Hippos cannot swim or breathe underwater, and unlike most mammals they are so dense that they cannot float. Instead, they walk or run along the bottom of the riverbed.

Because their eyes and nostrils are located on the top of their heads, they can still see and breathe while underwater.

Marmosets are small tree-dwelling primates from South America, often weighing less than eight ounces. They appear quite unassuming at first glance, yet research published in the journal Science suggests that marmosets may be masters of communication.

The experts report that these little monkeys can call each other by specific “names” using their distinct vocalizations, shedding new light on how social communication might have evolved in primates.

Insights Into marmoset communication

Marmoset communication has long fascinated scientists for its complexity and human-like qualities . Recent studies reveal that baby marmosets learn to “talk” by mimicking their parents, much like human infants acquire language through imitation.

Scientists have observed that they also demonstrate conversational etiquette, taking turns during vocal exchanges in a way that mirrors human dialogue.

Furthermore, the researchers found that marmosets eavesdrop on their neighbors’ conversations and even make judgments based on what they overhear.

These behaviors highlight a level of social sophistication that may offer deeper insights into the evolution of communication in primates , including humans.

The discovery of their use of “names” to address individuals further cements the marmosets’ reputation as some of the most intriguing communicators in the animal kingdom.

Marmosets recognize their names

The study, conducted at Hebrew University , included observations of marmosets housed in a specially designed facility.

The researchers noticed that these animals exchanged a series of chirps, sometimes described as “ phee-calls ,” which showed consistent patterns when directed toward certain individuals.

According to the experts, marmosets seemed able to recognize when a call was directed at them and respond accordingly, indicating that these calls function as personalized labels. This behavior was previously considered a hallmark of humans, dolphins , and elephants.

The team found that marmosets consistently used the same phee-calls to address specific partners. This aligns with the idea that the animals are capable of flexible vocal production, rather than relying solely on reflexive calls.

Advanced communication skills of marmosets

A key step in the study involved placing pairs of marmosets in the same room, with a barrier that restricted their view of one another. They noted that the monkeys began to engage in regular back-and-forth calls, directing certain phee-calls to particular individuals.

When a computerized playback system reproduced these calls, the monkeys responded more accurately when they heard the calls they associated with themselves.

“This is the first time that we have seen this in non-human primates,” explained study lead author David Omer from the Hebrew University’s Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC).
Although other social mammals also demonstrate sophisticated vocal learning, the marmoset’s ability to apply these calls in such an individual-specific manner expands our view of their communication methods.

Shared traits with other animals

Previous work has shown that African elephants may use name-like calls for each other. Marmosets now join this short list of species that single out peers with distinct sounds .
While they rely heavily on sight to navigate their environment, these monkeys also need to coordinate in dense forests where vision can fail. Their range of social calls helps them stay connected as they move through the canopy.

Scientists say the phee-call’s meaning was originally thought to be a way for marmosets to broadcast their location. Now, evidence suggests the animals are actually calling each other by “name.”

This skill even extends to members that are not blood relatives, who often learn the group’s vocal patterns and adapt them to fit their social network.

Early precursors of language

According to the experts, these findings hint at how early precursors of language might have begun in primate lineages.

Instead of emerging out of nowhere, human language might have deeper biological roots that began with animals forming signals to name group members.

The researchers noted that talkative marmosets could reshape the way we study animal language potential. Certain features of primate communication – like turn-taking in conversations – seem especially pronounced in these marmosets.

Investigations into their learning processes continue to reveal how marmosets adapt sounds and create specific calls that resemble personal labels or “names.”

Moose are mighty creatures, but sometimes we forget exactly how big they can be. While moose can range from 5 feet to nearly 7 feet, at the shoulder, add a couple feet for the head and neck, but the expansive width of their horns combined with their leggy build can often deceive how big they are, usually making them appear bigger. While that is the average size for a moose, the largest moose recorded, according to Moose Hunting Info, was shot in 2004 in Alaska, came in at an astonishing weight of over 2300 pounds, and was monstrous 15 feet tall. The giant creatures are often docile, but when provoked, they can be very aggressive and are the last animals that you want to be in trouble with.

