What Roars Like A Lion In The Woods?

A listener writes ” First, I had an experience roughly 6 years ago, and that’s how I found your show. Love the show by the way. My family owns a 160 acre farm and I’m an avid archery hunter. I should say that I WAS an avid archery hunter with complete archery equipment. I don’t like to go in the woods any more because of this encounter. Prior to this experience I would hear strange noises while hunting that I could never explain.

The noises often would accompany a feeling of uneasiness, kind of like the feeling of being watched. I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods and have only had experiences on the family farm. My experience is that I was roared at.

A roar is the best description I can use, it was very deep sounding, close, and enormously loud. My nephew, age 12 or 13 at the time, was with me and experienced this with me. We both ran for our lives as soon as it happened. He was crying as we ran. Neither of us seen what roared. We were at the perimeter of the “farm yard” / the area that is mowed around the house and buildings. It was Easter and everyone was at the farm for the holiday, there’s roughly 30 family members that had gathered for the holiday. My nephew followed my around and I had let our two house dogs out to pee. One of the dogs likes to wonder the farm yard and chase farm cats. The dog had gone behind one of the buildings near the shelter-belt and we had gone to call him and we were near the shelter-belt when we were roared at. The dog tucked his tail and ran as fast as I’ve ever seen him run as well. The roar came from the shelter-belt.

Anyways, that’s my experience.”

Wow, did anyone else hear it that day? I wonder…
I too live on 160 acres of farmland with dogs, cats, chickens and rabbits that we keep within our 1 acre of fenced in yard around the house. We have strange visitors at night and sometimes they leave traces of their presence behind. This past summer/spring (2018), twice something or someone came up to our front porch and drank the sugar water from our hummingbird feeders. Whoever/whatever did this left them hanging, about 9’ from the ground, and was curtious enough to leave the caps unscrewed and placed nicely and directly below the feeders on the porch balcony railing.
We also have a metal sculpted, ornamental “gift” woven into the fence where we feed our horses behind the house. We have also witnessed many braids in our horses’ manes throughout the years. “They”, whoever they is, particularly liked our 25+ year old, blind, white mayor horse. She was very gentle in her last years and approachable and would have many of these braids in her mane at once. Last, our dog food and horse feed gets “dipped into” regularly which means we just have to buy it more often. This is definitely noticeable when you feed your animals every day and monitor how much “should be” left for them for the rest of the week. We keep their food in 50 gal trash cans with twist-on lids that are never left opened even after the “midnight visitors” have made their move. My mom says she hears them knocking on the barn when they are close to the house in the middle of the night and it keeps her awake out of fear.

It’s funny you mentioned the braiding, I didn’t know how people felt about that possibility. I had a 15 yr old Percheron (a draft rescue) and he took awhile to warm up to people. Twice I found odd braids in his mane….no ponytail holder needed. I always wondered who could have been around him and how they were able to braid him….very odd.

Yea the braids, some call “fairy braids”, aren’t the typical dreadlock/natural twists and knots that get formed. I think it’s definitely from someone or something else.

We have animals coming around our property off and on all night long. Sometimes the dogs go nuts barking and it gives me such a start. That would be so hair raising to hear a growl like that I cannot imagine how frightening.

I think the thing that was so strange to me is he was on a remote 250 acre farm roaming free. He wouldn’t have been in a situation (like a small pen) to be cornered by someone. No halter to grab onto so I’ve always been puzzled on how someone could have been way out there (for one) and how they caught him and got him to stand still lol!
