I am a Pastor at a new Church here in town. We are about a two hour drive from Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi. There is a creek here named Coleto Creek that winds through our county. It has a very sandy, beach like bed with the water flowing through small channels depending on the season. There are groups of bushes and small trees that grow in the creek bed around the ever changing water channels. On each side of the 200 or 300 yard wide sandy creek bed there are approximately 15-20 foot banks that rise up to the surrounding land that was covered in large oak and pecan trees. This waterway can flood easily during wet seasons and almost dry up completely in the deep summer when it’s a dry year.
As a teenager my friends and I would spend a lot of time down there fishing and what not. I would drive my jeep on the sand and we swam in the larger pools etc… Occasionally we would see a small alligator or two. Lots of deer in the evenings and fun fishing for bass and bluegill. When the creek dried up the fish would get trapped in the deeper pools and get easier to catch.
When I was 19 or 20 years old in the late spring of 1987 I took a girl down to the creek for a picnic. We chose a spot near my favorite fishing pool that was near a big group of bushes to brake the wind. We had to cross a vast stretch of sand that was almost 75 yards across. This is loose white South Texas sand that’s up to a foot deep maybe even more. It is very difficult to walk through with each step shifting and moving out from beneath your feet.
We had our meal and it was starting to get dark so we started packing up. She needed to relive herself so she walked over behind a group of bushes, out of sight. I was gathering up the blanket when I heard a deep grunt that sounded like it was up on the bank to my left. There are cattle in the fields above the creek so I wrote it off as a bull making a noise. I called out to my date and told her I was going to take a load of our stuff to my jeep and come back for the rest. I started across the wide sand and I heard the grunt again as I caught movement coming off the high bank across the sand.
A dark colored bipedal creature burst out of the trees, flew down the bank and sprinted out across the wide sandy flat speeding effortlessly across the 75 yard deep sand perpendicular to me about 20 yards away. It was grunting as it exhaled and turned to look at me once as it came to the water. Without slowing down it gathered it’s steps and easily jumped maybe 10 or 12 feet across the water and up the opposite embankment disappearing into the trees. I froze in place with my arms full until I heard my date ask if that was a person running across the sand. She had seen it about halfway across the wide area.
There are many reasons I can tell you that there was no way this was a person. I would be happy to discuss on the phone if you are interested. Since that time I have been very interested in the subject and have been researching how this possible creature could survive in South Texas.

I’m starting to wonder if moving to Texas was such a good idea. 🙂

I lived in nachododes Texas (east Texas) I had a slaping on the side of trailer, about 1:00am~2:00am for a few weeks. I lived on the north side of town in a small trailer park (4 in total but 2 family’s) so shooting was not a oppision . I worked as a small engine mechanic so I brought home a chainsaw and kept it by my bed. Like clock work slapping on the side of trailer started and so did my saw.I stuck it out the window (it was summer and my widow was up we also had no screen). Needless to say it stopped

Wow, after our time in Germany, our next move will likely be Texas. San Antonio, more specifically! That would be awesome in a way, but I know I should be careful what I wish for!