However, even when they are docile, their size can intimidate anyone. Recently, a social media user shared a video of a moose standing outside her home in the mountains of Colorado. The sheer size of the animal left social media stunned. The user shared that the moose was staring at her through her window. The woman and the moose gazed at each other before they returned to searching the snow-covered ground for food. While the interaction between the two is tender, the animal’s size left viewers speechless. The moose appears to be the same height as the home’s roof—it’s massive. Even I had to watch the video a few times to see if it looked like it might be AI, but given that this user has posted multiple clips of this moose or a similar one, which all appear the same size, I was stunned to see how large the animal was. While I still find myself trying to comprehend how large the mammal is, in the same breath, I am taken aback by its beauty. It’s terrifying yet stunning at the same time. Take a look for yourself.

Earth.com writes “Humans have a knack for getting around on two legs. Many of us take a long run for granted, trotting along city streets or forest trails without giving it much thought.

Unlike ancient human ancestors like Lucy, modern bodies power us forward at impressive speeds, with our muscles and tendons playing a crucial role.

But there was a time in our deep past when the earliest members of our family tree were nowhere near as quick.

A new study published in the journal Current Biology takes a careful look at the locomotive ability of one particular human ancestor, and the results are eye-opening.

The research was led by a team of natural scientists, musculoskeletal specialists, and evolutionary biologists affiliated with several institutions in the UK, in collaboration with a colleague from the Netherlands.

Lucy’s bones reveal her running skills

Roughly 3.2 million years ago, a hominin known as Australopithecus afarensis lived in East Africa. Fossils of one of its most famous members, Lucy, were found in 1974 in Ethiopia , shedding light on how early human relatives stood and moved.

Lucy’s skeleton showed that her species could walk upright on two legs, but her proportions and muscular arrangement were very different from what we see in humans today.

After studying her frame using 3D computer simulations, the researchers concluded that Lucy could run on two legs, yet she never matched the speeds that come so naturally to modern humans.

Putting Lucy’s running speed to the test

A digital model, shaped from Lucy’s fossil bones and data from modern apes, allowed the experts to study how her leg muscles might have worked.

The team plugged these details into a computer program that tried countless ways of activating muscles, then picked the best way to run as fast and efficiently as possible.

The results showed that even under ideal conditions, Lucy’s top speed was around 16 feet per second, much slower than a typical modern human who can easily push beyond 26 feet per second.

“It’s a very thorough approach,” explained Herman Pontzer, an evolutionary anthropologist at Duke University.

Searching for the hidden secret in muscles

Modern humans have a special setup in the lower leg. Compared to an ancient hominin, we carry a more elastic Achilles tendon linked to shorter muscle fibers.

This arrangement helps store and release energy during running, reducing the effort it takes to move forward. In Lucy’s time, these spring-like running features had not yet evolved .

Without them, even adding human-like muscles to her frame could not bring her speed up to modern standards.

“This tells us that the body shape of A. afarensis is significantly limiting its running speed compared to that of modern humans,” said Karl Bates, an evolutionary biomechanics researcher at the University of Liverpool.

What speed can say about survival

Running isn’t just about setting personal records. It plays a crucial role in how a species competes for food and escapes predators.

Modern humans, for example, can run long distances at a steady pace. By covering more ground, we found better opportunities to gather resources and cooperate.

Lucy’s species – with smaller frames and without the muscular tricks of modern legs – might not have covered long distances very well.

How body shape changed over time

Long legs, a defined Achilles tendon, and specific muscle structures did not just appear overnight. Early hominins began with a body design that was good for standing and walking upright.

Over generations, certain features shaped up, allowing humans to pick up the pace. As the genus Homo emerged, new body proportions offered better running ability, along with improved endurance .

This shift provided real-world advantages to our ancestors. By moving faster and more efficiently, they could reach distant places, follow game animals, and expand into new environments.

