I’m not sure what I saw that day

A listener writes “The year was 1988 I was deer hunting on property that my family had leased in Louisiana. it was a full moon the night before so that day I went to make a mid day hunt.

As I walked into the woods I felt something just was not right but I could not put my finger on it. Anyway I got into my tree stand and was there for about an hour and the whole time I felt very uneasy like something was wrong not long after this I heard what I thought was a white crane (bird) making a strange sound to my left which was a swampy area which there was a small leeve going back to the bar pits and then the basin.

I then heard a tree cracking and hitting the water to my left. I then knew what was bothering me there was no sound in the woods, not birds not a thing it was dead still in the wood’s just the light wind blowing through the trees.

I then saw something dark which I believed was a bear at the time moving towards the left and rear of where I heard the tree fall. I sat in my stand but lost sight of the dark object not long after seeing it way back in the swamp. The hair on the back of my neck was standing straight up and I then got the very uneasy feeling I needed to leave the woods.

I then heard movement back behind me coming from the area where I had seen the object heading towards but now it sounded like it was working its way behind me in a small swampy area that was about 100 yards away.

I then got out of my stand and started walking fast back towards my truck which was parked on a cane field road. As I got towards the front of the woods I felt scared as hell I was also carrying a 9mm hand gun at the time. Now I’ve never done this before but I turned around and fired all 15 rounds of ammo into the woods behind me because I felt like something was not far behind me and was coming after me.

After doing this I made it to my truck and then heard the birds start sounding off again which after thinking about it until then I had not heard one bird or anything for that matter the whole time. I grew up in that area and had never been ran out of the woods by anything. I’m not sure what I saw that day or heard.

My son started listening to your show and had me start to as well. There was a sound that you played that sent the hair on the back of my neck standing up again. One night that you played, it was a whooping sound. I don’t want my name out to the public as I am in law enforcement.”

~ Sean, I’ve come to believe that ‘never’ is indeed a “relative” term. Chances are, that booger was on his belly when you started firing, and it was ‘just the thing’ to get you to your truck ( & in retrospect, hopefully you’ve seen ‘relativity’ from this experience, and practice it in your law enforcement service). Blessings and thanks for sharing.

Each encounter is different and the way an encounter is handled is different.. The main thing is to survive an encounter, and thankfully, the choices Sean made that day allowed him to survive. And we should not second guess those choices. None of us can say with certainty what we may do in such a circumstance.

That sudden panic and primal fear suggests he may have been hit with ultrasound. That would also help explain someone well trained in firearm safety firing at an unseen target (the neurotransmitters released during the fight or flight response suppress activity in the areas of the brain that are responsible for inhibitions and rational thought, so we can respond quickly to a threat without all that thinking stuff slowing us down). There was probably a booger hiding very near him.
