The Sound Was Incredibly Powerful

A listener writes “Hi, and thank you for your podcast. Last month, December 17, 2020, late afternoon I was deer hunting with a friend of mine who’s a game biologist.

We were on my hunting club which is situated between the Mississippi River and the Mississippi River levee. We were hunting 100 yards apart in a remote part of the club. We both were facing East, into the wind.

We had not seen any deer all afternoon when we both heard a deep, 2 second roar from behind us, within 100 or 150 yards straight downwind of me. The sound was incredibly powerful, like it came from huge lungs. No coyote, for sure. These roars continued for about 10 minutes, every 20 seconds or so. Each roar was very deep pitched and lasted a couple of seconds. The creature roamed north and south, always just out of sight, always 100 of 150 yards behind us. We never heard brush breaking, tho it seemed as if we should have. Eventually it left, traveling south, judging from the roars which occurred more sporadically as it left.

My hunting buddy and I have 75 years hunting experience between us, mostly in Mississippi. But neither of us had ever heard this sound before. We were intimidated enough that we left early.

We talked. There are occasional black bears around. But it was cold weather (hibernation weather), plus it was DIRECTLY downwind of us. No bear is going to hang around sniffing human beings. Same with a boar hog, which are also sometimes present. I’ve heard a bull alligator roar and this was different, and again, the weather was in the 40s- hibernation weather.
This is within a couple miles of a “Bigfoot caught on cellphone” kind of video on YouTube-6 miles west of tunica, ms. There are Miles of bottomland timber between where we were and the river.

Do you get reports of a Sasquatch making sounds like this? It was not a Sierra or Ohio kind of noise. I’m curious. Not afraid, but intrigued. It certainly seemed like an intimidation behavior to us. I’d appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.”

Kinda of a jaw-dropper when it happens to YOU! I’ve heard these creatures while hunting and the sounds they make are not made by a North American animal. Kinda of rocks your world, but it’s nothing new…if you’re in the know.
