SC EP:368 Boy Scouts Encounter Sasquatch

I will return on Sunday for the Members.

A listener writes “Hi Wes! Been listening to the show for a few years now. I had an encounter in northern MN back in 2012 while guiding canoe expeditions on the boundary waters.

Myself and my crew of 8 other boy scouts/scout masters had several consecutive days worth of encounters and we weren’t the only crew that did.”

I spoke to Chuck and he and his crew of boy scouts endured several nights of encounters with a creature. He said “I heard what sounded like crying coming from the bush. I kept hearing what sounded like someone walking through our camp. I sleep under a tarp to keep dry. I could tell this thing was standing over me. I thought maybe it was a bear so I swiped my hand out and hit this thing in the chest. It felt like a hairy bodybuilders chest and this thing ran off. I think it is important to note that I am 6’2 and I tie my hammock up at eye level so when I hit this thing in the chest it had to be at least 8 feet tall. I didn’t really know what to think until later when one of the scout masters told me he got up to use the bathroom and while he was taking a squat this 9 foot tall gorilla ran past him.”

Chuck talked about how they encountered this thing several nights in a row and it seemed to get more and more aggressive.

Yes indeed! I lived in Minnesota for about 12 years. I had a buddy of mine come up from Ohio and we went into the boundary waters. We stayed in Ely the night before at an outfitters and headed put early in the morning. We did the Shell Lake chain which had us put in on The little indian souix river. Are you familar with that trip Chuck? We didn’t have any strange experiences but wow is it true wilderness!! Thank you Wes and Chuck for another great episode.

I can’t express how much your show means to me. So happy I became a member, worth every penny. I know how hard you work or probably really don’t but it’s much appreciated. Thank you so much.

I agree with you Janet. I look forward to every interview. Chuck thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I’ve been wondering if any scout leaders ever saw a Sasquatch. I figured they had to have. Thanks Wes!

I love the access to the older player so I can turn my iPad off and the audio continues to play. Saves a huge amount of battery life. Also love the song you play. Very cool song. Never gets old. ?

Yeah old player is best and my first choice on the iPhone as it plays while the phone is on different apps and on standby screen mode. Plus it stops after end of show ! If I fall asleep unlike YouTube (that keeps playing) .. great show as always.

Had 2 of my sightings at the same general area, love any Minnesota encounter stories! Great show, Wes! “Hardtack” is the old style bread you were probably trying to remember at the end, similar to a “Trencher” from the middle ages….

Love this encounter! With Chucks training did he by chance get that at NOLS (Wilderness guide training) ? Look it up if you get a chance. Based here out of Lander WY. People come from all over the world to train. These are the hardcore people that are into hiking, rock and mountain climbing, survivalist type not necessarily hunters. Kinda open minded ‘Healthy Hippies’ in training, if you will, To use as a term of endearment of course. ? The course has people coming and going all the time. Curious if they have a ‘folk lore’ from off the mountains, that passes down from the generations?

So i thought it was appropriate that i mention this to other members b/c my story ties in to a few recent episodes… back in 2005-2012 I was heading up to Northern Minnesota on my annual summer fishing trips in late July/early August, usually with my dad to fish Lake Vermilion for muskie/smallmouth bass/pike, etc… and while i’ve always been somewhat interested in the whole crypto phenomenon, i can assure you back then that bigfoot was the last thing on my mind.

We were in awe of the stunning scenery and beauty of the Northwoods and the lake, and so one beautiful, still evening we were on the East end of the lake roughly 50-75 yards off this sheer rock wall that dropped into the lake from the forest above, paralleling the bank and casting our lures towards the vertical rock wall (which went up and plateaued about 75-100 feet above the lake and was all forested above) with big, broken chunk rock at the base of the wall that dropped off into the lake. Again, this was on the east end of the lake in a good sized cove/bay which i believe backs up to property owned by US Steel (or it used to be owned by them).

There was no one around… no boat traffic, completely still, no wind, no sound, sun beginning to set but still plenty of light out….beautiful night… so my dad and I are casting towards the bank for smallmouth bass, enjoying the evening together just relaxing… I am at the bow of a multi-species 18 foot fishing boat with a foot pedal, bow-mounted trolling motor that i am controlling from the front of the boat and out of nowhere a huge rock goes KERPLUNK! about 10-20 feet to the starboard side of the bow! Just a huge rock that disturbs the water in a very big way… it broke the calm surface water in a violent way.

This startled me a bit and i was immediately concerned as this rock had to be at least the size of a softball/grapefruit minimum as the water exploded as it hit. It would have sunk the boat and/or seriously hurt if not killed either one of us if it hit us. So I’m standing there with the fishing rod in my hand and am kind of dumbfounded and i scan the plateaued forest area above the rock cliff as i am 99% certain that’s where the rock was launched from and yell “Real Cool A-hole!!!”….. totally expecting it to be some goofy kids/adults trying to play games with us…. but I see NOTHING…. and hear NOTHING…. no kids laughing… or running away… or footsteps… or any giggling… it’s totally STILL and totally SILENT….

So within 20-30 seconds of that 1st rock hitting then BOOM/KERPLUNK! another one – this time behind the boat about 10-20 feet…. I immediately look at my dad, tell him to “hold on” and kick the trolling motor on HIGH and literally move across the other side of the bay as fast as possible…. luckily for us – there were no more rocks thrown when we moved 300 yards to the other side of the bay, but i had a very strange/odd feeling about the whole thing b/c i heard nothing and couldn’t detect any movement/sound from the perpetrator(s) while this was happening.

That was such a strange event to me back then and so out of the ordinary (we never, ever experienced anything like that on that lake ever again!) and my dad and i would discuss it on occasion and we just assumed that it was some jerky kids/adults…. but the more i think about it – those were 2 BIG rocks and i don’t know any kids/adults that can toss a softball sized rock 50-75 yards in the air. (?) I certainly can’t and I grew up playing baseball and football etc and have a pretty good arm on me.

Over the past 5 years i’ve stumbled upon Wes’ site here and have listened to every episode and find the whole sasquatch phenomenon completely fascinating. It was when i heard a few of the fishing/fisherman’s encounters like the Alabama/Georgia bass fisherman’s episode, etc. that i started to put 2 + 2 together…. and now with this Minnesota BWCA episode, and also the brand new Ohio coverup of the 2 gentleman fishing this past week who were fishing and experienced rock throwing at their boat prior to being attacked – the light comes back on for me about that day we were fishing in Northern Minnesota… and while i still think that it must have been kids/adults – i am left to wonder – what if?
