A listener writes “I have been putting this off for years now, but here it is, I don’t know what I’m getting into by doing this, but it happened, it’s bothered me for years, and though it’s not all that exciting, it had consequences for me.
I can’t think of everything at this moment, it literally causes stress when I try to go over it and over it, but here are the basic details.
It was summer 1998, sorry I can’t place the month. My girlfriend at the time and I were going to visit my Dad’s hometown Saint Ignace, Michigan drive north from there with completely inept plans to try to go to Isle Royale. We weren’t even sure if one could literally travel to Isle Royale, but we planned to camp and look for medicinal plants in parks along the way. This campground was on the way, just north of Saint Ignace.
We picked a spot in the back, it was a nice sunny day, no bad weather, and then left to go look for ginseng just up the road from this campground. We didn’t find ginseng, but we found Spikenard, a ginseng relative. We returned to the campground, hung out for a bit. Laughed and pulled a few things out of the car and talked. It was no more than 2:30/3:00 in the afternoon.
There was strangely nobody there at the campground except a trailer. This was mid summer, which is really weird. Anways, I began to feel really strange, like we were being watched, but the thing is, it kept getting worse and worse as the minutes passed. It got so bad that I felt we had to leave, but this made no sense to me. I was mad that I even felt like this. It was a perfect day, a sunny day, and nobody was there. But it kept getting weirder, a strange feeling. I eventually turned to my girlfriend and said “We need to leave” and she strangely looked at me without questioning it and said “I know.”
As I got stuff into the car and walked around the back to get over into the driver’s side, this feeling just got more and more intense, like ‘get out now’ ‘get the fu#@ out now.’ Literally second to second it was getting worse, and I got in and turned the ignition, and backed out, looked at my girlfriend who looked to be in shock, and I almost felt like I was going to lose consciousness, peripherally, because of looking over at the passenger side of the car, I saw this tall creature.
It was for a few seconds, we were getting out of there, so it was very brief, but I saw it, and I saw its head, shoulders, arms, didn’t see the feet, it was on a little bit of incline so the feet were not visible. What it appeared to be I don’t think my mind could handle at the time. It was tall, hairy, and somewhat balding on top of its head. It did not look like Patty from the Patterson Gimlin video but had a slight pointed top of head. The face I will never forget because it wasn’t an ape, it was not anything I have ever seen in any illustration, book cover or movie, it’s not what people seem to have made it out to look like. It was disturbing. It did look curious, but bizarre. Its hair was brown, its skin was like that of a chimp, I don’t know if people call that ‘caucasian’ skin, pink skin or what, but it was like light skinned undeneath the hair. It’s face was very peculiar, with peculiar wrinkles which is what I remember most. I didn’t say a word about this to anyone, not even my girlfriend at the time, but thought about it as we drove to Saint Ignace to get a motel. I was burying deep fast, I was astonished, and we spoke very little at all on the way to the motel.
Later the next week she told me she had nightmares about a hairy man coming after her, and I had nightmares.”
