A listener writes “I work the oil fields in North Dakota and for the past couple years your show has got me through a lot of long nights, but I am writing about strange series of events that happened on and around our farm back home in Illinois from about the fall of 2008 to 2010. I guess the first thing was when I had a good friend move to the area from the city and wanted to get into bow hunting, so I had him come out for the weekend, after a couple of day’s showing him around the farm one evening we decided to go hang a climber stand on the edge of a field where one of my better spots was located, the idea being that I would be close to him maybe 30 yards and we would hunt together so about 8:00 pm that night we went up the hill behind the house to put the stand up.
Now before I get to far ahead a couple things here one is that he had very little if any knowledge of the wildlife, and this part of northern or NW IL the galena area is lead mine country back in the civil war days, so the mines consist of like ditches maybe 8-10 feet deep and however long that would follow a vein just give you an idea. So we headed up on a 4 wheeler and started sawing branches and hanging the climber. I was about 10 feet up in the tree with the climber getting it ready for the morning when Brian said hey look there’s a couple of coon as he had his flashlight pointed,
He wanted to shoot everything, when I looked over what I saw was two red eyes about 4 to 5 inches apart, and I freaked out telling him that wasn’t two anything if it was there would be four eye balls and sometimes we get wolves down from the WI border. It was very low to the ground also and coon wouldn’t be like that for very long till they took to tree with people around. I got a very bad feeling and quickly got the climber down and started the 4 wheeler and told him to get on, and we hauled ass out of there. So the next morning we went to a different spot but later we went back there and I noticed the area that was at was on the edge of one of the mines or ditch we called maybe 50 yards from us and I never hunted that area the rest of the season just felt weird, Now fast forward to the end of season I always started shed hunting for antlers about late December and while walking that area I found a huge buck dead in the bottom of that ditch been dead a long time almost nothing left and was able to see the struggle and how he was taken of course I was thinking coyote’s had got him but then I thought of that night and what happened, and I know it could have been a wolf but the way it just starred at us with all the commotion and the flashlight a wolf wouldn’t stay and not move being shined like that.
So that would be #1 and the following year we had a group hunt with a bunch of guy’s all out in different areas for evening hunt when right at last light I mean the best possible time is the last 10 min of light when the nice bucks like to come out I heard this man scream like he was hurt, and I keept thinking someone fell out of their stand or something, so I got out and started for my brother in law’s stand witch pissed him off wondering why I would leave early like that when I told him he thought I was crazy, and back at the barn everyone that was out showed up just fine and said they didn’t hear anything so that always stuck in my head also. A few weeks later I had asked a neighboring land owner if I could hunt the bluff over his property, and He say’s and I quote “sure I don’t care but be careful there is something on two legs back there” I was like WTF and didn’t think much of it he said he has seen something more than once and it had matted fur or hair looked dirty and was walking on two legs like a man but was no man. I really wanted that spot it was good hunting so I hung my stands anyway and never really had anything happen but I definitely had a weird feeling in there and never hunted at night that was always my morning spot. I am heading back home here in a week and plan on taking some pics of these areas for you, and my best friends hog farm also I should mention and the spot we dead pigs out is right before the bluff the pictures will make more sense of that area. So Wes not a real sighing I guess, but strange to say the least thank’s for the show and keep up the good work.”

Well I can relate to that story as I hunt in Illinois.
My all time fav place to hunt is in the strip mines during the rut. Its an ugly place but you never see other people there and bucks act like normal cause they don’t run into people in there.
I have had lots of weird things go on in that place over a 7 year period. Trail Cameras smashed on trees, Strange strings tied across
the entrance of a spoil?? deer that were shot thru both lungs and should be dead never to be found.
One friend of mine had something follow him out of the woods 2 nights in a row. real strange as people don’t go in there and yotes run for the hills.
I could go on but don’t want to put to much on here. this took place in western Illinois in Fulton county.

Patrick what I described happened in Illinois to me and my friends. I shot what I know was a clean 200 inch 6×6 there in 2006. Bad blue tongue came thr6u the area and whiped out most of the deer herd. While looking for that big buck I covered a lot of ground and saw ground you could hide 100 white elephants in. The area is not traveled much and Illinois has timber…more than you think. The bfro website has sighting reports in the area I was in.
