Strange night as a wildland firefighter

A listener writes “Hi, Wes So let me start by saying I am a 58 yo wildland firefighter and have been in this job for almost 18 years. I am a trained observer and not given to imagination.

Ive spent countless hours days and even weeks in some of the most remote locations fron the east coast to North pole Alaska. To be clear I saw nothing during my encounter but only because I refused to come out of where I was hiding. It is a rather long story and I am not the best email guy so ill give you the short version I was part of a medical unit on a fire in Oregon near yukia, in a place called moon medow.

I was assigned to the night shift during a burn out operation.I was stationed on a ridge opposite of the area where the burn was going to occur to act as a lookout and to maintsin a position which would allow me quick access in the event of a injury. I wedged myself into a rock outcropping being mindful of cougars as one was encountered the previous day in broad daylight. I figured at least I would see them coming.

The operation proceeded into the night. In the hours shortly after 2am I began to hear a sound I can only describe as wind chimes .not giving it second thought. Then as I sat there I realized I was feeling as well as hearing the sound. It was totally silent except for the sound which became almost deafening my level of fear rose exponentially. Then I heard it, it was huge I could feel the ground moving. It walked around through the brush. I was frozen through I felt the urge to run I was not about to break my cover. I dont know why but I know it knew I was there. The radio was silent during this time another thing i cant explain.

I swear it wanted me to come out. Why I dont know. Wes this was no bear. I’ve listened to your show for a long time and an a recent subscriber and dont recall hearing any encounter like this. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated. Upon returning to camp, I spoke to a native american friend and he explained simply as the forest giants.”

I was on the bull fire just south of ukia back in 96. They had us spiked out on a ridge with the John day river at the bottom of said ridge. We were there for about a week and the first night our left over food disappeared. It was in bear buckets (buckets that are airtight and need thumbs to open) and we found one bucket later that didn’t have any claw marks on it. Towards the end all of us saw big hairy at least once, including our government liasson. We had a crew from northway Alaska working the next section of trail. I don’t know if they saw anything, but I imagine they would have.
