A listener writes “I have held this story inside for over 30 years. I’ve mentioned it a couple times only to be laughed at.
Two of my encounters happened when I was around 12 or 13 years old while living with my dad and brother just south of Graham, WA back during the summer of 1985.
For a short time we lived in a 5th wheel at Rainer View Adult Rv Park and then my dad was able to get some land south of the Rv Park off of 304th St E. It was 5 acres of land that was heavily wooded with just a small clearing big enough fit the 5th wheel and deck attached and the drive way. The land around had some tall grass and was surrounded by pine forests. For two kids this was heaven. My dad had plans to build a house on the land.
While my dad was at work my brother and I stayed at home and we had complete run of the area. There were a couple houses built in the area but for the most part we were alone. The road to get to our place was a long gravel road.
The first encounter I had was one night we were having a bad storm hit the area, lots or rain, thunder and lightning. It was late at night and I was still awake listening to the thunder and rain and watching the sky light up. We had been living on this piece of land for maybe 5 months and I remember my dad moving the 5th wheel we were going to stay in until the house was built. I remember the care my dad took anchoring down the 5th wheel and making sure it was sturdy. Well this night as I said we were just getting hammered by a big storm. I was just about to fall asleep when all of a sudden I felt something hit the side of our camper so hard I rolled out of bed because the camper felt like it almost tipped onto its side. I screamed as did my little brother and I looked outside just as a flash of lightning flashed across the sky and I saw it run into the woods next to the camper. I told my dad and he told me to stop scaring my brother and it must have been a limb falling. I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.
The next morning my dad got up to look around and see if it was in fact a limb or limbs that had hit our camper. I followed him and saw them immediately. On the side of the camper were two huge dents about 4-5 feet apart and about 5-6 feet up from the ground. Whatever had hit/pushed the camper had done it with such force that the anchors from that side of the camper were ripped from the ground and the foundation some of the foundation blocks were broken. I pointed to the woods where I thought I saw something run back into telling my dad that’s where he went. My dad and I looked around for prints but due to the heavy rain we found nothing. My dad and I told my brother, who incidentally slept through the whole thing, that a couple tree limbs hit the camper once he saw the huge dents.
The first time I saw a Sasquatch was when my dad, brother and I were coming home from Tacoma. We turned on to the gravel road. It was really dark it was between 10-11 pm. I remember sitting in the front seat and looking ahead when I saw an eye shine ahead and to the right of the road. I told my dad that there was something on the side of the road and be careful it might be a deer. As we got closer I couldn’t keep my eyes off the set of reddish eyes staring at me. I told my dad to turn the on his high beams. When he did I saw something walk back into the trees. As I am writing this I feel the anxiety I felt then. I watched in amazement and in fear as we drove by where I saw the eye shine a large figure looking at me from inside the tree line. I didn’t see it clearly but I could see the silhouette as we drove by. It had to be roughly 7 to 8 feet tall. There was enough of light still as we drove by for me to see the eyes and I watched it blink. We pulled into our driveway and I ran into the 5th wheel and waited for my dad and brother came in. My dad asked me what was wrong. He could tell I was upset. My brother sat on his bed and listened to me tell my dad what I saw. My dad opened the door and walked out on the deck. I went to my brother and we held each other while we heard our dad talking to someone outside. We peaked out through the curtains and saw my dad smoking a cigarette and talking loud enough for us to hear him say something like we want no problems and please don’t hurt my boys. He came back in the trailer opened up a cupboard and took out this tube and walked back outside, then came back in and opened the frig and took out two grapefruits, a couple oranges and apples and went back outside. We followed him outside with a step stool and watched him as he put the fruit up on the base of an old bird feeder. This bird feeder was on a metal pole about 8-9 feet long and was fastened to the deck. We asked him what he was doing and he said he was letting them know we are here as friends and don’t want any problems. I told my dad that raccoons would get the fruit and he said they wouldn’t because he greased the pole. I walked over and touched the pole only to find just what my dad said was on there some grease.
My dad told us to wash up and get out pj’s on and we could sleep with him. Needless to say we didn’t fall asleep. Probably around 3-4 in the morning I was still up wide awake, my brother was sound asleep. For some reason I could hear everything. It felt like my hearing was so acute that I could probably hear worms crawling around, but at about 3-4 in the morning like I said I heard something outside the camper. I started to sit up and my dad’s arm came over and slowly laid me back down I looked over and he was wide awake. He looked at me and whispered its ok. And to be quiet. Then I heard this heavy footstep on the deck and then another then it sounded like it stepped back of the deck. I heard this grunt and a sound like something was sniffing the air. I laid there in terror. I reached down and grabbed my dad’s hand a squeezed it. I could hear whatever was out there for what seemed like forever before we realized the sun was coming up. I looked at the clock and it was 8 am or so and saw my brother was still asleep and my dad was as well. I crawled out of my dad’s bed and slowly walked to the door and turned the knob. I opened the door and from the door I could see the fruit was gone. I grabbed the step stool and placed it by the pole and climbed up to find a handful of blackberries. I woke my dad up and showed him and he noticed that something had run a finger down the pole as to see what was on it.
From that day on I never saw another one but I knew it was around. We would find signs it was around like stuff we put on top of the pole was gone, while we were clearing brush around an area we were going to build our house we had piles of stuff lying around like limbs, logs and brush and a couple times we would find piles moved to an area that we had been putting it to burn it or use the wood as fire wood. My dad would always turn to the woods and smile then tap his chest, say thank you and before he went to bed, would always put something out for it or them.
In October that same year my dad was involved in a serious car accident that forced us to move back into the city so he could receive care. October 25, 1985 was the last time I laid eyes on that land.
I was curious to see what it looked like today so I looked on google maps and found that the whole area have completely changed. No more are the thick pine forests around the area I once played in. It amazes me how much things have changed in 33 years. The only thing that remains the same are the vivid memories I have of those to encounters as a small boy.
Since then I have lost my dad and little brother but I know what we saw or heard at different times when we lived there.”