Features that help humans run

Walking upright and running well are not automatically the same thing. Lucy’s skeleton shows that even though her species walked on two legs, they did not run like we do. The skills and features that help humans run came along later.

Instead of simply walking better and somehow becoming speedy runners, our ancestors had to accumulate changes one step at a time. Running was not just a byproduct of standing tall; it demanded its own unique tweaks to muscles and bones.

The evolutionary story of running

Studies that model ancient skeletons like Lucy offer a peek at how our capabilities evolved . By combining insights from fossils, simulations, and knowledge of modern muscle mechanics, scientists can understand how each piece of the puzzle fits together.

The findings not only confirm that Lucy’s species lacked the running power of modern humans, they also highlight where in our evolutionary story those extra boosts emerged.

The research reminds us that our ability to run long and hard is not an accident – it is the product of millions of years of subtle, meaningful changes.

While Lucy’s top running speed and endurance might seem modest, she represents an earlier chapter in a long series of refinements.

By the time we arrived on the scene, we had the legs and lungs for distance. Though our modern world no longer requires daily runs to survive, the natural gift is still built into our bodies, waiting to be used.

Four individuals were arrested for allegedly attempting to defraud their insurance companies by claiming a bear had damaged their vehicles — when in fact it was a person in a bear costume attacking the cars.

The suspects were all Los Angeles-area residents, according to a statement released Wednesday afternoon by the California Department of Insurance.

The suspects varying in age, were Ararat Chirkinian, 39, of Glendale; Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32, of Glendale; Ruben Tamrazian, 26, of Glendale; and Alfiya Zuckerman, 39, of Valley Village.

The statement said that all four were charged with conspiracy and insurance fraud.

Suspects claimed on Jan. 28, 2024, that a bear entered their 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost and caused interior damage, according to the Department of Insurance. They provided video footage of the incident, stating that it had occurred during their visit to Lake Arrowhead.

Upon reviewing the footage, the Department of Insurance said that it suspected fraud. Officials said that they believed right away that the bear in question was actually a person in a bear costume.

Initiating an investigation — named Operation Bear Claw — the department learned that two other claims had been filed to different insurance companies with similar details: the same location and the same date.

Similar to the claim that originally drew the unit’s attention, the two other reports stated that a bear had attacked their cars: a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350, according to the statement.

Each of the two other claims had submitted video footage as part of their evidence. And in both of those videos, the department said it believed that they were looking at the same bear costume.

However, the department said that it sought an outside opinion on the case before making a final determination. Investigators reached out to a biologist from the California Department of Wildlife, who then independently reviewed the evidence for Operation Bear Claw.

The biologist stated that “it was clearly a human in a bear suit,” according to the statement. Authorities were able to execute a search warrant for the people involved in the alleged insurance fraud scheme. Officials confirm that a bear costume was found in one of the suspects’ homes.

At the time of the arrests, officials reported that the insurance companies had already paid out some of the claims, totaling $141,839. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.

Tonight I will be welcoming Waylon and Reno from Alberta, Canada. I will also be speaking to Angel from GA. Reno writes “Hey Wes, been a listener of your show for a while now and I had a strange encounter on Thanksgiving (Canadian thanksgiving Oct 14th). Been hesitant to contact you about it but I thought you might want to hear it.

I’m located in Northern Alberta. I’ll start from the absolute start, my brother and a family friend went hunting around two years ago a few miles from my family friends house down an overgrown cut line that turns very swampy. My brother and him are avid hunters. It rained the night before and the ground was very soft as they went in on ATVs so my brother got off to see how bad one spot was to cross and noticed large footprints in the ground spacing around 8 feet apart in a straight line. They both never seen anything like that before so after leaving my brother came back to the spot and casted the track (I can send photos of the tracks and the print he casted)

Fast forward to this Thanksgiving. Our family friend now lives in a different location, with a butcher living at that house. The butcher got a blood infection around a month before Thanksgiving and was in the hospital, so nobody was staying at that house for around a month. Me and my brother went to that place at around 11pm on the night before thanksgiving to use his smokehouse to smoke a biscuit for thanksgiving the next day. I stayed in my truck that was parked towards the overhead doors listening to music while it smoked while my brother stayed in the shop. I’m not very easily creeped out at all but the entire time I kept looking over my shoulder into the woods. I just had an eerie feeling the entire time sitting waiting for the meat to finish smoking. We finished up went back to my place in town and cooked it.

