Possible Sasquatch Sighting

00bigfoot_sasquatch

The tipster, Jeremy—who asked us not to publish his last name—tells City Desk that yesterday morning, as he was driving on Brock Bridge Road near Suburban Airport, he spotted what he thinks is a sasquatch.

“I saw what I thought was a bear and so I pulled over to take some pictures,” he says. But when Jeremy got a closer look, he noticed the animal, which he estimates was about six or seven feet tall, was walking on two legs. “Bears usually walk on all four feet. I know they can walk on two, but he was wading through water in two feet, which I thought was strange,” he says. For nearly ten minutes Jeremy watched and snapped pictures of the beast. At no point did it walk on four legs, which he thought was strange and led him to believe he was witnessing the mythical beast.

Though it has never been proven that a sasquatch—sometimes known as “Bigfoot” or “Yeti”—does or ever has existed, sightings of the majestic hairy creature date back to the mid-1800s, and there’s been more than 3,000 total alleged sightings. According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, there have been a total of 35 alleged sightings in Maryland since 1970. Two of them have been—get this—in the Patuxent Research Refuge.

The refuge, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates, was established in 1936 by President Franklin Roosevelt and is “the nation’s only national wildlife refuge established to support wildlife research.” Which means the easy explanation for all of this is that it’s simply a big bear that likes walking on two legs instead of four. In fact, Jeremy’s girlfriend, who was with him during the sighting, suggested as much.

“I’ve driven by there hundreds of times and have never seen anything like it,” Jeremy says. “I doubt I’ll ever see something like this again.”

We’ve reached out to both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization for comment and we’ll update when we hear back.

I don’t doubt the sighting only that it’s unfortunate the pic isn’t very clear. It’s good to know people are keeping an eye out for this creature and someday I hope to see a clear pic of Sasquatch.

My husband and I lived not too far from there before moving to Germany.
The Patuxent Research Refuge is all around Brock Bridge Road the Laurel, and Jessup areas of Maryland.
There are patches of forest that run between built up areas, but it also connects to Patapsco Park area and beyond to Sykesville I-70 corridor.
Back in the 70’s there were reports of the Sykesville Monster ( described like a Sasquatch) and even a report of a hairy man near western Baltimore city area ( which is the I-70 area)
The forest may be narrow in some areas, but typically surround the waterways. This area of Maryland is full of tributaries that run into the Patapsco River. There are plenty of fish, deer and other animals out there to eat.
There are also stories of ‘Goatman’ in the areas not far from Brock Bridge Rd area.

Interesting comments, June. I heard a really good account of a sighting in this refuge, but I think it might have been a dogmen.

Doug W, sounds like you’ve heard of other strange occurrences in this area. Were you stationed there, by chance? Would love to hear other stories from this area, as it sounds like it might be a hotbed of activity.

In Nov. of 2015, Wes posted an interesting series of accounts from a biologist who worked at this WMA . At the time, Elise added a good link to a history of the place:

    http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/history/cronhist/patuxenthistory_perry.pdf

I just read through it and found the refuge was dedicated by Henry Wallace, which is a name i am familiar with and is synonymous with royalty in the state of Iowa (if there is such a thing!). Many other illustrious names are referenced throughout the history of this WMA, as well.

Anyway, the history is interesting and it’s inception began the “environmental movement”. When I look at the large, austere buildings used for “research”, I shudder to think what might go on inside. When one hears the words “secretive”, “government”, and “research” used to describe an area, you have to wonder what really goes on within.

Jan I was not stationed there but others in md. I know of a contractor and a story but it would be second hand. I lived in md and now live in an area where there is 10k acres of marsh swamp and timber bug infested. My wife saw something at 1am coming home one night that really spooked her. My sister in law,and niece saw, something in broad daylight 2 years ago 1000 yards from my wifes sighting. They saw, what looked like a man in a guillie suit standing 20 yards from their truck. It,just stood and looked while they drove by. It was, either a sq or a hunter but I cant track down anyone of my hunters that has,a guillie suit…still strange

Thanks, Doug. Interesting that your wife, sister in law, and niece all saw something strange in the same area, on different dates and times. I am totally convinced there are unknown, large animals running around in our wilderness areas.

Jan here is just a little food for thought. Same place my wife saw the thing/eyes I hunt.
I have like 3 cameras in there and so do my friends. I have a little 4 point buck on camera there and it has a radio collar on its neck with a rubber whip antenna. All kinds of pics and video of it but not one of us has ever seen it on its feet where we could shoot it.
The area is very remote and not many people venture in there at all. So if there was a sq in an area your chances of seeing it would almost be slime to none.
