Odd experiences on the farm

A listener writes “My family owned about 400 acres (Location removed), TN.

The farm itself was settled sometime in the 1800’s. To date the farm it had massive rock mounds on top of the hills as bunkers to defend against Indian raids. Also, there are long rock fences built by slaves and their cabin built away from the main house. My great grandmothers house was next to the creek and our garden. My family counted her as crazy when she made known that someone would come onto her porch late at night and ring the doorbell or mess with the door handle and she knew it was someone because she would hear deep mumbling voices talking to each other. This all happened when our garden was max production.

We counted off the damaged produce to deer but the way the cornstalks broke just wasn’t how a deer would do. At about 12 my father and I camped on top of the Mtn to get up and turkey hunt the next morning. We had a nice ATV trail that I rode all the time day or night and most of the time dad would have to force me to stop. I’m coming back towards our camp site about 930 and just got a deep mixture of fear and being watched. I got hit with a smell that was unlike anything I had smelled before dead rotten wet dog may come close. I have been watched by animals before and not get that feeling and have logged countless hours in wilderness  and not smelled or felt what I did that night.

Also, we would hear these screams and deep roars and everyone would always tell me that there was a big cat zoo on the other side of the Mtn and that’s what it was but I can’t find any record of anything like that ever being in the area.

Being a naive kid I believed them. One morning I guess I was about 15 and had just started hunting by myself. Right after daylight I heard something walking just below the ridge line out of my sight. I’m getting ready for a deer to pop up but it didn’t sound quite right. It sounded more bipedal. We had problems with poachers so I called out and in return I got a deep growl grunt that couldn’t have been a deer or human. About 5-10 minutes went by before I heard it walked quickly down the Mtn.

I was shaking like a leaf and was terrified. Dad was on the next ridge over but cellphone service was nothing so the only thing I could do was shoot my rifle. I know that 3 shots was a distress signal but I could only fire one out of fear. There are some more details with all of this and some more pretty interesting things happened on the farm. Look forward to speaking with you. “