Fast forward to Thanksgiving day. Me and my brother went back at around 2pm in the afternoon to use the shops butcher equipment to cut and package the meat. While my brother was inside I went to my truck to charge my vape. Across the gravel road lies a run down yard where a farmer has a run down trailer without siding with white paper exposed half blowing off and a couple of old beat up trashed vehicles. As I looked up after plugging in my vape I noticed through an opening in the trees there was a black figure that resembled a head moving out from behind the trees looking at me and moving back in, doing this continuously. I only noticed it because the white siding paper was directly behind it so it really stood out and it was the only thing moving because there was no wind that day.

I stared at it for a few minutes trying to figure out what I was looking at and my brother eventually came looking for me and I pointed it out to him. We came to the conclusion that it was probably a person on a deck moving stuff in and out of the trailer. He went back inside and I kept looking at it and waved. About a minute after my brother went inside and after I waved this figure really started swaying fully into the opening and back behind the trees. I heard on your podcast of them doing this sort of thing but I blew it off thinking yeah right this has to be a person. I’m always teasing my brother about Bigfoot and now I’m seeing this from a yard that’s a 10 minute drive from town? I eventually went inside helped my brother pack the meat and we left. There was no vehicle parked on the road or in the yard when we drove by and there was no deck on the side of the trailer where I saw the figure. That creeped me right out.

We went back the next day to check out the yard and see if we could see if there was any evidence of something being there. We didn’t find anything but I dropped my brother off exactly where the opening was and went back to the same spot in the yard where I stood the previous day to gauge how tall this was (I thought there was a deck where it was because it was so high up). There was an old junk truck near the opening and my brother stood inside of the door and put his hand all the way in the air and I could see the bottom of his fingers through the opening. After seeing that I got chills man. My brother is 6’3’’ so whatever we saw was extremely tall.

Would love to come on the show and talk about it if you’d like, don’t want to use my actual name though. I feel like here in Northern Alberta Bigfoot encounters aren’t too uncommon, I’ve heard accounts from family friends and my grandfather had a man that worked for him with a strange encounter building a dam with a family of the workers work from the other side of the river.”

Angel writes “I writing to let you know of some encounters I have had over the years. My first encounter took place in Gordon County , Sugar Valley Ga near Johns Mountain in the early fall of 2013 when this encounter took place it was myself, my ex husband, my mother, and inlaws, we were in what they call the upper field checking on the pumpkins they had planted after my in laws got done checking on everything we were all standing around talking when all of sudden a tree falls, keep in mind we hadn’t had any rain in weeks and the ground was super dry, and no wind was blowing, I made the comment it’s weird the tree just falls and jokingly i said maybe its a bigfoot and my mother in law laughs it off and states trees fall all the time, I remember my father in law as well having to put scarecrows up to get animals out of the crops, i remember several times him saying the watermelons and pumpkins being spilt open in halves it appeared something had purposely spilt them open and were eating the inside , this property boarder’s the WMA .

the second incident happened in a different area of the same property, a few weeks after the tree fall, my ex husband and I had just pulled in our drive way when his cousin came running out of the house with his shotgun saying something tall and dark was trying to get the chickens , he had fired his shot gun towards the chicken coop, and the upright figure ran off, i asked him was it a bear and he said no a bear doesn’t run upright on 2 feet, i went into the house and came out a few minutes later to get something out of the car when i noticed a huge footprint, i called my ex husband and his cousin over to look at it and his cousin said thats no average foot print. keep in mind it had been raining and the footprint was very distinct that was the only noticeable foot print as the rest of the area was grassy. we guessimated the footprint was about 14 inches in length, and about 8 inches in width after noticing the footprint we just brushed it off an went back into the house, nothing else happened after that.

