There it stood, looking into the house over the deck

A listener writes “I have listened to you for two years, while I do janitorial work at night and listen on my phone. So in 1982 in Catawba County NC on Molly’s Backbone rd., the house that we lived in was on Lake Norman and it was very isolated then, not now, there was an 11 hundred acre game land beside of us.

The end of our house had four large windows overlooking the lake and the deck that was 8 ft. off of the ground. My chore was to go downstairs and lock the sliding glass door in the basement. This door is located underneath the windows and deck. We locked it by sticking a wooden stick in the track so the door could not be slid open at night. It was one night in February at about 10:30 at night, and I was a lazy kid so I waited until right before bed to go down and lock the door. The basement stairs were directly in front of the sliding glass door and I did not turn lights on because it was not far to the door from the stairs. I walked over to the door and bent over to put the stick in the door while happening to look out. And there it stood, looking into the house over the deck. You were talking in ep. 434 about eye shine, well this things eyes were glowing red, for years I thought it was a reflection from inside of the house. It didn’t look at me, but it was 6 ft. from me and it had a face like the old aborigine man in Quigley Down Under, if you saw the movie.

I ran upstairs to get dad and he came down the stairs with me behind him. He opened the door to the basement and looked out towards the sliding glass door as I was looking over him three stairs up. When he flipped the light on, this thing had walked over to the sliding glass door and was bent over looking in. After light flipped on this thing jumped back or moved and my dad turned around and slammed the door and drug me back up the steps. He went and got the shot gun from the closet and we both went on the deck. You could hear this thing walking in the fall leaves towards the game land. That is the story that changed my life as far as going out in the wood or even going out at night. I have told family and friends and they make fun of me and laugh and I just tell them there is a monster out there and I have seen it.

So when I come home at night, I am a 51 year old man, but I still run to the door and get it unlocked to get in. Dad had always said that it was a neighbor been a peeping tom, but we moved out of the house without selling it only two weeks later and moved into an apartment. That home was supposed to be my dad’s retirement home on the lake. I guess mom would not stay there during the day by herself unless they had saw something else and did not tell us. Also I was in the boy scouts and had to quit for fear of the woods.

I could see how that ruined your camping for ever! And I think your probably right about your parents seeing something too or they would not have moved so fast. Thanks for telling your encounter here.

I’m curious, is your pop still alive, if so, do you ever talk about it with him, and if not, was it ever discussed between you two years later when you grew up?

There had to be at least a little ambient light or he would not have seen the animal at all.
Are their eyes that evolved for nocturnalism they concentrate even the smallest light to the point their eyes appear to glow?

    Hello,

I’d like to hear the story from you. I suppose it would be difficult to talk about. But maybe it’ll help you feel better.
