Strange Sound From The Woods

A listener writes “(Location NW Louisiana) (Time Frame: Fall of 1990 or 1991). I believe I was probably in 8th or 9th grade at the time in high school or around that time period when this experience happened.

My family (great aunt and uncle) had wooded property in the country, outside of the small town I grew up in – probably a 15 minute drive from our home at the time. My father and I would sometimes go deer hunting on this property in the late afternoon after he returned home from work. When we would hunt, we would park at my great aunt’s home. Directly behind her home was a field that was probably around an 85 yard distance between the house/road and the wood line. On this particular afternoon, my father and I parked at my great aunt’s home, got our firearms out of the truck and started our walk across this field, headed back toward the wood line. Once my father and I were about half-way across the field, a sound came out of the wood line that I had never heard before and it instantly stopped both of us in our tracks.

The sound was so loud that it literally caused birds in the tree tops in the wood line to fly off. The only way I can describe this sound, is that it was a scream/roar that lasted maybe 10 seconds and you could almost feel it in your body. I have described it people like this. Have you ever been at a zoo near the big cat exhibit and you hear a lion roar or make vocalizations, you can almost feel it in your body even though you are not directly by the lion enclosure – it was similar to that. After a brief silence between my dad and me, I asked my dad what that could have been and he said it was probably a cow back in the woods just bellowing. We both knew that wasn’t the case and I told him so, but I think he just said that so that I would not be freaked out and maybe to calm his nerves as well. We waited a few minutes, composed ourselves and eventually worked our way into the woods to hunt, but needless to say we were out of the woods before dark that day. We did not experience any other strange activity that day while hunting but it did put in my mind that there was something in the woods out in that area that I could not explain.”

I wonder if Sasquatch has some kind of vocal cord adaptation that enables it to roar, like the 4 big cats. Only lions, tiger, leopards, and jaguars can roar because they have a special adaptation in their larynx. Does this mean that Sasquatch has it too? I wonder.
