The Giant Monster “Shampe”

Sometimes it is important to look at native tradition when trying to gather information about these creatures. I found this article written by Kyle Thompson  and wanted to share it.

All of the evil spirits of the Choctaws have followed them on their long journey from the western part of North America. The witches, demons, and the monsters came with the Choctaw people.

But the most horrible frightening of all these beasts is the hideous monster the Choctaws call the “Shampe.”

A Shampe is a giant in the form ugliest Choctaw beast.

swampee

He lives in the deepest part of the woods. So far in the forest that no Choctaw has even been able to find the location of his huge, dark cave. The Shampe cannot stand the brightness of the sun or the open air.

The smell of blood will attract him and he will follow the person who has been hunting and carrying a wounded game. Shampes do not have very good vision but have a keen sense of smell. They can track any person or animal.

The Shampes make a whistling noise as he stalks through the forest. His scent is so terrible, that many people have died from his odour. While he looks like a gigantic form of Choctaw, she smells like a skunk. Some of them are really hairy like an ape while others are hairless. The Choctaws won’t live in an area where a Shampe will live or has been spotted. The Choctaws will often be caught or chased by a Shampe. If someone were to drop a small game such as a rabbit or a squirrel, the Shampe stops to eat it and may be drawn off your trail by the blood of the small animal.

Shampes have followed the Choctaw people along their journey from the western United States. They say that all Shampe have returned to the west now. But today, some Choctaws still hear whistling sounds in the woods and catch a strong odour. The Choctaws still drop small animals when they think a Shampe is near. You may never know that all Shampes have returned to the west.

Someday, all truth will be revealed. Many mysteries of this old earth will be put to rest. You know my opinion on this subject, and again, go back to Genesis, and the book of Enoch.

…And you could go to the fossil record, which really is a pretty neat progression from one-celled organisms to apes (including us) and other large-brained species. Not that these two sources (fossils and the Bible) necessarily contradict each other. With all the hominids paleontology has shown us, why not another concurrent with us? I mean, we don’t kill off EVERYTHING.

Ok, after reading that, I just had to go in and correct it. Here is the corrected version with proper tense, adjectives, adverbs, and… uh… geography…

Sometimes it is important to look at native tradition when trying to gather information about these creatures. I found this article written by Kyle Thompson and wanted to share it.

All of the evil spirits of the Choctaw have followed them on their long journey from the Southeastern part of North America. This includes all of their witches, demons, and the monsters. The most horrible and frightening of all these beasts is the hideous monster the Choctaw call the “Shampe.” The Shampe are giant beasts in the form of the ugliest Choctaw (human).

They live in the deepest part of the forests. So deep in the forest that no Choctaw has even been able to find the location of their huge, dark caves The Shampe cannot stand the brightness of the sun or wide open spaces. The smell of blood will attract them, and they are known to follow a person who has been hunting and/or carrying a wounded animal. The Shampe do not have very good vision; however, they has a keen sense of smell. They can track any person or animal.

The Shampe often make a whistling noise as they stalk through the forest. Their smell is so terrible, that many Choctaw have died from the odor. While they look like a gigantic form of Choctaw, they smell like a skunk. Some of them are really hairy like an ape, while others are hairless. The Choctaws won’t live in an area where a Shampe will live or has been spotted. The Choctaw will often be caught or chased by a Shampe. If someone were to drop a small animal, such as a rabbit or a squirrel, the Shampe will often stop to eat it. Shampe may be drawn off the trail by the blood of the small animal.

Shampe have followed the Choctaw along their journey from the Southeastern United States. They say that most all Shampe have returned to the Southeast now. However, some Choctaws still hear the whistling sounds in the woods and catch a strong odor. The Choctaw still drop small animals when they think a Shampe is near. You may never know that all Shampe have returned to the Southeast.

When I attend tribal ceremonials I have heard from the Hochunk tribal members( a Wisconsin based tribe ) that the are forbidden to whistle at night. I ask them how come and they avert Thier eyes and reply that it attracts evil spirits. If u hear whistling at night you should get indoors or avoid the area where it was heard or comming from . Kinda hinky ay?

I am suprised they answered my question. As this isn’t supposed to be talked about much. I think they took pity on me because of my ignorance reguarding this “taboo” subject. They went so far as to say talking about the hairy men could bring them around. An extremely tight lipped subject. Anyone hear similar reactions from other tribes ?

I am assuming that everyone hear understands that the Choctaw were among the tribes forced on the “Trail of Tears” from the southeast to Oklahoma territory.
