Strange Sounds From Mt. Hood

A listener writes “I just discovered you podcast, which I really enjoy. Thanks for the great show!

I thought I would tell you about an experience I had a few years ago, in hopes that you might be able to tell me if others have told you similar things.

This event happened a few years ago, on the late night of August 20th, 2017 in Oregon at the base of Mt. Hood. My family and I were camping up there because the next day was a full solar eclipse, a very rare occurrence, and in this spot we could view the totality of the eclipse.

Late that night before the day of the eclipse, I heard, from my tent, the sound of a heavy creature walking around our campsite. The steps were loud thuds, and were paced in such a way that it sounded like a large, heavy creature on two feet.

Coinciding with this walking noise, I heard a very strange noise which neither me, nor my highly skeptical father (who is an expert animal tracker), have ever heard.

The noise sounded like a heavy grunt of a bear, yet at the same time, it had a metallic quality to it. Like the sound of scraping a washboard, or the rattling of a metal gate. Hearing the sound repeatedly that night, and from different places in a circle around our camp, the only mental image was of a bear with a metal head. I know that sounds weird but that’s the only way I can describe it.

In the morning, my father said he heard it too and he describes it in the same way. As a loud grunt with a rattling metallic quality.

It’s also worth noting that while this was happening, I felt immense fear. Maybe that’s just because of the uncertainty of what I was hearing, but part of me felt like whatever was out there, was emanating a very frightening energy.

Have you ever received any reports of noises like this? I would be very interested to hear your response.

Thank you,”

I’ve heard on your podcast stories of people hearing the metallic sound at the same time they are hearing the heavy foot falls of a bipedal being. This is when I wonder if sasquatch is also an alien because I do believe there are different types of sasquatch. Thanks, Wes, and it would be interesting to hear this listener’s story even if it was a short story.

It’s my understanding that the Portland Symphony Orchestra occasionally take their seasonal retreats from rehearsals out to Mt. Hood and then ‘cut loose’ into the bush with an odd-relic collection of woodblocks, kazoos and didgeridoos. Those would be pretty strange sounds.

I have wondered if the night time air at a certain temperature and humidity is utilized by Sasquatch for communicating in this medium… perhaps sound travels in a similar manner as over a cool lake before dawn. The howls or deep growl noise(s) and huffing and puffing I have heard outside a tent in Northern Oregon have all been between 2-5 am and seem to resonate through the forest as if “metallic” & wave-influenced… (think of metallic boat noises Underwater or humpbacks). Perhaps siren-like howls & whoops are also a echolocation vocalization that can help with familiarizing the caller with topography ahead!

We had this EXACT experience.. TWICE! This same sound in the same place, same time of year. Both times we were camping in the wilderness around Trillium Lake. We heard a strange grunt/growl that was somewhat similar to a bear but also very different. Started as one and then had multiple just out of sight circling our camp. We all felt a deep anxiety type of fear. It went on for a long time. Our first time hearing this was a little over three years ago 2019/2020. Heard it again the next year less than a mile from the first time. We have been looking since for someone who has heard this or can corroborate it. We’d love to connect about this!
