Out stepped this giant man-ape looking thing

A listener writes “Hi Wes, I’ve just recently come across the podcast (super late, I know) and I came across one of the episodes where an older gentleman was speaking about his experiences in the woods.

It reminded me of a sighting I had almost 8 years ago. It was the weekend after Thanksgiving in 2010. My dad and I would always go hunting the weekend after Thanksgiving ever since I was a little kid. I’ve been around guns since I was a baby and have been shooting guns since my earliest memories of my childhood. My dad has always been an avid hunter and outdoorsman since he was a child, so naturally I was raised the same way. Fast forward to 2010, my dad, one of his friends, and one of my friends and I go to the deer lease we had in east texas. The area we hunted was north of Geneva off of FM 330. We camped in the yard of this abandoned house across the street from the entrance to the property (with permission), and would use ATV’s to get to our stands. The property itself ends right at the edge of the Sabine National Forest about a mile, maybe a mile and a half in. We would park our ATV’s at the “parking lot” about 200 or so yards in and then walk to our stands. But, we also had a tree climber that I would use. Now, the USDA Forest Service let’s you hunt in the Sabine, but you can’t have a stand up for more than 72 hours.

So, I would take the climber a couple hundred yards into the forest and climb a tree every morning in the dark. Well, on the second day during the afternoon hunt, I’m in the tree, about 35-40 feet in the air, it’s getting dark, and I start getting that weird anxiety type feeling that I heard others talk about, and then a few minutes later I hear something hit a tree so hard that it echoed throughout the woods. I’ve heard things falling out of trees in the Sabine before, and this was nothing like I’ve ever heard. It scared the shit out of me it was so loud. I couldn’t tell where it came from or what tree it exactly hit, but I could tell it was probably about 50 or 60 feet to the left of me at like a 45 degree angle, give or take. I’m not sure if it knew I was there, and it was letting me know it knew I was there or not. I’ve had deer walk right under me and not know I was there. I mean I could’ve spit a loogie on one before it even knew I was there. Anyways, I started looking around in the area where I heard the tree noise, and I saw some of the thicket moving in the distance. While there are what they call “forest roads” that spread throughout the area, I would say at least 90% of that area is completely untouched. Any normal person would need a machete or chainsaw to get through some areas.

So the fact that this thicket was moving the way it was confused the hell out of me. I mentioned those forest roads, well I hunted about 15 or 20 yards off that road, but I could still see the road and where it led to. Whatever this thing was, it followed the side of the road for a bit, still in the thicket, and then cut a little harder to the right across the road. Out stepped this giant man-ape looking thing that took one stride across the road and disappeared into the thicket on the other side. I thought about pulling up my gun to put a scope on it and maybe get a better look, but I was completely paralyzed with fear and anxiety. Ever since I was terrorized by my dad plying pranks on me while watching Boggy Creek when I was a kid, I knew I never wanted to come across one of those things.

So seeing that thing was like my worst nightmare unfolding right in front of me. Even though I now know I wasn’t really in any danger, it still scared me and I still get a little uneasy when I hear some of the testimonies of others on the show, just because of how surreal the whole thing was. I sat in that climber for a solid hour before finally climbing down. I had been in there so long that my dad actually drove the ATV down there in the pitch black darkness to look for me. When we got back to the camp, I told my friend what I saw and of course he just kind of scoffed and blew me off. I haven’t told anyone since i told him because of how he reacted and didn’t want anyone else to think I was crazy or anything. I can of course go into more detail but as this wall of text is already massive, I’ll save those for another email if you’re interested.”

I would love to have a more detailed description of your encounter!! That was so interesting. Didn’t like the way the dad played pranks like that. I was the youngest in my family and got that from older siblings. Sometimes it went over board. I hope Wes will be able to have you on the show if you’re up for it.
