A listener writes ” I had some encounters as a child and in my teenage years. My earliest memories are of being watched while going to bed a number of times. I never knew what it was but my parents would tell me there was nothing to worry about. Then when I was 10 or 11 I was bored and decided I was going to grab my gun and go to the back of the lake and practice.
I got in my row boat and headed to the back of the lake. I grabbed the gun and started to the sand pit thru the woods following the stream feeding the lake. About a 150 feet in I heard something just ahead of me. I started stalking itEven. I was unable to see it but it was just in front of me so I started following it. I don’t remember seeing it but I thought it was brown and about the size of a beaver. It was always just ahead of me within 10 feet to about 25 feet all ways in thick brush.
I followed it for a few hundred feet and then somebody hit a switch and everything went quiet no bugs and I would swear the wind stopped. I always thought of this as if I was stalking a neighbor kid and his mother saw me. I froze and then started backing out, while being paced out. Even rowing out I felt being watched. This was in north jersey in the 1960s, recently I found out that they named it big red eyes. In the years after that experience I was picked on every now and then until I moved out west. Some were play and some were terrifying . I have been following your podcast for years and everything I delt with points to your subject. I don’t remember seeing balls of light but I do remember my mother saying it must be ball lightning.”

I have not yet to experience everything going silent, but I did have an experience of hiking to an area I’d been before and suddenly I felt the imminent threat of something watching us, and felt like we’d be killed if we didn’t leave. Which we did, abruptly. I imagine your experience as a child was terrifying!
