a lung infection, a sick bear, pneumonia, congested etc. Perhaps they are prone to having breathing issues? IDK just a thought.
