Witness Observation
I was squirrel hunting on my grandmothers property, that is around 2 1/2 miles east of Dayton. I had just walked in a clearing, about 14 x 30 ft, surrounded by dense foliage. I had a New England single shot 12 gauge with me. I was looking up into the trees for any sign of squirrels when I caught a movement out of the corner of my right eye. I looked down and to the front of me and saw standing about 15 ft away a very large creature. It was about 6 ft 7 in to 7 ft tall, very broad shouldered, very hairy except the face. The face was devoid of hair. Coal black eyes, wide nose, very long arms and big hands. It was like I had surprised it. We stared at each other for about 10 seconds, when I cocked my 12 gauge. At that time it turned to its right and disappeared. VERY quickly. It was getting to be dusk but I did look for tracks and found none.
There was no smell. I hunted at that location quite often and know the surroundings. That day there were no birds, squirrels or any signs of wildlife whatsoever. It started to get darker so I started home.
Time and Conditions
5:00 pm – cold winter day, cloudy and breezy. Wooded, across the road from the property there are the Trinity River bottom land.

I’m no hunter, but isn’t a 12-gauge a little overkill for a squirrel? Kinda like hunting ducks with a cannon.

Depends, 12 guages have lots of different size loads you can use in them. That’s why you can hunt everything from dove to bears with them. That’s why hunters like them so much. It’s all my grandfather would use to hunt squirrel. BTW, squirrels are tough little suckers to kill.

It appears that the “Dayton” is Dayton, Texas which is 38 miles northeast of Houston, Texas which is very close to the northern portion of Trinity Bay (east of Houston, TX.).

and a 12 gauge is not over kill while hunting squirrels. They are high up in the trees. You sometimes need to extra power to reach them

Dayton is 6 mi. from Liberty in Liberty Co. Gobs of sigtings around there. Just about 45 min from the Big Thicket and the Bragg Rd.

12 Gauge with #7 1/2 shot and modified choke makes an excellent load for squirrels going through trees tops up to about 30 yards high.

First gun was a 12 GA. Hunted rabbits, deer, pheasants, ducks and squirrel. Fried squirrel, baked squirrel, bbq squirrel, squirrel soup……………………………………………………………….. just hafta pick the bbs out & bite down careful.
