In the late 19th and early 20th century, here are reports of the wild man or Sasquatch wearing clothes. Most of the clothes were ripped and appeared to be stolen from locals clotheslines. There have been reports from eyewitnesses of seeing the creature take clothes. The report of the “flannel-shirted Sasquatch” comes from the Pacific NW. This incident was reported in the early 10th century.
A young girl was walking across a meadow near the edge of a dense stand of fir trees. The grass was high, and the forest beyond looked dark and cool compared to the open field.
As she crossed the clearing, she noticed movement near the tree line.
At first she assumed it was a man. The figure was upright and broad-shouldered, standing partially concealed among the shadows. But something seemed wrong. The proportions looked strange too tall, too massive.
The figure stepped forward.
The girl later described it as covered in dark hair from head to foot. Yet over the hair, it appeared to be wearing a faded red and black flannel shirt. The garment hung loosely from its huge frame, torn in places and dirty from long use. Some versions say the sleeves were ripped away; others describe the shirt as hanging open like a ragged coat.
The creature stood silently watching her.
For a moment neither moved.
The girl stared, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. It looked neither fully human nor fully animal. The flannel shirt made the sight even more unsettling. Had it stolen the garment? Was it a man living wild in the woods? Or something else entirely?
Then the figure shifted its weight and took a step toward the meadow.
That was enough. The girl turned and ran, racing back toward home without looking behind her. By the time adults returned to investigate, the clearing was empty. Only the forest remained, still and quiet.
It is one of the stranger Sasquatch encounters on record, not because of the creature’s size or hairiness, but because of the shirt. The image of a gigantic hairy being standing at the forest edge in a tattered flannel became one of those odd details that lingered in memory, making the account difficult to forget.
