A Logger’s encounter

A listener writes “Hi I am from chase,BC Canada I had 2 encounters this one happened on OCT 13 2017.

I was at work I run a feller buncher a machine that has led bright lights and I cut trees down, I was working the evening shift, now my machine broke down the night before I was about 500 meters were I parked my truck.

So I ended up walking to my truck went home, my boss calls me and said the alternator had broke and they fixed it and it was fine for me to work the next night, now the encounter.

I started my shift at 4 pm all was working well I was a good 1000 meters in the logging block all night cutting trees..all of a sudden my lights were starting to go dim and the machine was starting to power down.

I thought about the alternator not charging the battery I turned the machine around and started to drive back to were my truck was parked it made it about 30 meters and totally died I shut the key off and figured I would let the machine sit for 10 mins and try start it. I am sitting in this machine in the pitch black and something hits the back of my machine. I am thinking what the hell it can’t be a tree top or snag falling because I am at least 2 tree lengths in to a clearing, then again something hits the machine again.

Now I am frozen, scared, I try to start the machine and no power I try turn lights on no power…I look at my watch it’s 12 am I say to myself f#@k the day shift crew won’t be here till 4 am.

So I am sitting in this machine it has lexan windows and built to with hold any trees from breaking in to the cab and metal bars so I figure I am safe then I hear a thud on the the back of my machine, and hear metal creaking sound.

I know in my mind I heard this sound before then I realize the sound is from were I step on to the machine to get on the back hood. I realize that something has stepped on the back of my machine, all the time I am thinking who the hell would walk up to a dangerous machine that falls trees at night time.

I shine my flash light through the window and yell what the f$#k, I hear the metal bend and something hit the ground with a loud thud . I realize what ever this was jumped off my machine and the thud was loud. Now I realize that what was on my machine was a living thing.

I am frozen I turn my light off, I try the machine again nothing I try the lights on my machine and they turn on very dim from the battery been drained I look to the side of the machine were I heard the loud thud and could make out something walking away on two feet I am realizing now what this is I am sick to my stomach I have a sudden urge to pee.

I am looking out the windows now wondering were this forest person went all that this is happening my lights on the machine are starting to go dim fast, stuff is going through my mind like do I run to my truck or is there more than one out there, I turn the lights off and sit in the pitch black and wait it is now 2 o’clock and I am waiting and listening for this thing to make any noise or to give me a hint that it’s still around and nothing another 2 hours goes by and in the distance I see head lights coming through the fall season mist coming down the road I turn on the key and try to reach my coworkers on the two way radio thank god they heard me I tell them I am broke down and my coworker said he will be out in the skidder machine to pick me up .. I was so glad to see him.

He drove me to my truck I drove off that mountain and told my boss I was never going to work night shift again..I have a sketch of what I saw running away from the machine and pics of the machine I was running”

Sometimes l get the feeling that they don’t like you logger BOYS messing with there Forest… l even heard that some times you guys go missing. I think your choice to get off the night shift and work strictly days was a good move on your part. Not that they are far from you in the daytime.. Just less likely to get attacked.. more people around you the better.. Stay alert. Good to hear your OK. Thanks
