I Heard The Sierra Sounds

A listener writes “I live in south Texas and I had a weird encounter while hunting/camping. My Dad, brother, and I went hunting this past deer season and slept in a big tent during the night.

We saw plenty of deer during the hunt and some decent bucks but heard something odd during the night that was very close and weird sounding. My dad and I heard it but my brother was asleep, we heard cows mooing in the field across the road from our deer lease and coyotes howling but then the night went dead calm. We heard the weird whooping noise in what sounded like the field across the road (where the cows were at). The whooping sound moved from the field to the river to the west of us (which is closer to our camp).

There is a bottom to the north of our camp that runs down into the river and occasionally has water flowing through it (almost like it’s following the water). At this point I’m scared shitless in my sleeping bag because not even 2 hours earlier I heard the Sierra sounds on your podcast and this thing was identical to that. Out of pure fear I put in my earbuds and fall asleep not wanting to hear this thing anymore. My dad on the other hand, who has hunted for 20+ years in Texas and Colorado, stays awake. He said he’s never heard anything like it.

He never told me about what he heard that night until the next day when I mentioned hearing the noise. He told me he heard it in the bottom below our camp around 2 hours after I fell asleep (the bottom is only 50-60 yards from our tent). He said he heard it growling and moving around in the dry leaves in the bottom, the way he described the growl sent shivers down my back. I believed in Bigfoot but never expected to experience one nearby me. I haven’t told anyone about this encounter fearing backlash or being made fun of.”
