The Dewey Lake Monster

A listener writes “This encounter occurred on my family farm here in southwest Michigan, Cass County, and I will add this county is home to a pretty famous legend, the Dewey Lake Monster, but had no idea about that until years later.

I was a teenager in the early 90’s when this occurred, our farm was about 400 acres with farm fields, woods, swamps as well as a creek that ran through much of the property. This happened late summer/early fall, if I remember right, but I spent quite a bit of time outdoors and just walking and exploring in the woods. I walked back to a fairly large Pond that we had a quarter mile back behind our house that was used for irrigation and went into wooded area near there, my dad had different paths and trails he cleared that that lead to different little areas to camp. I walked back to one of these sites, when all of a sudden, I heard a loud movement of something big behind me running, it literally remember it raising the hairs on my arm because it was moving so fast and as it ran, vibrated the ground around me.

I looked back and all around me, but didn’t see anything, and whatever it was must have stopped or slowed down because it lasted probably about 10 seconds, then I didn’t hear anything. My first thought was this was a deer, but the way I felt the movement on the ground from this thing, it would have had to of been the biggest buck in Michigan. I just turned around and ran out of the trail back towards the house and as I approached the back side of our barn and was walking towards the back door, I hear the loudest roar/scream I have ever heard. I look in the direction of the noise and right in front of me, across the street, standing at the edge of one of our other fields near the wood line was large upright/black figure. I couldn’t make out really any details as where it was standing was about 200 yards away, but even at that distance, I could tell it was big, 8 to 9ft tall, if I were to guess. I will never forget how loud the scream was and as it was screaming the head was a little tilted back and looking in my direction.

I remember just running to the back door into the house because I knew my dad was inside watching tv. When I got inside I asked him “did you hear that”, and he said “what”, so I told him what I heard and saw, but when we looked out the front window, it was gone. My dad told me that he thought he heard something, but the tv volume was up really high so he didn’t hear it that well. I wish now that I would have walked out to that area of the field later or the day after to see if I saw anything, but being a kid I wasn’t thinking like that and my dad and I never discussed it again. I was aware of Bigfoot back then, even remember in our old elementary geography books, the section about the Pacific Northwest had a picture of the Patterson/Gimlin film, but never thought they were around here. We also, around the same timeframe had a collie, family dog, go missing and I now think this could be the reason why. I don’t know if what I saw is what people in the area have called the Dewey Lake Monster, but there have been some recorded sightings by people very close to where this all happened. Thanks for listening and keep doing what your doing.”

Thanks for sharing. I met and kind of interviewed, a person who was one of my customers, in SW Michigan. He had found some big footprints hunting deer. Well, he was sure no other human, had been where he found the footprints. They were fresh, in very terrible weather. 17 inches long. Not a bear. Not a human. No one could have hoaxed on this land. He didn’t believe in Bigfoot, until he found these footprints. If you look at the SW Michigan area, you will find a lot of rolling hills, and pretty forested areas. Lots of farms. I think Bigfoot is in this area, and always has been. If you look up and research the area, there is more than most would think. Thanks.
