This scream was directed at us

A listener writes “Hello Wes, I’m emailing you about an encounter I had this morning while turkey hunting in the Penn Mountain State Forest in northern New York.

My family owns a camp up there, and this weekend is always our big turkey hunting trip. My cousin and I decided to go sit for an hour in an area that has always felt a little off. There’s a long history of strange experiences there honestly, my cousin could probably tell those stories better than I can, so I’ll save that for now.

We parked the truck around 7:15 a.m., and right away both of us had that unmistakable feeling that something wasn’t right. I only had a video camera with me because I shot a bird yesterday, and my cousin was carrying a single-shot .410.

We walked maybe 150 yards into the woods to where we planned to set up. About five minutes later, we heard a scream/yell that I genuinely can’t explain. It sounded like it was directed at us and came from the area where we had parked the truck.

The second we heard it, we both stood up. I don’t know if it was some kind of infrasound effect or just pure instinct, but both of us started shaking, and I felt a level of fear I’ve honestly never experienced before.

I turned on my video camera, hoping the “cameraman never dies” theory might work in our favor, and we made our way back to the truck.

I understand that, on paper, it probably doesn’t sound like much happened. But considering the history we’ve had in that area my dad was actually on your show around 2019 talking about a tree-knock encounter there, and my cousin had a sighting in the same area last year I really believe we experienced something unexplainable.

For context, I spent five years serving on submarines, and my cousin is an Army infantry veteran. Whatever made that yell turned both of us into a couple of bitches.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.”
