Turkey sound became more of a growl

A listener writes “Hello Wes, so something about your newest episode instantly drew my attention….and that was when the speaker spoke about knowing someone was imitating an owl.

I heard something very similar to this back in November of 2017 while deer hunting. I never actually saw anything but I heard something and couldn’t have been more than 50 feet away from where whatever was making these noises.

So I usually start my story by talking about how I met another hunting coming out of my grams property, the only other hunter who ever hunts up there, and he was spooked. He told me that he had been sitting behind a large Boulder when a bobcat ran through the woods and jumped over the rock, over himself, and continued off into the woods.

Now I didn’t think much of this and as I’m not much of a sitter, I was going to continue up the old road and see if I could see anything.

I had met the hubter on a hill, just below a clearing my family calls the “Petty Mown” and once I had reached that area, at the top of the hill, I started hearing what sounded like someone trying to imitate a Turkey, I could tell they were trying to sound like a Turkey but it definitely wasn’t a Turkey.
Me and my brother in law stopped and listened, wondering what the hell that sound was and after it didn’t stop, we kept walking.

Long story short, as we got closer to where the sound was coming from, a thick stand of tightly grown saplings, the Turkey sound became more of a growl until it was no longer a Turkey call but a true growl.

This was when we stopped and a weird, fear set in. Suddenly we head a bang….bang bang……bang, coming from behind where the calls were coming from. It sounded like a clear tv style wood knock and at this point I knew something was off. This was either an outer stater, hunting on my grandparents land from the development further up the Mnt, who had a death wish, or this was a a monster. I could have just shot, blindly I to the brush and killed whatever was there but even with my 35 rem and 45 sidearm, I was Scared.

We back out of the area slowly and left the Mt. I went back 2 or 3 months later, and a deer had been killed in the same area. I saw no carcass, just lots of blood and hair, also drag marks. Just drops of blood here and there that led further up the Mt. There was also a huge pile of what I thought could have shit in the middle of the path and when I huge I mean like 3 feet long stretch of something. I have tons of pictures: video of this.”

Wild ? Yes. But very Scary!! I was thinking, I’d follow those drag marks up the mountain but (as I sit behind my laptop screen) I thought better of it and chickened out..I lived thru a years worth of Cancer I’m quite sure I wouldn’t live through that encounter..
