I Never Took My Eyes Off Of It

A listener writes “When I was about 22, my 2 brothers and my dad and I, went out hunting in north western NM. But the weekend before the hunt, we all went out for a scouting trip up there, just to find good spots, and to look for game trails and to figure out routs the deer take.

Well we’re driving up this area to find our possible camp sight. Now it was early in the morning and the sun wasn’t quite up, but there was a small glow from it in the sky but the land was still dark. Well as we were driving on this curvy 2 track my dad said oh look guys we need to be careful there are bear out here. Now me and my brothers never saw the bear, so my dad backed the truck up to put his headlight on it and it was gone. So my dad was like yeah it was brownish and standing on its hind legs maybe had it’s back against a tree scratching or something, but none of us never saw the bear except my dad. So anyway we do the scout saw plenty of deer and small groups of doe and faun all over the area.

We found a few places to camp and went home. Well the following weekend we went up for 3 days to do our initial hunt. We got there and set up camp so we could set out first thing on opening day of the hunt. So on day 1 me and my dad went together and he always drove. My dad is 6’5″ and weighed just over 500 at the time, so he couldn’t get around and hike. So each day we took turns going with my dad. So I went with him the first day then my second oldest brother went with him on day 2 and then the oldest on day 3. And on the days we didn’t go with my dad we would hike usually together. We are all very large men. The middle brother being the smallest at 6’2″ about 190, me 6’5″ 220, and my oldest at 6’4″ about 340. Now granted I’ve never been to the area before, and neither have my brothers. But we new the what the woods were. We grew up hunting and fishing all over NM, and my dad hunted in Raton before. So anyway, day 1 I was with my dad and my brothers went off hiking and no one got anything and didn’t see anything either. So day 2 me and my oldest brother went out hiking and finding places to sit and watch over game trails and still no one saw anything, no deer and other hunters nothing. And we had no issues at our camp sight either no vocals, no rocks, just chirping and the sound of the fire and us talking. My dad always taught us that when we hunt even if we don’t get anything, it’s still a good time and it that’s how we treated it. But we usually tagged out in full.

So anyway, day 3 came and I wanted to do something different and go separate from my middle brother cause my oldest went with my dad that day. So I told him that I will head up east and go a couple miles and he said okay he was gonna go west a couple miles. So it’s early morning about 4 ish, and I’m hiking through the thick vegetation for a little over an hour and I could see the glow of the sun coming up, but it was still dark on the land. So I thought to myself I need to find a spot and sit by a game trail before it gets light. So I happened upon this little clearing that’s about a 50 foot circle. So I find a spot and sit with my knees to my chest and my gun kinda in the ready position on my lap. And it’s dead quiet. As I sat there for about 15 min and the sun rose up, to my silent surprise I small group of doe walked right into the clearing. And I just sat and watched hopefully a buck would walk in soon. And mind you I am well camouflaged and I don’t smell like anything but dirt and pine. So I sat quietly and they came up really close to where I could touch ones nose if I wanted. And this went on for about 10 min or so. All of a sudden they all lift their heads looking at about my 8 position which is my left rear side. And all but one take off in a hurry.

The one that stayed kinda kept looking in the direction and then backed up slowly turn and kinda eased out of there. And I’m thinking ok what was that. Then I start to hear these heavy steps to my left rear, and I’m thinking ok is that my dad, I’m gonna be pissed if thats him. And how could he possibly have hiked up here, there’s no way my dad could do that. But I sat quietly and waited for him to say, hey dad you just ruined any chance of a buck walking up in here. I was quite ready to tell him that. So I sat still very quietly. And I heard the steps get closer and closer to me. So I turned my head to see my dad, and it wasnt my dad, so I froze never taking my eyes off of it. This thing came into full view never looking at me and walked all the way into the clearing. And I notice there was this branch at the edge of the clearing on this tree and it came to about its forehead, so it slightly sucked under the branch and still not looking at me, and I’m griping my gun tightly still on my lap. And it walked kinda to the middle of the clearing and squats down and does something to the grass which is close to 10 inches or so tall.

It used its middle finger and kinda twirled it in the grass and brought its finger to its face and sniffed it. When it sniffed its upper lip lifted. But it’s upper lip didn’t fold like a gorilla. It just lifted kinda like I would lift my upper lip. It then stood up and kinda huffed looking up. And I’m still in awe at this point, scared out of my mind. And it still didn’t look at me. So after it huffed, it started to leave, but mid step it stopped and without scanning the area, just boom turned its head and looked me dead in the eye. And I kinda freaked and said woah buddy. I don’t know why I did that and I really didn’t mean to say that. But in my head, I just thought don’t mess with it and it won’t mess with you.

Now it wasn’t mind speak like I’ve heard on your podcast, it was more just a thought. So after that thought came, it just kinda walked outta there, and within 10 feet of the thick brush it’s kinda blended and disappeared.”

Great close sighting with something new. Twirling that middle finger in the tall grass and smelling it. Is this a technique to pick up scent of animals? Or had it picked up the witnesses scent and that is why it huffed?

It’s always fascinating to me how they stop, turn and look right at you. Is that an acute intuition they have, or was there another one close by speaking to it telepathically?

That was such a good sighting! These creatures are not an ape, that’s for sure. Much of the time they seem like primitive humans, almost. Awe , it’s so confusing, lol.

We just talked about it after I read it to my husband. It is truly an amazing encounter. We agreed, the guy was spotted by the movement of his head , or as he followed the Sasquatch with his head as it made its way into the clearing. The fact is, as long as the hunter was still, perhaps he was invisible, but the second he moved, the chances are, he was spotted.

I really don’t recall anything like this before. I was blown away by the creature moving its finger in a circle then smelling it for a trace of something, as though discerning what had moved through there clearing. Brilliant. That’s a new one to me.