I really enjoyed this and thank you for sharing some good but scary memories. Your dad sounds like he was a really cool guy and seemed to know how to handle the situation in a way that kept things neighborly in your little part of the world.

I live about a mile from that rv park and 4 miles from 304th. My wife never really believed all of this until about 8years ago when she heard a howl in the middle of the day from inside our house with her hair dryer running. She knew immediately what it was. Graham is also where Will Jevning had his sighting as a kid. Just saying…..

I too lived in graham. Lots kids in High School shared their encounters or their families encounters. In fact one friend heard one recently.

It seems like ur father diffused a potentially unfortunate outcome by practicing kindness & respect. It’s amazing how the creature(s) left berries in return & moved some pieces of wood around to help ur Dad! We’d welcome ur story on the show!

I have heard a few stories that are similar to this. Very cool of Dad to realize what was taking place and then taking steps to insure that harmony between humans and Sasquatches can be achieved. I wonder how he knew, I will bet he had earlier experiences from past years. A lady in the Manistee National Forest of Western Michigan used blueberry muffins. She said they loved them as do I. I just ate one thanks to my wife. I hope this person comes on the show. What an experience.

Thank you for telling us about your experience s. I was just up in Lakewood and Tacoma last weekend after being away for nine years. It is so incredibly built up in just that time, under a decade!
Joint base LM is so surrounded by humanity I wonder if the sasquatch that used to be there are pushed out!

Wow… I can’t wait to hear the encounter. Sorry to hear that you lost the family members.

Being only 12 or 13 and having such traumatic things happen to you, you have to wonder, how much of an effect did it have on you after those experiences as you grew through the years, and how much of a factor was it in shaping who you’ve become? Something I’ve always wondered, how these intense encounters affect kids long term.

I know the area too and watched the changes through development. I’m looking fwd to hearing this episode.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sorry about your dad, I’m sure it’s hard for you to know his dream never came true. He obviously was a very smart dad and loved his boys. God Bless…