the final incident happened in the winter of 2013 in a little community in gordon county ga called nickelsville on hwy 136 , me and my niece had just left my parents house and it was right at dusk my niece was driving and had turned onto hwy 136 off of hwy 225 heading back towards Resaca when a large upright hair covered creature crossed the road in front of us the creature crossed from left to right and took 2 steps to completely cross the road, my niece freaked out slammed on breaks and stopped in the middle of the road and asked what fuck was that , we were both shocked and terrified at what we had just seen, my niece was so upset that i had to drive home. we guessimated it to be around 7 feet tall. it scared my niece so bad that she didnt wanna go on that road for a long time, keep in mind this about 20 miles from fort mtn where there has been numerous sasquatch encounters.”

I grew up on an Arabian horse farm in a house built in the 1820’s. My family owns about 100 acres with much of it is used for horse pasture while most is still thick woods and surrounded by more.

I was introduced to your podcast almost two years ago by my step dad. He’s a professional technology salesman and far more worldly and traveled than I’d assume the ‘average’ Bigfoot believer is. But… as an experienced hunter, he has had eerie personal experiences on our family land that have made him a believer. He’s had no true sightings, but after hearing a number of your guests… I think I have.

I’m not sure if you want me to write my entire experience in detail, but I can give you the general gist:

In either the early fall or a late summer evening of 2008 or 2009 (ending of my High School years) while walking between my girlfriends house and my grandparents where I was living, I was stalked by a large, dark furred creature.

It always kept just inside the wood line (even as I made a wrong turn and had to back-step), only walked while I walked (hindsight giving the impression it was on two feet), terrified two large neighboring great dane dogs (known for barking at everything), and I actually saw it.

As I made it the first few yards into grandparent’s driveway, I heard its steps break from my pattern and take huge strides behind me (I can’t confirm if it sounded bipedal or not). I turned around, maybe 15yrs from it, as it stood completely silhouetted by moonlight at the road’s edge. I saw it had just stopped its motion when I turned by how it seemed to finish its last lean from a step and straighten its head toward me.

It was easily just shy of 6ft and on all fours. From my seconds of view, it seemed like a huge upper body to a smaller rear. But in hindsight, it could have easily just been a hunched and squatting humanoid shape. I couldn’t see its face or the full shape of its head, given its posture. But I know it was looking straight at me. And intentionally very still.

The two seconds I looked Directly at this thing immediately triggered a fear I’ve never had before. Ever. I tore off and sprinted the last 10 yards to the basement door, flung myself behind it, locked everything I could, and slid a can of nails ahead the door. Maybe as a signal chime or maybe just out of panic. I stood ahead that door for close to an hour. Just waiting.

I still don’t know how I slept that night.

Since the experience, I’ve told multiple close family members and tried to rationalize what it could’ve been. Like some family have hypothesized, I figured it could’ve been a large black bear (now rare to the area), a Massive rogue mountain lion (maybe distorted from the view and at least one rogue lion was confirmed passing through the area years later), or a huge stray dog.

Honestly, it didn’t feel like anything I’ve ever been around before. It didn’t feel natural. Granted, I’ve never been ‘hunted’ before. But this Thing did not hold the proportions or characteristics of any of those animals. Or, anything I’ve ever heard of.

Just months after it happened there was a local report that made the local news of a “large creature” that was possibly “dog like” seen. Happened to be associated with a random burn patch in an open field which lead some folk to calling it a “Hell Hound.” I started to think that’s what I saw.

Up to just about a year ago, I heard on one of your interviews a man mentioned he thought a bigfoot was a Buffalo at first glance by how it hunched in proportion. With that and your recent interviews mentioning “dog men” all possibly correlated or confusing one for the other really made me think; I think I saw a bigfoot.

That’s my little story for you. I’m sure you get about a thousand a day, but thought I’d share it someone who doesn’t think I’m nuts.”
