A listener writes “This is told to me by my cousin from Kentucky and happened around July of 1977:
My cousins lived in a deep hollow (holler) near Grapevine, Kentucky. She lived with her sister and mother about a quarter of a mile from her grandparents. One humid July night, she and her sister had to walk to her grandparent’s house and fearing copperhead snakes on the road after dark, they decided to walk the back trail that ran between the house. The houses were built no more than ten feet from the foot of a mountain and they were walking with the wooded mountainside on their right.
Halfway to their destination, they heard something in the woods above them. When they stopped, it stopped. When they stepped, it stepped. My younger cousin was frightened and couldn’t stand it anymore and ran as fast as she could to her grandfather’s home and left big sister behind, who, in her own words, was frozen in her tracks with fear. This thing didn’t make a sound and she tells me that it was bipedal. What seemed like hours later but was actually more like a minute my uncle, her grandfather, arrived along with my father and a handgun.
Both these men were rugged individuals who had hunted these mountains for years and had seen and heard every animal that resided there. When they got there my cousin was very relived to say the least and immediately got behind my father while my uncle readied his .44 magnum. My father yelled “Who’s out there? You better come on out!” There was no answer. Seconds later, the underbrush began to break as the thing began to climb up and away from them at a very fast pace. My uncle thought about letting a round off at the sound but feared that it could be a person but my cousin said no man could climb that hill that fast or that far without stopping to catch a breath!
They heard it top the ridge and go to back to the right into the deep timber. My cousin said from that point forward up until the time her grandparents passed away, she never walked that path after dark again. Thanks for reading, Wes!”
