Strange Howls From Otisfield, ME 9/20/27

A listener writes “I recently had a vocal encounter in what I’ve since discovered in an area that has several documented encounters nearby. I went on a girl’s trip to my sister’s cabin in Otisfield, Maine a couple weeks ago and heard what we think was close to “Ohio howls”, Saturday July 20, 2024.

I’m from Central Florida on the coast. Where we go camping it is not very remote, and I’ve probably only been camping a dozen times in my life. I don’t know a lot about the outdoors the sounds, other than birds. But, my oldest sister, “S” – 70, has been camping since she was a teenager. That’s where they would go out, get high and live their best life in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. LoL. All that to say she knows the forest and it’s sounds, at least those in the Allegheny national forest north of Pittsburgh. But far more than me and my other 3 other sisters combined.

We were at my sister, “A’s”, cabin in Otisfield, Maine. There are several homes right in the pond. Some closer to one another than others. We arrived Thursday 7/18, yucking it up, laughing so loudly that I was certain people across the pond were getting irritated. But if they were, we never heard from anyone.

Friday the plan was to go for a hike aprox 20 miles south/east. I was hungover and frankly, needed some QT and a nap. I was thinking it would be a good opportunity to possibly see or encounter some kind of a bigfoot situation. But my hangover won and I passed. When they got back, “A” showed me a photo of a stick structure they came across.

You can see that the structure looks really organized. It’s in a preserve area, but it’s not on a path, but it is near one, so there’s no way of telling if people did or didn’t walk off the path to make this structure, it’s just a weird thing she saw Friday. She never did tell me if she had ever seen anything like that before out there .But I’m guessing not since she made a big deal about photographing it and showing it to me.

So the next day, Saturday, the day of the encounter, the pond had weirdly low activity with only one pontoon boat and tubers out for a couple hours. “A”, the sister that lives there, commented how weird it was on such a beautiful day that there weren’t more people out on the pond. Nothing weird happened at all, just a gorgeous, fun day with four of my favorite people.

My eldest sister and I decided we needed a fire for last night. We started making it early, like 3pm. The others wrapped up hanging by the pond and pulling things together to grill burgers. We wrapped dinner, grabbed drinks and seats by the fire. Around 9pm “A’s” husband called and she went inside. At about that exact time , sister “M” asked us to stop talking and listen. We did and heard the tail end of what sounded like an “Ohio howl” . So, how long was it for her to hear it and us to shut up and still hear the end of it? I’m guessing 20-30 seconds. We heard this howl 3 more times same intensity and duration. We were all floored. Each of us trying to offer ideas of what it could be. It was not coyotes there was no yipping before or after. Fishercat? but it was too long and too loud for it to be a small animal with small lungs. We all Listen to the sounds of a fisher cat. And we agreed that it was not that.

I was facing due east and my estimation is the sounds came from the South and slightly east. I conferred with the other girls and they all agreed. And that it came from about 1- miles away. Here are the comments from the three that were at the fire with me:
Sister 1 “S” – Who has camped from her late teens through her sixties, said this about the “Ohio howl” in comparison to what she heard:
…pitch seems just a bit lower, but definitely similar length & intensity. She agreed that something to make that’s long of a sound at the the volume that it reaching us from an estimated 1-3 miles away at had to be bigger than a wolf or even a bear. Not that it, they sounded like either one of those.

Sister 2 “M: – I don’t recall it being as a long as these ones are. And I thought what we heard actually had a higher pitch?
This is the sister that noticed the howling. To begin with. She has spent practically no time in the woods.

Sister 3 “A” – on the phone

Sister 4 “L” – I did think it sounded like more of a howl and this sounds like a siren. But I remember one of you saying sounded like a siren.

We all also agreed that there was no yipping up to a climax of a sound like if it were coyotes .

We didn’t feel fearful, maybe it was the drinks or whatnot. But once it stopped we went back to talking and stayed out for an hour or so more.

I didn’t want to submit to BFRO bcs I don’t want anyone going out there and stirring things up. It’s not my neighborhood or property and if the people there aren’t talking about it then that’s their wishes. Neither my sister nor her husband said they’ve heard anything like the Ohio Howl or anything strange there before. They have owned and had a cabin there for over 20 years. They have grown children that have also been out there with the family and have since gone up there as adults. But none of them have said they have seen or heard anything weird. I will note at the HOA meeting for the Pond residents it was noted that there is a newly discovered bear in the area. I guess a neighbor said it got into theri bird feeders.”

    Hello, “L”,
I liked your story and how you told it: well written and yet folksy.

I am always struck by the fact that certain people can spend their whole lives in the woods and never see or hear a sign or sighting of bigfoot. Their attitude is, “If they existed, I’d (or someone I know would) have seen one”.

But then, when I am out in nature, it also strikes me how easily missed an actual sasquatch, laying low, truly would be. Ditto footprints or other signs….One could be behind a tree 50 feet away and it would only register as a shadow, if I even happened to look in that direction. There could be a footprint ten feet over from where I happen to be bushwhacking. And we’re talking about very intelligent beings who are extremely aware of any humans in their vicinity, and generally seem to want to avoid us (but then, of course, they will brazenly cross a highway in the beam of headlights, go figure).

Have you seen this vid by ThinkerThunker? He analayzes bigfoot howls and find that they have little variation in pitch, as compared to the other common, howling animals like wolves and coyotes.

    Cheers,
    Seamus

Sisters are the best people to have around you and be all together like you four. You sound so down to earth and have alot of fun! Just like my 3 sisters, 2 brothers, mom and dad. I have camped all of my life up at the Koliwash River out of Estacada, deer hunting in Hell’s Canyon (now there’s a name!) all of my life, now at age 65, and have camped up at Mt. Adam’s forever, even by myself one time and have never heard ANYTHING! I had my own encounter when I was 11 years old, Episode 1024 right across from our driveway one evening and the another at the back if our property. Scared me half to death! I have never heard a howl or a growl, not sure I’d like to hear a growl though. Anyway, glad you got to hear it from around a campfire with your sisters and not in a secluded area out camping in the woods! Thank for sharing! 🦍
